lassos and collars for pig/sheep farming

Postby matthew102000 » Tue Feb 09, 2010 1:36 am

anybody think it would be fun to have lassos to catch pigs and sheep, then colars to put on them so they dont dissapear?
and if you dont know what a lasso is...
http://members.memlane.com/gromboug/lasso.gif
just a rope thats used to catch animals.

this way, pig and sheep farming would become more practical...

I lol'd. But this is a good idea. Maybe you can use it to catch blocks jumping in lava.

Maybe the lasso could also be a sort of grappling hook, to get from place to place...

The problem lies in the sheep/pigs dropping the string necessary to tie them up... that doesn't seem right... something should be worked out how to get that sheep wool -> string -> cloth as the current survival score gameplay allows us.

I'd like some way or another to wrangle sheep & pigs. Rope should be an item in and of itself.

I like this idea. You could simply walk up to an animal and right click/E to tie it. And it would you a follow player script until the rope is removed.

And it should be easier to implement/ more effective now AI path finding is added :D

+1 from me.

Why not.
After all pigs aren't going to drop string forever... I am sure it'll be coming from cotton anytime soon now after farming is implemented... and those pigs really need to be restrained.

Once the sheep go back to eating grass and growing wool, there could be some shears tool to use on sheep to get string. Growing cotton is another good idea for getting string without killing mobs and getting twenty+ flints. With farming added, domesticating animals would be a fun thing, IE a pigpen of mud tiles that the pigs don't leave, or blocks that the animals won't jump over unless being led so you can make fences that work on animals but not you.

Hmm, I'm not sure I'm too keen on this idea. It seems a bit far fetched going around lassoing pigs and sheep in this particular game.

What I would like though is making the sheep/pig AI more easy to herd. So you could herd them into a fenced area (another idea :) ) or something like that.

I recall a suggestion that requested the ability to pick up pigs/sheep with E. While you held the animal, you couldn't do anything with tools without putting it down. I like this solution a lot more than lassos and collars.

(And I also really just want to throw sheep and pigs into lava pits by hand.)

Pigs are like 400+ Pounds for a decent sized one. Not sure 'bout sheep, but you probably can't lift that :P

Also, I like the idea of a lasso, but maybe a cattle prod, made like so:

[ ][i][ ]
[ ][f][ ]
[ ][w][]

I = Material (Wood, stone, ect)
F = Flint and Steel (To make it hot, maybe reverse order with I
W = Stick
OR

[ ][f][ ]
[ ][s][ ]
[ ][s][ ]

S = Stick, F = Flint/steel

It be cool if you could have like a poll, or maybe just a piece of wood, so you could tie the animals up to something. then, if say notch adds horses, or even for the pigs, could add the things horses drink out of, its name escapes me now. then animals can have food, and we can have hay, another thing to add for farming. it all fits together.

I don't think sheep herding should require crafting a ton of lassos and dragging each sheep back to your pen. Why not just craft some sort of noisemaker or something that would have the sheep walk away from you. You could then gather them into a herd, and guide them to your pen all at once.

Also, pigs trapped in a pen should breed and provide a continual source of delicious ham.

I agree! I like the idea about pigs/sheep being able to breed (not cross species :P) And Sheep should, ofcourse, grow new wool.

About means of herding the sheep, you could use fire to scare them, or if they are scared of players you could just chase them into a fenced area.

What if you could use saplings as sheep and pig food? Or just harvest leaves, which is food, but you can also make the leaves saplings? =P

Yeah, pigs would be more useful to have around than sheep. Also, from the sound of it, cows and chickens would be reaaally nice to have fenced in by your house, once they are added to the game. Milk, beef, hide, ham, and feathers right outside your door!
