PLEASE READ THIS OP: TIP 1:
Make it more interesting. Set it up as a endless or unrealistically huge ocean with one, very big and very, very high island in the middle.
This way it will be even more interesting.
Will people destroy all land in the end drowning themselves?
Will they start setting up elaborate underground networks? (only make it hard to impossible to build under ocean. This can be done by having only a few blocks of dirt/rock over the bedrock. Like, 2-3 blocks. - and as soon someone floods it, everyone dies who was under the ocean, since it would take too long to swim up and survive.
TIP2:
Make instaban on death which will expire in 7 days. People will think of their actions much more.
Thanks for all the tips, but I've already went over instaban, and that seems utterly flawed for this gamemode. I'm staying with the original principles of the previous test, aswell as Death ban does nothing except remove a player from the game. Considering we only have one-two tests a week for five hours. Even if we were to do an hour long ban, the most likely thing to happen would they are set back, get supplies from their allies, and continue on their way. Without it, people still need to think about giving supplies to enemies if they die, leaving their base unprotected, there's more to that.
The map will be randomly generated, as stated this is a test, not for just shits and giggles. Most likely people will start up underground networks anyway, but it runs the risk of being discovered and leading back to your base.
Just skimming over the post, I'd like to make note that the OP should be (or should have) considered the applications more closely as opposed to approving them all in a linear fashion. If you were trying to go with a "first-come-first-serve" sort of thing, then forget I said anything. It just seemed to me that people who better qualify are left behind to those who might not be able to commit quite as seriously as you might have hoped.
Though I would have liked to participate in the project, I chose never to apply because I'm aware of the importance of various factors and mechanics ahead of time, and it might alter the results. Most people applying are likely doing the same. If you choose to do this experiment a 3rd time in the future, I recommend waiting until the other thread is buried and most people have forgotten about it. It's never a good idea to use test subjects who know the ins-and-outs of an experiment.
Good luck though!

I disagree with this tip, as it no longer restricts people to a certain distance. It's possible that, before survival instincts kick in and people become desperate, that people can farm up blocks solely for the purpose of expanding the playing field - giving them more room to work and, with enough ingenuity, more resources to gather. Minecraft water mechanics are horribly broken and absolutely unrealistic. There are so many ways to prevent drowning and none of them make any sense.
The only way I can agree with this tip is if the water extends all the way down to the Void, so that the resources beneath the ocean are not available and a few of the ways you can "cheat" water are harder to manage, and if the Bedrock Wall still existed ~50-100 blocks out in each direction. The walls need to exist to prevent the "unlimited world" effect. Having an ocean border around an island might be interesting, but it's a tricky idea that would have probably needed more time to analyze before starting the project.

The experiment is also meant to be fun, and instaban mechanics are only fun for the most hardcore of players. This sort of thing would only really be effective if there were a few hundred people participating, and only if the ban was permanent. That would be a better representation of the data. This only discourages people from coming back, and leaves them FAR behind when their ban expires. A temporary kick of 5-10 minutes would be more appropriate, at least that way it would be much more difficult to recover what was lost, but not delaying them to the point that they come back to a, potentially, entirely new landscape.

For the most part, that is what I did. Considering this is my first time doing the experiment, I wanted to simply get a test across and see how it goes with the first thirty people. I've talked to 90% of them over skype, and they all seem like decent people. If they do turn out to be underqualified, I have five people in reserve willing to join the project.
I only disagree with the temporary ban part, I refuse to do this because it has no effect.

My friend, we're all very well aware of the "various factors and mechanics" in the future, because if we didn't read the original experiment, we wouldn't be so interested in joining this one. Having completely unaware test subjects are difficult to come by, though a sure way to get such people is to recruit a bunch of your friends into playing Minecraft for the first time. But even then, they would already know each other, not shrouded by the anonymity of the internet.
Check out the Mindcrack server's Ultra Hardcore series. [snip] They record the whole thing, and cut it into 30 minutes long episodes.
Everyone uploads a new episode every other day. They must be very careful not to spoil any footage (this is only one of their series). If someone dies at for example 10 minutes in an episode, they even add some black screen, or some footage of 20 mins. to not to spoil with the length of the video.
Well, the thing about their series is that, as you said, the sessions are considerably shorter, compared to our 80 hour game time. And the manner of their game play is significantly more intense, compared to someone here who might just be mining stone for a good while. I guess I'm thinking more of a documentary style kind of collective LP. I don't know, the thought of the audience needing to watch so much footage just to see the progression of the experiment bothers me, especially since our audience don't really care about the personalities of us random Minecrafters, as opposed to the recognizable ones in Mindcrack that people wouldn't mind just listening to them screw around and stuff. There's also how I anticipate us having skype sessions and there will be voices everywhere, making for more messy LPs

I suppose I should have applied then, but it seems a bit late now to get a reliable spot. If I'm going to participate, I'd like to be in from the start or not at all.
Also... since when has being friends affected how you play the game?
I tend to be that "one asshole" that always ruins everything. Y'know, the one that gets the 1-shot-snipe and teabags you, the one that secretly hides a few TNT blocks beneath the redstone device, and of course the one that suddenly pulls the boss (and all the trash!) despite being the raid's healer (I'm the raid leader, I can get away with it).
I follow rules, but if no griefing isn't a rule, I have no mercy! Don't care who you are.

