I've heard that you can use Nether Portals to teleport from place to place. I've tried it myself but all I seem to have managed to do is to have a direct route back to my house form everywhere. I've tried puzzling out the wiki but I just understand what it means. Can anyone help me figure out how to get multiple, paired portals all straightened around?
Portals will send you to a Nether portal within a certain radius, and to the closest one.
BASICALLY:
Build your portals farther apart. A LOT farther apart. To make sure this is the issue, build a portal 128 blocks away from the others (within the Nether). You should end up pretty far from where you started in the Overworld.
If you want to understand it more, read about nether portals on the wiki, and the way they link up. There are some pretty good diagrams. I'll link to some if you'd like.
Feel free to PM me if you need more help.
I've actually had a glitch in 1.9pre4 where I have a portal at home and its corresponding nether portal. After adventuring quite some distance in the overworld I built a second nether portal. Rather than another portal being created in the nether, I ended up where the first nether portal was, so teleporting back to the overworld brought me home.
Edit:
This may not be a glitch? I seriously ran in the overworld for at least three or four minutes in a single direction. Seems that a distance like that would be outside that range.
Ok, so have you travelled to the location you want to go, or do you want to use the nether to make one trip there?
If its the former, you will have to do some math. In the overworld, walk to where you want to exit. Build a Portal there. Calculate how many blocks using F3 your second overworld portal is away from your first. if its, say 400 blocks, divide that by 8. You will get 50. So now, go into your first overworld portal, (so your in the nether) and then walk in a straight line. (remembering that when you go into a portal, the direction you are facing is saved) at the fiftieth block, build your second nether portal. The second nether portal should link to the second overworld portal you build.
If you have any other portals active other than your first overworld one and your first nether portal before you do this, deactivate them. They can intefere with how your portals connect sometimes.
Every five steps in the real world is 1 step in the Nether. To do this, you need a good amount of Obsidian. 10-20. So, if you go about the amount of steps it would take in the real world, while in the nether, divided by five, (That means that 500 steps would be 50 steps, Et cetera.) light it, then after you go into it, it SHOULD put you in a newly generated spawn. If this does not work, try from the place you are teleporting to, in fact, try to do this first., light it up, and it should make a new spawn in the Nether. I'm sorry if I didn't help.

The Overworld and Nether are different in terms of proportion. Traveling one block in the Nether is the equivalent of traveling 8 blocks in the Overworld. Meaning that however far you traveled, divide that by 8, that's how far you really got.
That's why all long-distance traveling should be done in the Nether.

The point wasn't to do travelling, it was simply a matter of convenience and I wanted to take a screenshot of the nether from where I was (adventuring to test my texture pack).

I understand, I was simply pointing out that it's more convenient to travel in the Nether - it's harder to end up right back where you started.

I've just never encountered a situation where a new portal took me back to a different portal. I didn't recall that being a rule for anything - I thought a new portal was created each time.

Ok. So, example time:
My home portal is at -661x 61z. I've been through it and have the corresponding portal. That one, I'm happy with.
I have another portal in the overworld near Ox 0z. Would I have to go to 0x 0z in the Nether to get a nether poratl synced to that one?
Travel in nether for a while.
Make Portal 2, then travel and make home 2.
In nether make a tunnel from Portal 1 to Portal 2

It's a server plugins.nvm... read above ^Edit:

(Sigh), it's 8:1.

I think that's correct, assuming that the home portal nether coordinates are about -83x 8z (1/8 of the overworld coordinates)

Yep! Cool! Thanks so much guys! Appreciate it!
