All I learned from Duke Nukem Forever was that review sites are prissy assholes who pay too much attention to graphics and ***** and complain about every little thing. I mean seriously? it got 57/100 on metacritic? I was pretty close to not bothering with the game, until I remembered that even citizen cane was booed by hollywood critics. And that game review sites are ****ing stupid. This merely reinforced that feeling. I do have some design issues with the game, but that is mostly in that it's not the same, formula-wise, as it's predecessor- that is, no secret rooms, no combination locks, etc. as far as I'm concerned DukePlus+HRP makes for a better experience all-around than DNF; and the polymer renderer for eduke32 makes everything look ****ing awesome. However: I attribute this to the fact that it is released for the consoles like PS3 and XBox 360; half- no, probably about 80% of the gamers who got DNF probably weren't even ****ing born when Duke Nukem 3d was released and have no idea what a ****ing satire is. Besides, the game follows the formula that most "modern" FPS players will be familiar with, It even has a moron mode where what you need to jam your action button with is glowing orange, no doubt this is specially designed for the gamers of today who always need instructions on where to go next. DNF feels like playing a good game like Megaman II but being forced to fight the robot masters in a particular order for no reason.
Basically: people who never played the original and play this one will think it's ****, because the concept of Duke Being a satirization of Rambo and stuff never occurs to them; additionally those die-hard fans of the first one (well technically the third one) won't like it because it tries to appease Console players by being one of those stupid games that have a "recharging shield" and completely linear gameplay. Not to mention absolutely no "marked" secret places, which was practically the signature of FPS games from the era of DN3D.
I just don't see what the big deal is. Of course it's not going to live up to what people think is 14 years of solid development (but probably wasn't, after all they restarted it like 4 or 5 times with different engines, no doubt discarding a lot of work in the process). Would I personally consider it a bad game? No, I've played plenty of games that I consider far worse that have somehow become popular. Conversely I wouldn't really call it a great game either, it's just par. Also, unlike Oblivion (which I never liked) and Fallout 3 + New Vegas, it doesn't crash every ****ing 15 minutes, IMO a more stable game will win out over a game that repeatedly crashes regardless of the content of either.FO3 and New Vegas are ****ing awesome but when you can only play 30 minutes before it says "Fallout3.exe has stopped working" it starts to get a bit tiresome.
At the very least It got me playing Duke Nukem 3D again. (eduke32+HRP+Polymer+DukePlus :biggrin.gif:)

Nostalgia is not a proper substitute for quality. It's also not satirical, in order to be satire you must satire something. I can think of no first person shooter in the last decade that has main characters similar to Duke. Even Gears of War, the most staunchly male-centric exhaustively macho game in years still have characters that hold little resemblance to Duke. As far as satire goes, you'd be better served with Bullet Storm.
10 years+ ago, DNF might have been a mildly amsuing game with average gameplay. Today it's an antique, the gameplay is badly outdated the pop culture jokes are painfully stale and the graphics bear the unmistakable signs of a game with a sorely troubled production history.
57/100 is more then fair for such a title, perhaps a bit high.
Games that get hyped up never live up to expectations. Best way to avoid getting disappointed is to have no expectations, that way you can enjoy the game for what it is, rather than hate it for what it's not.

LOL
Fallout 3 and Oblivion never crashed on my computer.
But yes, game review sites are full of **** and knows nothing about what makes a game a good game.
Otherwise, Black Ops would have a much lower MetaCritic score.
I never played the previous games, but I highly enjoyed Duke Nukem Forever. Quite comedic, had a bit of a challenge, and besides a few bugs or lack of animations or such during some scenes, I have no real complaints.
Personally I did not enjoy the game. Not because I'm some guy who never got to play the original.
Ive played the DOS duke nukem, I own the N64 version too.
Its just despite all those jokes and references, none of that made up for the actual gameplay for me.
Yes you start off pissing in a urinal and thats funny, but as every critic here has said, its so linear.
Just my two cents :smile.gif:

You really should freaking play Duke Nukem 3D, it is awesome. You can get it digitally and DRM-free from GOG.com for 5 dollars or you could search abandonware sites.
The game was made in 1996, if you cannot stand the graphics and the controls, then get the High Resolution Pack and DukePlus. HRP will turn most of the sprites into 3D models and put much higher res textures on the levels. DukePlus provides with some optional gameplay enhancements which can break the original 3 episodes (4 in the Atomic Edition), like dual-wielding pistols, a double-barreled shotgun, the ability to grab edges, enhanced enemy AI, oh and extra levels! Both will come with eDuke, which enables you to run the game natively in Windows and it has a much better default control scheme (WASD and mouse).
Watch it, though. Duke Nukem 3D can become really frustrating, especially on the higher difficulty settings and/or the farther into the game you go. And it is all skill and twitch based, unlike the crappy modern shooters of today which purposefully stifle your movement and aiming in addition to softening up the difficulty level for the sake of "realism".
actually since playing DNF I've only found that I've been playing DN3d more. DNF is starting to seem a lot more like it's trying to pass of a hamburger bun as a full hamburger, and I'm having to go elsewhere to get the filling for it. Hell to be honest my own video review of the game was critical. It would have been pretty damn good had it been released around the time of Doom 3.
I said before I've played far worse games. I still think oblivion is worse, but I've always thought that was ridiculously executed; but I've also played a lot of better games. About equal. That puts it halfway- 50%, so it get's a passing grade but just barely. Any "bonus points" given to it after that are probably from nostalgia, which after playing through that game a little more the game tries to force down your throat-
For example: at the Duke burger: it plays the music that played in the Duke Burger Level from DN3D's 4th episode (PREPD.MID). And so forth. The first few times I passed it off as a nod to the previous game, but now that I'm farther in the game it's starting to feel more like DNF is going to snap it's neck if it tries to give too many nods to the previous game. DN3D itself had very few references to DN2 or DN1, aside from the story.
So yeah I've kind of flip-flopped on it. I may have been mixing my enjoyment of playing the original (well not really, but with dukeplus/HRP etc which makes it look damn fine) that was inspired by DNF with what I felt while playing DNF itself.

Didn't compare to DN3D.
Things that made it bad:
2 weapon system
Linearality
Duke isn't who he was 12 years ago
Bosses can only be killed by Devastator or Turrets
Things that make it good:
It's a Duke Nukem game
Better than nothing
Ive played the DOS duke nukem, I own the N64 version too.

Just like how people say brink is a copy of tf2 because it has a sentry and a few elements.
Please, anything but Connor.
