Not sure how this will work with the 1.5 version and afterwards, it depends on the developers of ctm or optifine/mcpatcher probably. Stay tuned for updates.
This tutorial is based on random textures suggestion. Many people want this in vanilla, but I'll show you the way you can do this in your texture pack using mods. Go see the suggestion itself to see the effect this will produce.
Bonus tutorial for those who need a little more help
Some things you should know before commenting:
First of all, Huge thanks to . I took almost all of this information from his video tutorial with his permission.
I did not create this feature or develop it in any way, I am just bringing this to the daylight.
I did not make and I won't make this for default textures or any other texture packs. You'll have to find an artist capable of that.
Share this tutorial! Send this to your favorite texture pack author if you want it included there. Currently very few packs support this.
Please let me know about any mistakes you see here, some easier ways to accomplish the effect.
Known problem (at least for me): With Optifine, using random textures will work as usual, but connected textures on glass, book shelves won't work, even though connected textures are included in both MCPatcher and Optifine.
please learn to read. It is only supported by mods. Nothing with the vanilla minecraft yet.
Perhaps I have been too unclear? I was of course referring to random textures being added to anything at all. Since I am a texture pack drawer using optifine it means nothing whether it is a mod or a regular feature, as long as it has been added at all.
Really good work getting it added to optifine! I tried to suggest something of the sort to them a little while back, but it seems that your voice was heard? So what now? Will there be random textures for items too? Perhaps armor?

It was there before I even created that suggestion i think. Like a hidden feature or something.
oh, then maybe we should start a campaign for the long-awaited random items? Or is this an already existing feature just hidden away under a layer of super-secret code as well? XD
I'm writing a new ores mod at the moment, and I was wonder how you could go about making this work with modded textures? It'd be nice if my copper, quartz, and mythril could support multiple textures. Or do you just do it as described in the tutorial, and the game understands? Seems like it would, but I thought I'd ask.
Thanks!

Probably it would as long as the textures are in the same terrain.png. If not just try to experiment by writing different but correct texture paths and so on... I did not create this feature so I can't be sure. I just brought this thing into the daylight.
WOW! I saw your topic about suggesting this for vanilla minecraft, when you did not think it was in any mods. I hope this gets in to vanilla any way.
I will make one based on the default textures!

1. There's a mistake in your post. On the first screen you properly created "ctm" folder but on the 4th one there's "ctd".
2. Check this post too see how to make random textures work with connected textures in OptiFine: http://www.minecraft...0#entry18503207
Thanks for pointing that out. I fixed that right away. And also thanks for that link too, I think I'll add that to this tutorial as well if you don't mind. Have you tried that fix yet? Did it help?

Fixed this and finished the post. I won't stop editing it but this is how it should have been from the beginning.

"Rando-Vanilla". It puts a nice look on grass/
If anyone finishes it, let me know because many people asked me (whined to be exact) for this. I could publish the link to yours pack.
I really did my best to make it as simple as possible. Try watching this tutorial then. I was using it to create my own.
