My idea is for anyone that wants advice on overclocking to post here. I have searched the forums and I only found old threads.
My PC specs:
Dell i7 870 @ 2.93 turbo boost to 3.6 (There, are you guys done now?)
8 GB RAM
HIS iCooler ed. HD 7770 This PSU
I want to OC my CPU and GPU but don't know if I can even OC the CPU. If you need any more specs I can get them to you and want to know what you think the OC possibilities on this are. I have the stock fan but might get this one.
heres my advice.
build a custom computer that can overclock and won't combustion with the heat made.
read 10+ over clocking guides
then you can consider overclocking.

I am saving for a new pc. I have oc'ed an old dual core with a 6600 gt so I have idea of how to do it. It is a xps 8100.
I OC my i5 2500k to 5GHz, it renders a lot of stuff so the extra GHz helps a fair bit. H100i keeps it cool pretty well too, 70C tops with my fans at 1000RPM. Voltage is pretty good too, 1.38v, and my CPU is stable in Prime95, did a 36 hour test.
Obviously he expanded the storage capacity of his CPU with his overclock.
Gosh, people are so ignorant.
Not TB as in my 2 TB HD which is slowing my computer down because of it's transfer rate. It has the 8 MB cache.
Also, I think I can't OC my CPU because it isn't the k series? Is that right?
I am new to this but I have done it before so I really do not appreciate you guys saying that I am an idiot. It's annoying. Remember, you were new to OC'ing once too.
The main thing I want to overclock is my GPU. Maybe to 1.7 or so GHz.
Yea.....I would recommend you just stay away from overclocking completely because you have no idea what you're doing at all. You will NEVER get your graphics card anywhere near 1.7GHz. Most graphics cards won't even go above 1.2GHz.

They all suck. They just suck differently. Sort of like prostitutes.
Thank you, that meant the factory turbo boost. The main thing I want to overclock is my GPU. Maybe to 1.7 or so GHz.

Not really, I understand all the procedure, will do it gently and carefully, and certainly will be dilegent about how I do it.
I haven't even gotten around to it because 1: I don't need to, and 2: I'm still running on a stock cooler.

Think someone could do it using Liquid Nitrogen (or the other crazy liquid, what was it, Liq. Helium?)?

Not sure. I tried looking up graphics card overclock records, but I couldn't find any recorded information for graphics cards. It seems like people only record their CPU overclocks, but not graphics cards for some reason. It might be possible with liquid nitrogen/helium, but I can't find any sort of test results that would confirm that.

I've heard of 1.5 clocks, but not sure of any higher.
The reason might be that the really big names are also working for mobo manufacturers.. Asrock has some, Gigabyte a whole team, ASUS some, etc.
Dang, I must've gotten a really high bin, 'cause I can hit 1.175GHz/1550MHz @ 1185mV. Super stable on Kombustor, too. The heat becomes the limit at that point.
That said, I underclocked an Android I had for a bit. Battery life improved a bit. I haven't dialed up my CPU yet, 'cause my GPU is the limiting factor in games, and I'd rather have a broken GPU than a broken CPU, since GPUs aren't terribly great at writing essays or doing homework... Or running Windows, for that matter.
i5 4670k @ 4.9GHz - Stock Heatsink - The rest is melted silicon but I think I have a graphics card in there somewhere It surprises me how many people on this forum can't read benchmarks.

Is there a reason it's so uncommon to find extreme graphics cards overclocks? It just seems weird that finding overclocking records for graphics cards is so difficult compared to CPU records.

most don't care about clocks, most just go for highest 3D or Passmark they can get
“Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.” — Albert Einstein
"Never try to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and it annoys the pig." — Robert Heinlein
I stopped at 4.5 for the CPU partially because of cooling, but 65c while stress testing isn't too bad.. Which is why I say I could go higher but don't feel like it... No need to make it hotter for marginal performance gains...
The GPU is solely because I don't feel like spending hours slowly increasing the clock speed and stress testing it. No cooling issues there.

These forums are dumb and break my links. I'm bubbleawsome on steam too.

well i found this

Project RedShift
I could still go higher on both of them, but I don't feel like it.

CPUs can take more voltage abuse than GPUs can.
