Just out of general curiosity, I was looking through processors, and I was trying to compare the AMD Phenom with the Intel i7-960.
Does anyone have either of these processors or know the comparisons between the two? I use my current processor to render videos for YouTube and Minecraft, so I don't use it real heavy duty, but I do make it work sometimes, for close to 20 hours straight rendering really long videos (3-4 hours long).
AMD is great. It has a much better price/performance ratio, and I've never had issues with any AMD product. They're cheap, fast, and awesome. Intels are good for gaming, but an AMD works just fine and you pay less too.
I would say the i7 is better, but why are you looking at first gen i7's? An i7-2600 would be better for the same price, and you could get the overclockable version for 15$ more.

The AMD may be cheaper, but the 5/6th cores really won't be utilized that much and the performance will be less than the intel.

Yeah I guess, I didn't really check the huge price difference between the 2600 and the 960's. I guess it's only around $30 or so, so you'd recommend the i7-2600?
I've actually used the i7-2600 before, and it's an amazing processor, but I only used it for like 10 minutes, so not long enough to actually put it to the test for my work.

Yeah, but the CPU in my siggy is freaking AWESOME for gaming (when paired with my other parts.) You only really need 4GB of RAM, although I was going for future-proof. Intels are fine and dandy, but it's probably a better deal to get an AMD. If you have the money, though, it's your choice. What do you want, slightly higher performance at a high price or great performance at a lower price?

Yes, I have the i7-2600k and it's great. Also, the non-overclockable i7-2600 should be 300$, the same price as the i7-960 you posted.
EDIT: The 2600 is 10$ more and the 2600k is 30$ more.
For budget gaming get a PIIx4
For performance gaming get an i5 2500 or 2500k
The i7 is better than the x6.
The i7 performs exactly the same as the i5 for gaming.
The x6 performs exactly the same as first-gen PIIx4s and the i3 for gaming.
Do not get an i7 unless you are doing lots of 3D rendering and video encoding. Youtube videos do not count unless this is your source of income as a youtube partner. If you are not a parner, get the i5.
Do not get a PIIx6 unless you compile code for a living. That is the only application the AMD six cores/bulldozer excels in, with everything else the i3/i5/i7/PIIx4 do it better.
Cores =/= performance
GHz =/= performance
L3 cache means nothing. Cache sizes mean nothing for performance.
Hmm... seems like the 2500k is better with also quite a few multithreaded apps. Interesting how the 1100T is better with 3Ds Max, 7-zip and a few others though.
The 7zip result is quite interesting, I wasn't aware it took advantage of such hardware....

Mind you, that is comparing AMD's old flagship CPU (not that Bulldozer is better) to Intel's mid range CPU...
I personally have (and am currently using) and AMD Phenom II X6 1090T. It's a great processor, and very cheap for being a 6-core and has a pretty good price:performace ratio.
Although, if you were going for a gaming oriented PC, go for the i7. The i7 will blow anything else out of the water, easily. One of my friends has the i5, and it's passing up my X6! The i7 would leave the X6 in the dusty instantly.
So if your on a low budget and what the latest and greatest; then go for the AMD Phenom II X6
If you want an extreme gaming PC that destroys everyone else, then get the Intel i7.
There's also many benchmarks you can look up between the two, and you'll see what I'm talking about. :tongue.gif:
Hope that Helps. (Just my 2c :happy.gif:)
EDIT: When I say "passing up" my CPU, I'm talking about with Gaming benchmarks. For other benchmarks like 7zip, the 6-core does a little better (sometimes, can vary) then that i7. But the i7 would still (in my opinion) be a better pick if money isn't and issue.

Yeah, that was my intention. Reworded.
There is almost no reason to get an x6, really. :/
I'll just leave this here...

Considering it performs worse than both old Phenom II x4s and the i3s for gaming, that is a load of rubbish.
Well, then I better go make you happy and edit that out for you. :smile.gif:
