Hmm I can't say I know enough to know if they had scythes for more than farming back then, but sure, a farmer under attack would probably have easy access to one.
They actually did have battle scythes back then for war. They weren't used very often, however.
Medieval weaponry is my favorite, simple but diverse. I would have to go with the sword, and maybe a dagger in the other hand. But, if there's fantasy involved...
Anyway, I prefer the katana. I have some skill with it and it's, unless i'm mistaken, the best sword there is.
There is no "best" sword. A weapon is only as suited as the one using it, and the situation you're in. High carbon katanas tend to chip up, or even snap when they get hit against just the wrong thing at just the wrong angle. The blade is curved and tempered on its spine, to direct shock away from the hands. They're light, maneuverable, and intended for hacking off limbs in a quick manner, or running someone through. Slashing is a common diversion.
The point is, it was the best at what it did when it did anything . But you pit samurai up against a massive army of armored opponents, or opponents with shields, you're out of luck. The only reason the samurai went from horseback archers to wielding bladed weapons, was the attempted invasion of the chinese. To better counter the enemy they were faced with.
Yeah, European straight and double-edged blades are better for stabbing that katanas. And on the other hand, katana is good for cutting limbs off.
I disagree sir! A double edge long sword would blow a katana out of the water at both stabbing and cutting, assuming both are of equal quality. Katanas aren't that great, honestly. They're lighter than European style swords, but they just aren't as amazing as anime kids make them out to be.
Ok. So new question, same topic, not too different. You're armed with nothing but a longbow made of oak, a throwing knife, and a larger, heavier knife hard enough to deflect a sword without a mark. There is an angry man hurdling towards you wielding a battleaxe. What do you do? This is in Medieval times, mind you.
Someone's a Rangers Apprentice fan (like me) The correct answer is you shot him, and since you never miss, he gets killed.
But seriously, backed up against a cliff, with just a short throwing knife and a heavy knife (saxe) with a bow...its exactly like the scenario Gilan gave to Will and Horace in I believe the second or third book.
Nice and fast, and good for assassinations, of course.
Ouch. But I reload pretty fast, and I would be hiding behind a rock by then.
The sword speaks louder at any given moment though.
If I have to go with pre-gunpowder weaponry pikes are very nice.
Thanks for telling me that I wasn't aware
Unless you use your sword as a pen.

I'm going to cheeze your rules and say this:
I am of the belief that the Wakizashi is the longest practical blade type still in existence.
