We all get inspiration from somewhere. Every artist, author, game developer got inspiration from something, and from there they created their own masterpiece/interpretation. It's definitely not copied or illegal, someone put a legit amount of time constructing FortressCraft just like Notch/Mojang put a legit amount of time into Minecraft. Both have their pros, and both have their cons. There is no reason to hate one game over the other just because it was inspired by the other.
I might actually play fortresscraft over minecraft considering fortresscraft is supporting a "server" like multiplayer, but then again it's creative only, so it's a no-go.

I've seen Fortresscraft gameplay, while not completely copying the game, it is definitely heavily influenced. Just the name "Fortresscraft" is already enough evidence that it was influence by Minecraft. From what I heard the creator can't take criticism, kinda like some people on a certain section of this forum.
I would be OK if the creator atleast admitted he got a little inspiration from Minecraft, but instead he denies any relation to Minecraft and insults Minecraft, Mojang, and fans.
You are wrong on the count of denying inspiration, its in the credits of the game, He is a little headstrong but he only winds the MC community up for 2 reasons whether these are right or wrong is a matter of opinion
1) It gets publicity, (for both games I will add)
2)Almost all posts regarding FC are bombarded by foul mothed comments from certain parts of this community.
Unfortunately in human nature will always gain a negative response, the guy is proud and stubborn so bombarding him with rubbish will result in unfortunate outbursts, the guy loves Minecraft, he plays it often and enjoys it, but he just can't help letting off steam sometimes
now enough flim flam check out this puppy if you will.
Oh, good. Someone else who actually understands what the FC dev does.

No, there has never, ever been a sandbox game with a story or ending... except Grand Theft Auto... and Saints Row... and Red Dead Redemption... and Crack Down... and Assassins Creed...

Heck yeah paul! I'm an avid player of FortressCraft, and honestly, the creative aspect of fortresscraft offers a lot more than minecraft's does, you should check it out. And seriously, it's three dang dollars. THREE. For the price of XBLA Minecraft, you could buy it and 5 other minecraft clones on the XBLIG marketplace and /still/ have $2 left over to go get an ice cream or something. 6 games and ice cream. Now that's a deal.
Sadly yes, it is a copy of minecraft. Sure there are other objects in the game that isn't in minecraft but looking at it it is a copy.
Ever heard that famous expression "don't judge a book by it's cover"? Well, that's what you just did. Looking at it, I understand it does look like a clone, but if you played the game and used the custom workshop, you would know that it has some cool stuff to offer.
He never does that, everyone thinks he does but he doesn't (also, Notch insults him a lot).

IMO, the idea that one game can be a copy of another is downright ****ing retarded. Here's my take.
First off, here's a analogy. Anybody remember that old Apple lawsuit against Microsoft saying they "copied" Apple?
The problem is that the word "copy" implies that they literally lifted code straight out of Mac OS and put it in Windows 3.0 But that's downright ****ing stupid. As somebody above said- they didn't "copy"- they took inspiration from. Especially in that case, since the original was in Motorola Assembler and the target was x86, they had to rewrite the entire feature set anyway. Worst case scenario is not that it was a copy, but a reimplementation based on a similar idea.
In this case, is the game idea completely original? Well, no. But let's be honest- there isn't a ****ing game developer in the world who creates ONLY original games. By which I mean, every learning programmer will probably write some sort of breakout clone, or pong, or some other well established game concept. The purpose is the establish the idea and game design principles by basing them on something that already exists. Unless you get a awesome epiphany, you can't have every developer coming up with unique ideas like Minecraft, and even those that do already made numerous re-implementations of existing ideas; just look at Notch's games history.
Whether the developer of FortressCraft is in it for the money doesn't matter. Of course he is. Hell Mojang obviously is too. FC's Developer is smart to have made a MC-like game available on a platform that it otherwise (at the time) wasn't available on.
That isn't to say that I like the FC Developer. I think he has very little integrity. I don't know him personally, of course, that's just my current take.
FortressCraft credits it's inspirations - ALL of them - in the CREDITS section of the game, and has done for *fifteen months now*.
Thank you. You really would've thought people would have figured it out. It's right there on the FC website.

I don't know why you guys bring up mods when talking about Minecraft. I'll agree, they're really awesome and all, but none of them were created or implemented by Mojang (apart from pistons), and they're not in the actual game, so it can't be argued against things that are already in fortresscraft.
For example, say I wanted to create billowing ANIMATED (that means moving) smoke. I could do that very easily in fortresscraft. I just have to make an 8x8 thing that looks like smoke, size it down to the size of one block, and put a grow/shrink animation on it so it looks like it's billowing out of a chimney or something. On the other hand, with minecraft, you would need 5+ mods to do this. I don't even know what you would need, but it would be difficult to find. I almost want someone to create a mod that emulates fortresscraft exactly, just so everyone can use it and see just how awesome it is.

However, when the creator started instulting Notch/Jeb and saying Minecraft is crap compared to Fortresscraft, it was different.
FortressCraft copied Minecraft that copied Infiniminer that most likely copies something else.
Venit, quessit, induravit.
None of those are copies of each other; just because it's made of blocks doesn't make it a copy.

I was being sweeping and over generalizing.

I didn't know that?
Wow now I hate the game more than ever.
