Hello, this is a start to a (hopefully) complete survival starting guide. Any creative criticism is appreciated. NOTE: THIS GUIDE IS SOMEWHAT CENTERED AROUND PEACEFUL MODE.

1. Spawning
When you first spawn, you should probably check to make sure that the continent you have is sufficient to sustain any base you would like. If it is not, you can either delete the world or just travel to another continent. After that, you will want to find some trees and begin to chop them down. About 16 trunk blocks (64 wood blocks) will be sufficient for right now. You can also spend the time to get an extra 16 trunk blocks that can be used to make basic structures. You should probably to go to your inventory and create a crafting table. At this point, you can either settle down right where you are or choose to move to a more permanent land structure. In either of the cases, you should create a wood pickaxe and begin to mine some stone. When your wood pickaxe breaks, you will want to use the stone you have mined and create 1-2 stone pickaxes. By now, it should be either night time or getting dark. You might want to find some coal and create torches. 2 trunk blocks and 16 coal will create a full stack of torches. Finding torches by the first night is optional, but if possible, recommended. By now, you will have created a mini-base and are in the second stage of play.
2. Gathering
Right at this stage, you will want to begin a mine and maybe start to go exploring, leaving torches behind as markers. You should also add on a furnace and chest or large chest to your base. Once you are sustained by a steady mine and have plenty of wood, torches, and stone, you should begin to expand. At this point in time, you can really do whatever you would like. There are many things you can do, but I would recommend creating some sort of farm. How you make it is all up to you.
3. Creativity
Congratulations on making it to this stage! At this point, you are becoming free to do whatever you want. You could build a castle or maybe even a city? Whatever you do, remember to continue to expand your storage and create larger mines and farms. I would also recommend having a tree farm to supply your needs of wood.
FAQ
Q. Where can I find the crafting templates for items?

Could be useful, but let me be the first to say that it is no longer called infdev. Call it survival, or else newcomers won't know what you're talking about.

Thanks, I'll do that right now.

Personally, I find it better to get about 30 wood; It gives you a full stack of wood, sticks, and some leftover wood for the basic structures. Two logs and 16 coal can make a whole stack of torches, so that is good to do when you get enough coal.

Thanks, I went ahead and added that into the text.

I agree with Cheeseyx, that's a pretty good way to start. Also, in my experience, you don't need to find coal for torches by the first night. If you build your shack small to start, you can spend the night there safely since mobs tend to spawn a decent distance away. It is always nice to find coal so that you can mine at night, but if you can't find any, you can still be safe.
Really, dying before you find coal isn't much of a setback anyway unless you've explored far from the spawn point.
If you are playing in normal/hard, you probably already know how to play :tongue.gif:

Storage Room:
After mining so much you will probably have a lot of useless cobble (unless you had some fun cave travels)
You might have lots of bacon and who knows what else. So what you need is a storage room or building. In it you would have a chest per item and above that chest would be some sort of marker about what items are in the chest.
Possible Chests: Bacon chest
Armor chest
Weapon chest
mining chest
etc....
Updated the guide with some minor edits, and addition to the text.

I've gotten lost a few times because my way back out of my cave system was torches, and there was lava in many areas, which confuses me sometimes.
