I agree with your points OP. I don't mind the waiting at all(don't mind if 1.8 comes in a month from now) but during such an anticipated update Notch shouldn't be all relaxed and working on something else since "he gets bored of coding minecraft" as others have mentioned.
Yes enjoying your job is important but if Notch can't deliver after so many millions have purchased his games ,then he should use that money to hire employees who will work hard and deliver much more.
In the last year updates have been trickling at an extremely slow rate and when a huge update is finally near.. Notch is again not working hard on it. It's just frustrating when the community(modding community especially) offer so many ideas and so little is ever implemented. Also new games are usually done for financial reasons. At the moment Notch should have more of a customer obligation to focus on minecraft after so many good faith purchases. Jobs shouldn't be fun 100% of the time, sometimes you actually have to work hard.
@all responses saying coding is really hard...etc... Yes it's hard, but it's also his job. He has made huge profits and can afford more employees if the pace of his coding is so slow. Of course he has no obligation to do so, but it just gets more frustrating when he wants to work on other things or take breaks till he feels like working on minecraft more.
Please point out when I said I wasn't trying to insult you. I would love to know.
Oh I'm sorry, I just assumed that since insulting people isn't really considered appropriate for the forums, and because I specifically asked in the OP to keep insults to a minimum, that you were trying to behave in a reasonable and forum-appropriate manner.

So wait.. you *were* trying to insult me?
I wasn't trying to insult you, but neither was I trying to avoid it really. I never once said I wasn't trying to insult you. I also never said I wanted to insult. I kept insults at a minimum. 1 insult was all I made. Then you come back with several. You have no room to talk saying that insults are inappropriate when you came back at me with much more than one. So considering that, you can't honestly expect me or anyone else to take your comments with seriousness or to make an actual response that involves no raging. All I did from the start was point out my opinion of your OP and get my point across. I'm perfectly fine with criticism. Its when people rage, just like you're doing, that it gets annoying. I think anyone who doesn't have the patience to deal with 1 or 2 negative comments without raging has no reason to be posting expecting everyone to be nice.
The only thing I have left to say is stop raging and stop commenting back unless you can come up with an intellegent response yourself.
Well, i think EVERYONE can tell that Notch is a little lazy, fortunately Jens is now the lead dev for minecraft until release and he codes faster than notch.
there are only 2 problems with this release that i see:
1) this update was hyped too early, that's why you've got people who are not so satisfied with the release date.
2) some people are actually right, if they had released this before september, there wouldnt be so much whining. You ask why? well because school starts in september and most people were actually hoping to play the update before school started (or in my case, college exams).
I agree. Unfortunately, the younger audience (Which is most likely the bulk of the players) will still worship Notch. The only ones that will truly understand what's going on are those who actually think instead of pressing the "Worship notch" button.
I am disappointed in the fact that we won't be getting a full 1.8. 1.7 was a disappointment too. Upping the second digit by 1 just to release...pistons? Now, some think it's fun, but that's nowhere near worthy of a full update. Notch wanted to add a bunch of stuff during the H-Ween update last year. Guess what? 30% of it never made it to the game.
Notch is slacking, and he really needs to step his work up.

