I'm attempting to build a Mob Tower in 1.9.5 to harvest EXP. I am fully aware that the traditional methods will not work, and no EXP will be given from mobs that are not killed through the hands of the player.
I'm trying to find out a way to build a tower that gathers weakened mobs in a small, enclosed space where I can easily slay them. How should I go by doing this? I'm currently just digging out a 16x16 hole to Bedrock, but it can be easily widened. I was thinking of just using a classic Mob Tower, like the one seen in this video (skip to 7:00)
The mobs would be carried down to a lower floor, and perhaps set through a series of cacti or something to lower their health, and then they would be placed into a bin where they are easily killed, and their movement is restricted. Maybe a piston door to halt the flow of mobs when slaying time comes.
My most important question is, would this be more efficient then simply going out at night to kill mobs by hand (and by that I mean Sword)? I have a large desert near my home, a long with a Zombie Spawner, and I simply travel out there at night to kill mobs. On the average night I'd get 8x string, 16x bones, 64x rotten meat, and 8x gunpowder, so that's plenty of mobs.
I've done what the video says and it works fine for me.
I checked the video comments and saw a really good idea. Just sit in the spot to get them to spawn, leave computer running for a while and when you come back, throw a healing potion for one quick destruction.
I made a few modifications as I saw fit.
-at the top where he left one block clear of water, I had water flowing to the end to ensure skeletons were pushed off
-I think the distance from my spawner to the "up" column is a little further
-I made the falling column one block wide so I couldn't get shot while collecting exp
I've built something akin to this for skeletons, but I'm having a really tough time trying to find a suitable angle at which to strike that they can't hit back (I know - cheesy). The hit box for melee weapons is all screwed up: I can't swipe at their legs without being a couple blocks beneath them - at which point the angle is enough to allow for return shots.

Oh! I'm sorry to say, but mob's hitboxes on SMP aren't aligned with the mobs. You heed to hit the upper half to deal damage. A little bug of SMP. But it'll work on SSP.

I was kind of afraid of that :wink.gif: So no work around?
Funny one, I just came on here to look for a mobgrinder design for exp and I saw your thread in the 1.9. Neway I watched your first video and stopped right here
I was thinking on digging out the center area behind where those meet, have it meet at the center and dig out a window and strike enemies that fall through through the holes. Safe and simple imo, since you gotta hit em to get exp might as well lol. Easier than going to hunt them in the wild.

I actually tried clicking the X on the 'ads by google' section of your screenshot.... out of habbit

Any advice?
use an instant health splash potion. One throw and they will all go down.

Check out 'Compost Bins', a suggestion thread.
with this I won't have to go through tons of stone swords

How precisely did you position them/yourself? I've tried fences, metal grates, & glass panes to no avail. I am on SMP - are you?

No. Or until the hitboxes get fixed in SMP.

Tested and works well :smile.gif:
I might make some improvements on it.
Wait wut? What's up with all those zombies out of the trap?
Also, I think it's better to do it with a skeleton spawner. Bones and arrows are more useful than rotten flesh.

SMP is glitchy. That was about 70 zombies. I'm only testing trap design at the moment. :smile.gif:
I think zombies are best for exp, and skellies are best to just kill with a lava drop trap.
Here's my improvements to the trap:
More compact design. Kinda looks like part of a ship. Anyone want to complete it?
Added a water source in the wall to push zombies better.
Beginning of the water lift.
This is how you attack zombies in SMP (Top down: iron bars or glass panes, block of space, half block).
*I don't know if anyone's made better, I didn't check, this is just what I changed.
