Hi guys/girls my computers power supply recently broke and since it is an older gaming computer i was thinking about making a new one because as i understand, building one is a lot cheaper then buying one.
I was wondering what is the the best tech i could get for a 600$ budget? (video card, processor, etc.)
I already have a hard drive and 4gb of RAM (I want more though) and a keyboard, mouse and monitor.
I would like the computer to be able to run Arma 2 on med/high settings and mine craft on high settings. I can probably stretch my budget so no worries. If I am completely far off with my budget just let me know, haha sorry I'm kind of a tech noob.
What resolution will you be playing the games at?
Do you need a new operating system (windows 7)?
Also is the 4GB of ram DDR2 or DDR3?
Are you going to overclock?
You can most likely keep your optical drive too. (CD drive in other words).
If you still use Windows XP, I'd recommend that you get Windows 7, since Win XP doesn't support DX11, which is common is many games.
Without Windows 7, Build

-uhm i have no idea on resolution,
-For the games I'm going to play XP is fine
-i just remembered that the 4gb of RAM is DDR2 So ill just get new DDR3 Ram
-Idk What overclocking is
-Thank you so much for the help

get windows 7, there is no point in using a ancient OS, the GPU will not even touch full power, making it faintly useless, get Windows 7, hands down, or there is really no point in a new build

Ok Thank you for clearing that up. Is their anyway to get windows7 for cheaper? and would vista work or should 7 be prioritized?

Windows 7 is $99 for the OEM copy for system builders (yes it qualifies) you may be able to go from XP to Vista to 7 but it would most likely cost more then a new OEM disc

Ok. Also this would be good for like med/intensive gaming right?

Can't he just upgrade from XP to Windows 7 with an upgrade disc, even though those cost more...
I'd get Windows 7. XP probably won't be supported for much longer now that Windows 8 is on its way. For graphics cards, I use an Nvidia GTX 560ti which isn't super high-end, but it will run most modern games at either full or very high graphics with a reasonable framerate.
I don't know much about CPUs, but since my dual-core is starting to have a hard time with some games I'd recommend 3 or more cores. To estimate the cost of a processor, I use $25 times the number of cores. Overclocking is the act of running a processor faster than it's rated for. It improves performance, but voids the warranty and may overheat the system. You may need a new motherboard as well, so just make sure it has space for all the RAM you need and has the fight footprint for the CPU you choose.

My Website. I make mods for Minecraft and am also making my own game.

This way it'll last longer and any new games you want to play you wont have to worry about not being able to. Could you tell us the specs for your hard drive though? If its not equal or above 150GB 5400RPM, I would recommend this build which includes a hard drive:
This is a great resource for first time computer builders (what I used), and also remember to read through all of the parts manuals:
Also, the only reason I chose the case I did, was because its the one I use, but cases are almost entirely up to personal preference, so feel free to choose whatever you think looks cool!
Good luck!

Computer Specs: 4GB 1333 Mhz DDR3 RAM- 320GB 5400RPM Hard Drive- Dual Core Intel Core i5 2415M @2.3 Ghz- Intel HD 3000 Graphics- Only $1200! Yeah, I got a Mac, because I'm stoopid. Scratch that: Intel i5 2500k, 1TB 7200RPM Seagate Barracuda, Gigabyte Z68-D3H-B3, 8GB 1333Mhz DDR3 RAM, Radeon HD 6850, Running OSX.

The two builds listed there have two issues. They both have hard drives, which the OP already has, and they also have ram and an unnecessarily overpriced motherboard for only a 600$ budget.

First one doesnt have one, and I made an option with one if his HDD wasnt good enough. OP said he actually needed RAM, read through the comments. And I think the mobo is definetely appropriate.

A P67 motherboard is for overclocking and no integrated graphics.
An i5 2400 is a locked CPU, that can't go past 400MHz to its base clock. Not to mention, that motherboard has horrible ratings on Newegg. 36% of people rate it 2 eggs or 1.

He isnt using integrated graphics...? i5 2400 is plenty for this build, so it doesnt need to be overclocked.
67% of reviews are five stars on newegg (33 of 49)
All reviews on amazon are four or five stars.
This is a budget build, we cant stick a Geforce 670 in there.
*FACEPALM*
I said that a p67 motherboard is useless for an i5 2400. Since the i5 2400 is a locked CPU in the first place... good grief.
The second build is just bad. Overkill power supply and not a great one for the price. I still don't see why you put a hard drive, when the OP has one.

Screw reviews. He's talking about the GPU performance. And which 6770? The ones by Diamond? Are you kidding... There are dozens of 6770s out there. You need to more specific. This IS a budget build, we can't put a 100$ motherboard in it. Actually, Windows 7 is 100$. So 500$ build.

Yet again, its just because he might not have one thats sufficient.
I'm talking about the one I put in the build? I think thats a given.

if you don't overclock then no.
IIRC, Windows XP is supported until 2014 or so.
