Alright, seeing as there are 1000000 topics about this, I decided to make a sort of "guide" to help those who need it. Seeing as this is my first guide for Minecraft, it might not be the best.
THE STUTTER, WHAT IS IT?
The "stuttering" that happens sometimes when traveling in Minecraft Infdev is an attempt by the game to stop you from entering un-generated areas. It is, however, sometimes preventing you from entering already generated areas.
HOW DO I KNOW I HAVE THE STUTTER?
You will know when you have hit a "Void" when the screen beings to shake violently. You can still look around and delete objects without any lag, but you will be unable or hardly able to move in any direction. You may also notice some mobs/blocks stuttering inside of the Voids range. If you can see a pitch black area, aka the Monolith, stay away from that area.
HOW CAN I AVOID THE STUTTER?
The only way to avoid it is to ensure you do not go near it. After a while, it should go away (UNCONFIRMED). Backing away from the Void will also ensure you do not get completely trapped. Marking areas where you stutter at can help, but it might be better just to avoid the entire area. If you can manage to reach the Monolith, and light it with the torch, the stutter should disipate (UNCONFIRMED).
You CAN fight the stutter. If you have "change fog distance" set to a hotkey (mine is "v"). Then hit it rapidly, it allows you to get about a quarter second of movement each time you hit it. So if you hold "w" and keep hitting your fog button, you can (slowly) traverse the "void".
CAN THE STUTTER BREAK MY SAVE?
I am not completely sure, but I am leaning towards it just being a problem with the generating of levels, thus, as long as you leave it alone, it shouldn't mess up any saves.
OTHER QUESTIONS?
Q: Can it develop in areas of maps that have already been generated or does it have to happen with newly generated chunks?
A: I am unsure, although it might. I will try to see if it does. I had just generated a new level, and about 5 steps from my spawn in any direction would cause the stutter. Thus, it might.
A bit of a side note, but an area I had marked as a stutter area is now working perfectly for me. I can walk around and the mobs act just fine. This fixed itself just after I started Notch's new applet launcher.
HEY. I actually have something useful to contribute. Put it in your original post:

Rule number 1 of Minecraft: Never mine the ground under your feet. Ever.
For me, looking straight up or down allows normal movement speed while in a "void".
I had a good section of a cave (maybe 32x32) that was a void I found while riding a waterfall into the depths of the world. This went away after restarting the browser (not just reloading the map).

We'll see how quickly we'll get a stabilization update. I can be patient.
Just tested these out, they don't work.

You make it sound like an STD. :?

1. There does not have to be a monolith (or dark spaces) to get it, and sometimes a monolith does not produce a stut-t-t-t-t-er
2. Saving and refreshing does work, but sometimes the void just moves near where it was before.
3. You are more likely to find a stutter than you are diamond or a treasure room.
4. If you come across a "void", simply aVOID that area :laugh.gif:
The thing that floors me is that the framerate doesn't drop, only the speed of everything that has physics, strange...
It may not seem much now, but soon that will seem like a lot.

I'm pretty sure just the void you had there is gone. You will most likely run into another one soon.