This dude gets it.
This whole thread is about principals and good business practices. Not about some misplaced sense of importance or impatience that 1.8 isn't coming out fast enough.
Too bad most all of the naysayers either think they know my thoughts better than me or can't be bothered to consider that not *everyone* in the world is self-centered and only thinks about how things impact them.
[wax on]
On the subject of the "world rotates around me" mentality.
I'm no psychologist, but wouldn't you say that in most cases, humans tend to assume that others will consider the same or similar thoughts when confronted with a similar situation?
Examples (obviously nothing about personalities is true all of the time, but for the discussion):
The guy who constantly rips people off is constantly, himself, concerned with getting ripped off.
The nice guy who goes out of his way to help others is overly trusting because he thinks others are like him.
The girl who is convinced she's hottest thing on the block assumes that everyone else would agree.
And
The individual who is selfish and regularly thinks only about how a situation impacts himself, assumes that other people do the same.
I bring this up for the following reason.
An extremely large portion of the negative replies I've received have been nothing more than calling me a selfish jerk, when in fact, quite the opposite is true. My thread is intended to be a letter to Mojang, I even implied that in the OP. It is a list of issues that I feel they, as a business, could benefit from improving.
Yes, the issues at hands have impacted me in a negative way.
No, nowhere in this thread am I demanding any sort of compensation or "answers" for the issues at hand.
So... why are people jumping to the conclusion that I'm just a selfish idiot?
Could it be that they, themselves, usually approach a situation only thinking about themselves, and because of that they assume I do the same?
[wax off]
I was referring to (and rereading it, it was stated poorly =P) the way that sticky pistons work (or rather, don't) concerning pushing/pulling another piston.
DanAllen117: I'm going to say this as nicely and simply as I possibly can.
Shut up.
You need to stop posting in this thread and start thinking. No, you never once said "not trying to insult you". Nor did Smashingzwan say that you did. He said, and I ****ing quote...
"Your post wasn't anywhere near the 'it's just my opinion, not trying to insult' level you're trying to claim it was."
And that statement is completely correct.
Here, I'll quote you, now. After your incredibly rude first post in this topic and Smashingzwan confronting you about it, you said:
"The only thing I said that could be considered me acting like a child was saying your post is ignorant. Which isn't childish conduct, I'm saying how I honestly feel about your post. Honestly I really didn't feel like reading the entire thread, I don't know too many people that wanna read 12 pages of posting, and you probably wouldn't either. I gave my opinion. You shouldn't make a thread if you don't want to hear several of the same post anyway. My opinion of your post was honest. The only thing you've done with your posts towards me is rage."
Please take note of the parts in bold. Now, let's take a look at the post in question...
"The only thing I can think of to sum this up in one sentence is, ignorant retard is ignorant. Give notch a break, he's been working hard for months to make us happy with the most recent update. There was never a release date that he set. There is no reason to complain about the time he is taking off. All you're doing in that ENTIRE ranting/raging post is complaining about the fact that you can't have it when you want it. Get over it.
BTW: this is toward the OP"
Nowhere in that post did you say that his thread was ignorant. In fact, you called him an ignorant retard (which is bannable, by the way). Your opinion was vastly overpowered by your intolerance and quickness to insult. You are wrong. Shut up. Get over it.
The least you could do is read the first and last two pages before you make a contribution to the thread. This will give you perspective both on the original topic, who was contributing to it, and why everyone thought what they did, as well as where the topic is now, who is contributing to it, and why everyone thinks what they do. Don't be a ****ing asshole. If you are, at least put some effort into it.
Now then, back on topic...
Notch has not conducted himself professionally or efficiently. His PR is incredibly poor. His business decisions, too, are incredibly poor. Mojang is a company that gives the impression of being a slack, friendly environment. While I would normally be an advocate of this, make sure you read nothing into that other than what is there. I did not say "a slack, friendly, work environment", I said "a slack, friendly environment". This is simply not acceptable, and if you, or I, or anyone in this thread or the videogame industry had Notch working under us, it would be an incredibly poor executive decision to not fire him. His work is bug ridden, slow to release, poorly planned, and horribly executed. He takes more vacations than necessary, and allots very little time to his actual job. Yes, I know he is his own boss. Yes, I know this post will not result in any change. Yes, I value discussion and the truth regardless of whether or not it brings about revolution. No, I don't give a **** about your opinion on whether or not Notch is a good businessman and game developer. He is not. Your fanboyism is not going to ****ing change that. I love Minecraft and the direction it's (slowly) going in. I do not love who is lazily taking it there.

