This is a stylized record of my attempt to survive in a world with no friendly mobs, no saplings , and one seed to produce food with. If the seed fails to drop more seeds, I will probably fail. The difficulty is normal.
The theme and idea was inspired by this thread.
Day 1
I find myself alone, on both the shore of a desert, and an ocean. Each seems vast and daunting.
The animal life is sparse and fading, and the remnants of a forest linger across the land. It seems that some blight has wrought this place as it is, scouring the land of all life.
I managed to find a single seed, and I believe all my hopes now lie in it. With some simple tools, and some shelter from the sun and wind, I may be able to survive this barren place.
Night is falling fast...
Day 2 My plant is growing! It looks strong and healthy; I can only hope that it can produce seeds. This seems to be a freshwater ocean, or a very large lake.
During the night... Something attacked me. I don't know what it was, it's corpse disappeared, but it groaned and mumbled and looked... very much like a person...
Whatever the creature was, I've decided to plant some cacti around my simple dwelling, in the hopes that their thick thorns will deter another visitation.
I'm badly injured, I don't know how long I can make it. All I can do is harvest wood and stone to build with, and hope to Notch that my little plant can make it! As the second night falls, I've decided to change my shack to allow me to return fire. I can strike at the feet of my mysterious assailants, giving me an advantage over them.
Night has fallen. At first I thought I was safe, but as the hours slid past, I heard the sound of crunching sand... coming from different directions. A hoard of beings besieged me, and it was only my careful defenses that allowed me to hold on, although I was struck at least once. One seemed to be a giant spider, perhaps a mutant, or a product of this twisted environment.
I also heard the groaning of whatever attacked me before, maybe another one...
Only a person could make sounds like that...
But then, there was the newcomer. Some beastly hissing abomination, a phallic upright quadruped that pushed against these walls with all it's might, single-mindedly.
What could it be?
Day 3
After a night of rousing combat, I have found gunpowder, strong thread, arrows, and feathers. I've made a basic bow, but until I can find something to fashion arrowheads from, my use of it will be limited to the arrows I have. I will search for anything that could be used as I gather supplies today.
My Plant pushes on, slowly unfurling it's tiny leaves. It's clearly a grain, and if I can harvest enough, I'll be able to make bread! The cacti I planted around my house prove to be a great defensive line against these nocturnal monsters, and add a degree of comfort to my life, if only psychological.
This morning I made an interesting discovery. It seems these ghouls and stalkers that trouble me in the night, cannot stand the light of day! As if Notch himself reached down, I witnessed them burst into flame, aiding me in their dispatch. I've been able to gather quite a bit, given the hostile nature of this place.
I found what looks like the entrance to a cave.
Loose shale and granite had built up, and in amongst it, I found flint!
As I dug the rock free, I heard moaning and clinking coming from deeper within the cave. I decided to retreat due to my condition, so that I could live to fight another day.
The desert seems to stretch in all directions...
I've crafted some arrows, and I can now protect myself from more of a distance.
Maybe tomorrow... Maybe tomorrow my little plant will grow.. my life-line.. My head is swimming, my body aches, and for now I must sleep.
Day 4
I've crafted a crude raft, the construction of which was oddly familiar to me, so that I could explore the immediate area via water.
I've found what can only be papyrus... where in the world am I?
I've planted some, and soon I will craft a book to write all of this down in, in case my memory fails me.
When I returned to my home, I was met with the best sight my weary eyes could see. My plant has grown fully! The grain it produces won't be enough to feed me on it's own, but if it has even one fertile seed, I'll be able to grow another.
I approached it, almost unwilling to check the husks, realizing that this is the crux of my existence now.
I gently cut the base, and upon inspection... I found a fertile seed!
The progress is slow, but steady. I'm closer now to achieving a sustainable existence. Due to my injuries, I've been trapped in my shack at night, too weak to defend myself. The moans and scratchings of the midnight hoard trouble my sleep. I had a dream last night, where I saw one of the hissing things that creep around my walls.
