I have started on my first 16x16 texture pack. I'll be regularly updating this thread as I progress and I ENCOURAGE posters to be critical of my work. Just try to keep it constructive. If you don't like it, tell me WHAT and WHY. All content is original except for a few Painterly Pack things you may spot in the background that I have not gotten around to replacing yet (This is WIP)
I have received a small number of complaints about my pack looking too much like Painterly. Here's a direct comparison between the two: Open each link in a separate tab and move between them. http://imgur.com/Br1AK.png http://imgur.com/JsCSA.png
Alternate Cobblestone, Doors, Torch, Lever, Ladder and Rails; BRAND NEW! What do you think?
Clay; brick in the background for context
Cacti; pretty basic, may redo them so they don't resemble Painterly as much
Crafting Table, Furnaces, and Treasure Chests; fixed a slight alignment/shading issue with the unlit furnace
Cobblestone, Smoothstone, and Mossy Cobblestone; no changes
Ores; no changes
Dirt, Gravel, Sand, and Glass; no changes
Cloth, TNT, and Bookshelf; no changes
I have also finished the leaves, snow, and ice. However, they are pretty standard so no pics should be necessary. They are available upon request if you would like.
Thanks guys, yeah the gravel seems to be giving me the hardest time so far... If you think it's bad right now, you should see my old attempt from before. It was hideous! I'll add a touch of redness to the iron while I'm at it.
Since my last update, I've complete the bookshelf, mossy cobblestone, cloth, mob spawner, leaves, and TNT. I'll post them after I do some fixes to the gravel and iron
PS. What exactly can I do to improve the gravel? How can I make it more gravelly?
im not sure about the obsidian... it's too orderly tiled to be obsidian (real obsidian has crack patterns and grows in more rock/crystal-like shapes, sorta like emerald but less orderly)
Yeah, I took a peek at your texture pack earlier. I thought I made a post about it but it must not have registered! Anyways, yeah I'm not really sure about your gravel either. I don't like the big round rocks to be honest. I'll stick with the noise gravel for now. I'll get around to a solution for it eventually.
Attention All Readers:
I Have just updated the original post, take a look!
hozz: And pigs don't spawn from thin air O_O
Anyways, I like it the way it is right now although I do agree with you that it isn't realistic. Maybe when I get the rest of the terrain.png finished, I'll go back to it and give is sharper edges/disorganize it a bit
Oh I repeted sorry but I know your going to say I said there is painterly stuffbut I mean why not make your own? What ever I just hate people who take credit for other peoples work so make sure you change it
I'll admit, in retrospect, that the cobblestone looks a lot like the Painterly Pack one, but it isn't that EXACT same one. I had a different one before, but upon request I changed it to something more natural-looking. and how unique can you make smoothstone, seriously? My halfstone uses a very common design that is used in Painter Pack and even the default terrain.png, so I don't understand your problem with that.
As for the glass, it used to be different. But again, upon request by many people (in my old thread), they preferred one with just a simple border around it, so that is what I did.
Are you going to get on my ass about having brick that looks the same as every other texture pack? What about the bookshelf, cloth, and log? Hell, even snow and ice if you want to get really nippy. All of those things have a pretty standard "look" in Minecraft that I want to keep.
The shrub is a placeholder from Painterly. I am not taking credit for anybody else's work and to be honest I'm am insulted by such a direct accusation. Every tile that I have completed has been done by my own two hands. I am sorry if you are butthurt that some of my things look like Painterly, really.
I really like your bedrock and obsidian. The Mossy Cobblestone just looks like a brick palette swap. It feels cheap.
You're right that I did reuse the brick texture. However I don't feel how it could be considered any more "cheap" than just reusing the cobblestone texture, like how most Mossy Cobblestone textures are done.
Comparing this side-by-side with the Painterly pack, everything looks like it's slightly changed and recolored. Especially the logs, cobblestone, and cloth.

That's funny, when I actually put the two terrain.pngs side-by-side, I found that it only made it easier to notice the differences between the two. Open them up in separate tabs and see for yourself: http://imgur.com/c4hqk.png http://imgur.com/5Uoqz.png
Admittedly, the cobblestone is too similar and I will be changing it. I don't really like the way mine looks right now anyways, it looks too scaly

Nice.
The wood looks too busy (too much noise) and the planks have those dark spots which are too distracting imo.
I agree that the wood is a bit noisy, I like the planks how they are with the spots, since wood usually has knots and imperfections in it in real life. I may tone them down a bit, now that you mention it though. Thanks

i think you should switch the obsidian and cobble stone patterns. :smile.gif:
I like the obsidian the way it is, I'm still working on the cobblestone however as there have been complaints about it too much resembling Painterly Pack

Very, very nice. :biggrin.gif: Is there any way we can download it? Or is it still i progress?
It's still in progress, I might release a version of it later this week if I get lots done. As of now, too many things are left untouched for me to release it I think

...The bright yellow book on the bookshelf is a bit too bright, it stands out way too much. The second is a major gripe of mine. Grey clay = Red Brick = NO NO NO NO NO NO NO oh mama mia mama mia mama mia let me go beelzebub has a devil put aside for red brick...
Thanks for noticing that hideous book on the shelf :tongue.gif: I'll tone it down. I'm sorry for your hatred of red bricks, but I like it and it'll stay. I was planning on making the clay red when the times comes
I really love the look of the logs, planks and glass. The new gravel looks amazing, it actually looks usable (Compared to the default gravel texture). I'm not sure if the tiled look of the obsidian looks right but other than that I think it looks great.

(PS) I see a pig...
He said he already completed it. And it still looks exactly like the Painterly Pack.
Sleekcraft! Check it out!