They do work. The only time they don't is when either the other piston is extended or the piston is moving too fast.
@Korimito I agree with most of your post except one point. Notch's PR is quite fine. Notch and his team communicate daily with the community and listen to ideas.
1.8 has a lot mor too it than is readily apprant. This is a common phenomenon with coding; the change visible and the work that went into it can be very different things. Take the larger biomes and rivers. Doesn't sound like a big change, does it? But he has to compeltely redesign how the biome code worked, in such a way that he can smoothly change the high of the random terrain, determine macroscopic features from a purely local perspective, and make it all work quickly. A lot of coding work, but it doesn't look like it was that much work. I'm sure most people think making oceans that large would be simple. Same thing with the lighting engine. that was not a 15 minute change.
Then there are features that were coded but not demoed.anyone remeber the server list he tweeted? That was a part of the development, but has been largely ignored.
So, there has been a lot more work done than it a typical player will realize. They are not being nearly as lazy as pople think. Could they be faster? sure. No one is saying they are developing for speed. But comparisons to the early stages of minecraft are unfair. Coding a new game is very different from expanding an existing one. At first, progress seems very fast. Pretty much anything you do is radical and new, and tons of progress is apparant. Then as you get going into later phases, the apparant speed slows down. You have to fit new features into the framework, instead of building the framework to do them in the firt place. If you change something in the framework, it has far-reaching implications. Bugs become more complex, and there is more to test. A fairly radical change, like adding pistons, can seem like a minor addition. Esp. since you have the bulk of the existing game to compare each change to, so the percentage difference in updates is smaller. All of this makes the apparant development of more well-developed games seem a lot slower than new games.
Some slowdown is real. Attending cons due to high popularity does slow down development. Running a company does slow things down. Other slowdowns are people being unreasonable. You complain he worked on lunduum dare? That was the weekend. Weekends are typically people's time off. You are complaining that he made a game in his spare time. And he has made some sacrifices. Yes, he got married in the middle of the update. Its a months long update, do you really expect him to put his job above his bride? If anyone expects that, they are being completly unreasonable. Even then, he had a fairly short honeymoon, and was soon back to coding. On many of his other vacations, he worked during them. There are several tweets from when he is on vaction about him figuring out how to access the code remotely, or coding on the patio.
Overall, I think Notch is getting a unjustly poor rap for his speed. I'd like to see how well most people handle developing a game while building a company.
Additonally, regarding the steam thing. I think you are focusing on one phrase and missing the point he was making. Going on steam would limit what he game could do. Not nessecarily just selling things. Notch has (recently) said things like "If we go crazy and start selling capes", so I don't think that is really his concern. The map market, for instance. It doesn't nessecarily mean they will be selling maps. Look at the App market. Plenty of free apps, its just a unified means to distribute them, with the option for developers to charge. If we take it to mean that it is a way to distribute player-made maps, I only see one major use for that. Adventure mode. Adventure mode will likely be fueled primarily by player-made maps. For that to work as best it can, Mojang needs to facilitate the transfer of adventure maps. Hence, the map market. Also, the "how we're allowed to talk to our users" is a big point.
And as far as developing multiple games, you are being completly unreasonable if you expect notch to only work on minecraft and never touch another game again. Yes, minecraft is the game that was wildly successful and launched his company. No, that does not mean it should be the only game their company every works on. That would be like saying Blizzard should ONLY work on warcraft, since that was thier first big hit, or valve should ONLY work on half-life. Do they still work on these games and their sequels? Yes, they are very popular, and for a reason. Do they make other games? Yes, and many of them are also very popular. So saying that Mojang should not work on anything other than minecraft is a very selfish and shortsighted stance.
I took the part about me out because I really don't care. Wasn't talking to you anyway.
The game isn't even released yet in all technicality. So Notch is not bound by anything saying he has to be working all the time on this. He has other games. He has a wife. And to be even more convincing he has his own life. Its the same with modders. They have a life. Look at the aether mod. It has the highly anticipated 1.02 update that people waited on. but they have lives and can't just do everything to make everyone else happy. Notch has a life. He doesn't have to keep making this game. He doesn't have to continue giving us updates. but he does. Be happy we even have the game period.
@Mystify. I think the OP and others are quite aware of how much work has gone into 1.8 and yes he can work on other games. Just it's a bad business practice to work on an unknown new game at the time of one of the most anticipated updates. Also the general speed of updating this whole year has been extremely disappointing. Although tough, Notch has the resources to hire more, add more content, and polish more on minecraft.
@Dan Allen. You shouldn't compare minecraft to the aether mod. Minecraft has made millions of dollars while aether was made by players who care about the game and get a few donations.
This is Notch's job. He is extremely relaxed since he is an indie developer with no boss, obligations and is rich due to his successful game. Other developers have to work extremely hard and make little money. I'm disappointed Notch is taking advantage of being so successful that he takes many breaks, works on other things for fun till he feels like working on minecraft more(although exaggerating a bit)and can't release content at a quick pace. Try telling your employer you couldn't finish your work since "you have a life"

Yes, you are completely right! Notch has a wife and a life. So do modders. They have lives, girlfriends, wives, kids, jobs, etc. The difference between modders and Notch is that two modders will pump out much more content than Notch and Jeb. There are a lot of reasons for this, but the reasons aren't really important. What is important is that these modders are creating all of this content in their spare time. They are hobbyists. Stop acting like Notch is a hobbyist. Minecraft is, and has been for the past year, his job. Do you know what a job is? That's 8 hours of every day (barring weekends) that everyone spends doing work. I know plenty of people with jobs that do them well and reliably. They also have kids, friends, lives, wives, husbands, chores, hobbies, the like.
TL;DR: You're acting like Notch is developing Minecraft as a hobby. It's his job.
Also, lol "don't care about it" means "have no response".

Did I compare minecraft to the aether mod? no. I compared devs to other devs in the fact that they have their own life. Plus, Notch is kind of his own boss, idk if you realize that. Notch has no obligations to us. He doesn't have to listen to anything we have to say. But he does. You don't have much of an argument considering most of it is about what makes fans happy and not what makes him happy. He is still coding in the game, he is just letting Jeb be the leader for a couple weeks. Notch doesn't spend a whole lot of time just having fun at his own pace. He has cobalt and scrolls to work on. He's a person, not a machine. If he wants to do something else or wants to have his own free time, leave him be.

They aren't supposed to work with extended pistons. And there isnt much use for pushing pistons to their absolute limit speed-wise.
I also hold a lot of respect for Jens. He's a really talented guy and I know he can push Minecraft along just fine.
