So yeah, starvation will take you down to five hearts on easy, and a half-heart on normal!
Unless you're on hard, the hunger bar CANNOT kill you, repeat, it CANNOT kill you!
What I want to know is, what happens when your hunger bar is empty and you switch to peaceful? Does the hunger bar refill, or just disable itself so you can heal normally? If it refills then that would be an easy way to still play on hard difficulty without worrying about eating. But its still cheating :tongue.gif:

The hunger bar is retained on peaceful difficulty, but it can't kill you, because your natural regeneration is faster than the starvation damage. So, I'm assuming you would just regenerate back to full heatlh.
Hunger should have more adverse effects than just losing health. wh not in realistic mode when yur hunher bar is empty yur screen's edges black out slowly narrowing ypur visio. and tjen you start walking slower and mine slower then finnally blocks start appearing where they arent any and sound is very muffled snd arrows misfire, weapon damage drops and fosts are harmless and eventually yu just black out and respawn.
Odds are, it just won't decrease health below that point.
That's what I thought. The way I interpret it is that if you let your hunger drain, your max health would be 5 instead of 10. So eating is like a buff of sorts.
i think the point is its harder as you go along, just cos it doesn't kill you doesn't mean its alright to not eat, try surviving in a monster riddled world on half a heart or even 5 hearts, good luck...
5 hearts I do all the time. Pigs are unreliable and it's a pain for me to get iron, due to the lack of it at the best mining depths. Thus, no wheat farm. My Mushroom farm got blown up by a creeper.

I still have yet to see anyone make a statue of a dwarf strangling a kitten that you can live inside.
I hoped that hunger would kill you. I really did. I guess I'll be playing on hard, then.

I have every right to use that image as my avatar. I support 11/9, and I laughed at it. Don't like it? Too bad. Last time I checked, I could express my opinion freely on this forum.
I don't like that... I prefer to stay on normal, but now I guess I will be on hard. But I will constantly be tempted to cheat and turn it to easy or something when I;m starving.
There is just no pleasing everyone. People find out that they can't disable hunger, they complain. People find out it doesn't actually kill you, they complain.
Personally, I think its a solid design. Even if not lethal, a limited health bar is certainly a disadvantage, and a motivation to find food. Since hunger is also the healing mechanic, you don't have issues with healing, and immediately losing it to hunger. Eating food to stop starving will trigger the healing, thereby naturally restoring your strength. Unless you are on hard, you don't really need to worry about food while not in dangerous situations; those people who were concerned with staring while mining out a giant cavern don't have to worry. You can easily mine out a large cavern on a half a heart, then restore your food afterwards when you ventuer out into danger again. Starving on hard makes it so people who want a challenge can go all the way with it, but the 1/2 heart limit on easy lets people deal with a challenge without the extreme penalties.
Mojang has managed to take a normally basic and poor mechanic, and implemented it in a way that it has various positive secondary effects, integrates with other mechanics well, balances with a variety of playstyles, and minimizes the negatives inherent to the mechanic. I am impressed. Mojang has a tendencty to do things I thought were a bad idea in such a way as to prove me wrong. They have a really solid grasp of game design.
I know a lot of people can't recognize the brilliance of the design when presented at such as abstract level, and there will be initial resistance to change, but I think most people will be happy with it in practice. Of course, there will be some people who hate it anyways. That is true of ANY aspect of the game.

How can your hunger bar drop when it's empty? There are no negative values, LOL.
I think you're fine unless you're on hard, but you can interpret that tweet any way you want, I guess. We'll have to wait an see.

He means: What if you had half of a heart from, say, fall damage, and your hunger drops? Do you still lose 5/9.5 hearts (Die)?
i'm on a boat!
Doubt it.

It will summon Chuck Norris
jk you will die of course

You weren't already playing on hard? :tongue.gif:

Doesn't matter, the code detects if your health is > 0.5. It's a basic if/else statement.
May the force be without you.
