Alpha 6 (the next release) is going to feature a brand new, never before seen texture pack!
Welcome to Alpha 5! A5 features some changes to old chambers as well as 2 brand new chambers! It makes use of checkpoints, the portal stand, turrets, and pistons. I took a long break from developing this map because I simply stopped feeling it, but I'm back and I plan on rolling out frequent updates. There's a catch, though - I need your help! Suggest rooms and puzzles in this thread, as well as possible improvements for old rooms. It'd be great if you could include a video or picture to better describe your concept. Of course, credit is given where credit is due! If I use your idea, you'll get three mentions. One in this thread, one in the map's readme (coming @ the final version), and one at the end of the map (again, final version).

Name change! This map was formerly called Korimito's Portal Map. In the interests of being more "hip" and "cool", I've changed it to "Subject 337", a play on the term "leet".
I would like to both apologize to and thank everyone who has had to deal with Alpha 4.1 or 4.2 being broken. I appreciate your patience and your reporting bugs, and I hope you continue to support this map as it grows and becomes better.
Alpha 4.3 includes one new High Energy Pellet introduction chamber, one new High Energy Pellet puzzle, and a bit of changed dialogue. Also, a much needed atmospheric change; All floors and ceilings are now made of double slabs, rather than dirt. This results in much more industrial sounding steps, and a better feel to the map overall. As part of an optional test protocol, we are pleased to inform you that changing dirt to slabs involved switching 1.8 million blocks. Woah.

The map isn't completely true to the original portal, though there are some chambers that have similar design to those in Portal, or even The Flash Version. I decided to not parallel Portal partly because of the lack of portal game mechanics available in Minecraft, and partly because I wanted to do my own thing.
I've tried my best to let the player practice new concepts before introducing them in a challenge, as portals can be quite finicky. I hope I've done a good job at making the techniques used in the chambers newb friendly. That being said, "easy" isn't necessarily what I'm going for. I don't want artificial difficulty. Challenges like mazes and luck-based puzzles don't take any skill; They take persistence. I want test subjects to learn how to use portals, and physics, and their own reflexes, to solve puzzles, not turn left and right until they find an exit. That's kinda hard to do when you're as limited as I am. I don't have compact redstone, or energy balls, or force fields that reset portals; All I have is gravity and momentum. If you have any clever ideas for puzzles, feel free to post them here. I'll give you full credit, both in this thread, and in the map as an easter egg.
Please do not mirror any version of this map. If there's a problem with a download link, I'll sort it out. Mirrors of this map are not allowed and will be dealt with forcefully if necessary. Check the license if you want to know what you're allowed to do.

I'm about two hours away from my PC and I have been for the past four days. When I get back tomorrow night I'll see if I can get enough work done for a release. I want nine, maybe ten chambers before I let this free to see what people think about it. Chamber eight is in progress. Previews will come tomorrow evening. I expect a release by mid-next-week.
Oh, and iChun, I found that portals used to have problems being placed when you're too close to the surface you're placing them on. In v3 and v4 you almost eliminated that problem for me! I'll make sure to toss those knee replacements in a chest at the beginning of the dungeon.

I'm using lava in some chambers right now. That'd kill the player and I'd need to resupply them with the items. Though I guess they could just restart the map. Can you place portals "in" water?

Just finished. Took me around 10-20 minutes, I'm not sure. The hard parts that stumbled me were the ones where you had to fall through the same portal twice to build up speed.
I've counted at least 10 by now.

yeah i wasn't exactly going for the original because i knew everyone else would still be doing it. so i thought it would be boss to make new ones...have a try on my map, not finished but it is original...at least im pretty sure it is!
Really liking it so far. Only suggestion I have is move the spawn if you can. Kind of tedious having to get a fresh copy of the world. Can't wait for more.

No problem. I'll do that now and post a minor update. Until I figure out a clever way to give players their portal guns and leg braces back, I'm not going to be moving the spawn.