I would still recommend applying, as a few people have yet to accept contact details or inform me of any other way beyond the fact of their application.

I suppose I'll give it a go, though your post in the OP claims that Player slots are no longer available. Are they what you were referring to with the part I quoted here, or are you looking exclusively for the types listed in the OP?
EDIT: I'll put up an app if the slots are available, of course.

The problem is, we have thirty people who applied and were accepted. However, nine of those people have yet to contact me back or provide any additional information. If they do not do this by Saturday, they will be disqualified and you can join in. ^^

Are you able to dedicate ample time to the project when required?:
My schedule is pretty free at the moment. Save for things that might arise in-real-life or whatever the case may be, I see no reason why I wouldn't be able to play regularly, unless the schedule for the server up-time is at a rather odd time for me. That's something to discuss when the experiment gets to that level, but again I'm sure there will be no time conflict.
Are you able to work with well with the others on the project?
This question is rather vague. "Work well with others" can be defined in many different ways, especially for an experiment that can go in just about any direction. Am I capable of keeping unneeded insults and drama out of the game? Sure. Am I capable of forming alliances and working together to survive? Definitely. That doesn't necessarily mean I'm going to do that, however. I might find that I work much more efficiently alone and can thrive independently more than if I were working with teams. It's completely possible to find me as a "lone wolf" doing what I can to sabotage the enemy and hoard their resources for myself.
Beyond the game and aside from a bit of hostility that naturally comes from competitive survival gameplay, I won't take any of it personally and I hope those I would work with (or against) feel the same way. In-game? OH IT'S ON, BABY!
If you're expecting someone who is going to take the project casually and 'have mercy' on people less fortunate, sadly I'm not the player for you.
Reason for Applying?:
I read the other experiment thread and found it to be an interesting and insightful read - despite that the legitimacy of it is questionable. It seems like a fun thing to participate in. I've been looking for some other ways to play Minecraft for a while anyway.

I am able to adminstrate the game, I have background experience as a moderator on several servers as well as running my own server for a few months. I have always worked well with others for projects and often assumed a leadership role with others.

Yes, I am able to work well with others on the project.

I have a particular interest for experiments and tests like these, I enjoy results and feel it would best be tested. See every other single post I have made for more information.

In the beginning the participants will probably be a lot more cooperative then the first experiment participants for sure. They will probably be more into saving resources for later, and they will tree farm, and set up ways to renew resources but what you've got to remember is that some resources, like diamond and iron, are not renewable in any way. Once you've used them they are gone and once that starts to happen you can no longer cooperate if you want to control that resource. You can't set up an infinite Iron spawner or something like that, to get it you've either got to trade for it, or take it by force. And while war is the complete collapse of cooperation, Capitalist systems like trading are early signs of failing cooperation that will mostly go over peoples heads. Sure at first it seems like a fair system but eventually prices will go up with dwindling resources and people won't be able to afford it any more and once that happens we see a definite split between the poor and the rich. It's all downhill from there

I would rather just wait and see, it will be different than alot of you expect.
too all of you who say this experiment wont work just remember this IS a new version of minecraft. different things will be more important then others. Reeds will be important to give an advantage to weapons via enchanting. animals must be monitored or else griefers can kill or steal your mobs. grass isnt very important anymore . iron is renewable because of zombies dropping it. sand will be important for making potions that will give advantages over battles. the nether is important because you can get Gold from pigman and ingredients from the things there. this will be a great experiment due to the new mechanics of the game!
As an observer I think i'm going to try and map out the map each day that is played and then try and create a log of how the map changes. Obviously I won't put up any of the maps until its over so that the participants don't have any advantage of knowing where everything is at all times.

btw as an observer what is it that i'm exactly tasked with doing?? Am I just supposed to be there to witness it? Or do I actually have a job? Like watching people so that if somebody is breaking the rules I report them to a mod?

I disagree with this tip, as it no longer restricts people to a certain distance. It's possible that, before survival instincts kick in and people become desperate, that people can farm up blocks solely for the purpose of expanding the playing field - giving them more room to work and, with enough ingenuity, more resources to gather. Minecraft water mechanics are horribly broken and absolutely unrealistic. There are so many ways to prevent drowning and none of them make any sense.
