Installation
Extract the Minerva Cup Regatta v1.4.0 folder to your .minecraft/saves directory. Do NOT create a new folder when extracting, the World folder is contained in the archive file. Verify the installation by checking that the level.dat and other world files exist in the .minecraft/saves/Minerva Cup Regatta v1.4.0 directory.
The Minerva world is current with Minecraft version b1.4_x. No mods are required to play.
Players
There are no player limits to this event. Can be played as a solo challenge or multiplayer, teams are optional. Enough materials are provided for up to 16 players, and more players can be supported, limited only by the number of boats the server can handle.
Equipment
Boat, Compass, Wood (16), Stone (16)
Objective
To be the first player to successfully navigate by boat around the main continent of Minoa and return across the finish line. Sounds easy? It's not! The route is vast with many deceptive areas to get lost in. A true test of any explorer!
Setting Up
The night before the event, players must take their supplies and prepare whatever equipment they think they will need on the journey from the provided 16 blocks of wood and stone. Extra boats and a set of tools are recommended at minimum. Gathering and cooking extra food is also permitted.
When preparations are complete, use an available bed to set respawn location. At sunrise, players must take their boats to the starting line and head out with the official call to start.
Gameplay
The event can head initially either West or East, taking sailors clockwise or counter-clockwise around the continent, respectively (West is the traditional direction, but it is not set in stone). The direction should be agreed upon prior to starting and all contestants must follow the same direction. There are multiple routes around the course, some offering a more direct path and others a safer or easier passage. Familiarization with the provided navigation chart is advised.
Still longer than Portal!
Anything goes in this race except for travel across land. When going ashore to gather more supplies if necessary, players must take to sea from the spot where they landed.
Players may attack one another once out of sight of the starting line, or may agree ahead of time to race peacefully. Monsters may be enabled for this event for an added degree of challenge and adventure. Note that bows, arrows and their components are not supplied equipment, but may be crafted during the journey if the materials are acquired.
Navigation can prove challenging, especially at night, as the fastest route is often a straight path into open waters, out of sight of the torchlit pylons which periodically mark the shores and reefs around Minoa and most adjacent lands. Following these pylons is a safe route but this will also take you into time-consuming cul-de-sacs and bays which a shrewd navigator would know to avoid.
Because the worldspawn is very near the starting line, you can use the compass to always keep the goal on the same side of you as you circumnavigate the continent. If travelling clockwise, it should remain on your starboard, or right-hand side.
Take care in shallow canals, narrows or near reefs where strong currents have formed. If your boat is destroyed, be sure to carry a spare or you must make a new one from scratch!
This is the ultimate endurance event, and also a very relaxing and pleasant adventure. There’s no better way to explore the beautiful and mysterious world of Minerva. When crossing the finish line, the satisfaction of completing a dangerous journey around the entire massive island of Minoa is one of the more rewarding experiences Minecraft has to offer.
The approximate length of the Minerva Cup is over 13 nautical km (13,375m)!
Current Record: 45 minutes (2 ½ in-game days).
For maximum enjoyment of this event, an appropriate musical selection is an important consideration! The Zelda Wind Waker sailing theme is a nice choice, but I recommend Herbie Hancock’s Maiden Voyage album for a smooth experience. Perfect mood and running time!
Aw man dude. Aw man. You have given me inspiration here. I'm going to make a Super Hostile footrace map. I'm thinking, footrace following an obsidian road, that occasionally has obstacles that require you to build things to get past (gives people behind you a chance to catch up). Also gotta include traps for people to run into, monster spawners (the sky will be blacked out to make the landscape be in darkness, obviously), and traps the player can wait at and trigger when other racers come to them. Oh, and ghast spawners.
Basically, a marathon through hell - and also the other runners want to kill you. :biggrin.gif:

Yes! I want to see this! I have a combat foot-racetrack in progress as well but it is already very different from what you described (no monsters, for starts). Your idea sounds awesome! Actually all your Super Hostile maps sound really fun, looking forward to trying them out.
I'm really anxious to release this next map, but it just needs a bit more polish, so here's a preview:
And a map of the whole thing:
Finally, I accomplished my goal of creating 10 fun new sporting challenges, each one taking advantage of unique aspects of Minecraft physics, items and gameplay. All of these games offer enjoyable competition for multiplayer, but several events can still be played solo for practice.
The illustrated guidebook is about 30 pages, complete with maps and comprehensive rulesets for all games. It's almost ready, stay tuned! Tons of new pics in the album here.
It's finally here, and it's massive! Head on over to this thread to check out my new series of 11 Multiplayer Challenges plus a whole lot of surprises waiting to be discovered! The CRISWELYMPICS have arrived!
Taking a short break from Criswelvania development, I just navigated a new southern route that is even longer, I'll be updating this map soon with an extended course of over 30km. I haven't properly measured the distance or done a speed run yet -- been sailing and map marking for the past 5 days across an incredibly long and convoluted waterway that to my great delight (and relief) reconnects to the open water on the far East side of the map. Now the way is lit with pylons to aid in guidance and there are lots of little rest stops (and dog kennels) to find along the way.
The map was already enormous but has now doubled in size, and it is possible to sail around the perimeter of the entire thing, bordered by even more remote shores. No white space inside the bounds. Added portals to connect the old lands to the new.
I must say that completing an epic voyage, next to emerging into daylight after a claustrophobic adventure of many days underground, is still one of the most satisfying moments in Minecraft. If you undertake this challenge I hope you will see what I mean.
I can't find a usable download link.

I wanted more than anything to play this map, to see this work and to experience pre-1.7.3 terrain, but I can't.