I couldn't sleep for the rest of the night. This evening, I put all my thoughts to page, so there will at least be some record of my tribulations.
The sun sets once more...
Day 5
Sunrise in the desert isn't a beautiful act of nature.
It isn't a glorious life-bringer returning to strengthen his people.
It is a warning.
In a mad rush, I broke my plant apart, searching it for seeds. It seems my hunger could destroy me long before I starve. However, it also seems that Notch smiles on me, as there where TWO fertile seeds. Both now grow, and with the grain they will produce, I may yet live.
I carefully ventured into the cave I had found, listening intently to make sure nothing was around. I found a small amount of iron ore!
I also saw just how expansive these caves are.
On the return trip, the ground caved in beneath me, and I almost broke my legs, gripping the edge just in the nick of time. This wasteland is so very hostile!
Back at my house, I broke up the ore and smelted it into ingots, but I can't do much with the pittance I have.
In my haste to survive, I haven't spent a lot of time wondering how I got here, but the thought hit me as I was cutting down a tree. I have no idea who I am or where I've come from. I have no clue how I ended up here. If I can stabilize my condition, I think I'm going to see if I can figure out my origin; how I got to this place.
Day 7
I'd prefer to keep yesterday out of my mind. It was a day of weakness and despair, and I finally know what it is to stare into the abyss. I think the only reason this entry is present is because of the surprise I received last night! I went out for my final drink of water, before the evil crawled across the land anew, and saw that my crops had both matured!
I can finally bake the bread I've been dreaming of -- oh to sink me teeth into it's golden skin! Harvesting them was joy in and of itself, as they yielded FIVE fertile seeds.
My crops shall keep me alive! I relished in the husking and baking of my bread last night.
After eating -- slowly, to make sure that my swollen belly doesn't regurgitate the food, I began to feel more stable. The strength is returning to my bones. I'm going to farm for several days, and then I will begin my journey. There is a place over the horizon, that I always hesitate to travel towards.
I have the sinking feeling that I will discover the truth if I lay my path upon it...
Further exploration of the caves found me scant minerals, but I believe I've mapped them all out. It can be unsettling to explore these subterranean, as they are not without their dangers.
When I returned to my shack, I discovered I had a visitor.
Of the spiders that strike at me through cracks in my walls, the very same seem to be harmless in the sun. It looked at me, hissed in warning, but then it also allowed to gently touch it. Perhaps it is too warm for it to hunt? I don't feel threatened by this fellow, but I will not let my guard down against his kind. With the minerals I've gathered, all I need now is some food for my journey. My crops grow.
This is pretty cool, better then most stories I have seen/read. If only you could post the original map (like before you did anything), then we can all suffer.
Thats an amazing idea. Im just about to do the same, but i will turn water into sand and diamonds into water sources, to make things just a little more challenging and desert-like. Thanks for this great idea!
I like that a lot! Note that if you're doing the one seed thing, you'd better find diamondwater really quick. You're gonna get hungry.
I've been trying to think up a way to reduce the amount of water on the surface without removing it. If you had lots of small, shallow pools, you could swap grass->sand and sand->grass at the same time to make oases. The only current way I can think of is to just find a map with very little water.

I could always make a new one, but you should probably use mine edit to make your own; as you progress, the map gens new grass and trees on new chunks, which means a bit of maintenance is required as you go, to keep it all desert

I'd suggest redstone into water... and leaving diamonds as is.

I am guessing you swapped all grass for sand?
I might try something like this, with the addition of swapping wood for cacti!
I did that.... it looks good but... you need wood for stuff so it doesn't work :/
Swap bamboo for wood!
edit:

Is that some kind of re-skin on the Cactus? Flowers? O_o
yep! I've made a few changes to match my personal aesthetic tastes. I'll post the skins here. Redstone-> copper ore, Redstone Torches-> battery powered switches, Bamboo-> Papyrus, Flowering cacti, etc.
