So I figured out this cool trick to making neat lighting, so I thought I'd share with all of you on the forums! I'll show an image of the end result of my findings, then describe how I did it.
Now if you look, the room is bright as day, but there are clearly no torches, windows, or any source of light.
Well one day I was messing around in survival single player, and I discovered something. If you place stairs, lights go through them! So I had the idea, why not make a room with walls of stairs? That way I could make it completely free of ugly torches or any other source of light, yet completely illuminated! Here's a picture of what's behind the walls:
Pretty neat, yeah?
This could also be used for things such as illuminated mine shafts and stuff, without any visible light source, etc. Hopefully you all will be able to use this in your minecraft creations! Also, feel free to post any other ideas you have for uses of this, I'd be glad to hear them!
Haha, that's real cool! I know of another cool lighting trick..

This blocks the light from getting past the half block, so the room will be completely dark asside from what's behind the torch. I guess it only works on peaceful, otherwise mobs can probably spawn.
That is SO cool! Just too bad you'd have to have it all cobble stone, otherwise it wouldn't match. Or I guess wood too... but clean stone is my love. Neat trick though, I will try this!
It's a cool trick, but I think the resources needed to make the thicker wall make it not worth it. Although, it would be great on thick castle walls... I might actually use this
Tai24: I had never thought of that, but that's a pretty cool trick. But what might you use it for?
WolfHound: Yeah, it's kind of a bummer 'cause stairs are only cobblestone or wood.. Maybe if you found a graphics pack that changes stairs to smooth stone? Otherwise you'd have to stick with wood or cobblestone, haha
Lithiumantis: It does require a bit more space and stuff, but if you're willing to put the extra stone in it looks pretty nice. And cool! Be sure to show me if you end up using it, I'd love to see! Also, it might be nice for hallways and mineshafts and such, where it's smaller so it doesn't take as much stone.
Yeah it works nicely. I just tried it in a small area underground just to try it out. I'm not sure where to use it in my buildings yet, but thank you for the tip.
May you find a huge diamond vein for sharing your cool trick.
I just tried it out on a small mineshaft/hallway, here's the result (it's a shorthallway, I didn't want to use too many torches, haha)
quandary? I use that texture pack too!
also, we need some1 to test if it works with redstone torches. imagine a room with no light sources, but flickering light and dark using a rs circuit? perfect, perfect, perfect mine entrance. i will go test that now.
I've used cobble stairs as roofing material on a couple of my buildings. They're not as bulky looking as regular blocks. I never noticed that light passed through them because these buildings all had windows. Then I built my nether temple.. I wanted the inside to be dark and eerie. I decided to use cobble stairs as the roof. it was daytime as I laid the last piece of stairs and the building was complete... I had to run and check out the inside. I walked in and...WTF!!! why is it soooo bright?! Yeah, that's pretty much the moment I discovered it lol
On the bright side, my starting hut which was over my mine shaft had a cobble stair roof. I replaced the wood floor with glass and now had a sunroof for my mine :smile.gif:
I don't know if light passes through wood stairs. I would assume so, but then again, one should never assume anything when it comes to mindcraft :wink.gif:
it works with redstone torches just fine, i discovered. i made a chamber of all cobblestone, then put redstone lights that light the chamber, through the cobblesstone stairs. i configured a redstone circuit to make these lights flicker on and off really fast, and went inside, and man, the constant on-off lighting made my brain hurt like the seccond i walked in... i dub it the epilepsy chamber.

With his amount of posts, I assumed he was just trolling.
Looking at his other posts, I think he might be serious.
I knew light could bypass stairs, but I never thought of utilising it like this. This is ingenious, I will use this, thanks!
Also, the dark room idea with the half block is perfectly safe if you tile your room with half blocks, as mobs can't spawn on them. This would make for a very nice museum/gallery like room. As for the epilepsy chamber idea, that could be turned into a dance floor!

Now just add 1-clocks connected to doors and you have the ultimate annoyance room. ;D
