Hi,
I was discussing Photoshop templates for the terrain.png file with some other users today and someone asked me to upload the ones I created. You can open these in Photoshop, obviously and you'll get the benefit of layer groups and other features, but they can also be used in Gimp or Paint.net. To open them in Paint.net you'll need to install a free PSD plug-in. It's available here.
There are four templates. One each for 16, 32, 64 and 128 pixel tiles. I have been using the 128 pixel template to build Sanguine texture pack and have generated the other resolutions from that template. I have not used the 16, 32 or 64 pixel files yet so let me know if you encounter any issues with them.
[*:djp3ldzm]Each template file has an individual layer for each block ( doors, large chest are on one layer not two ).
[*:djp3ldzm]Each layer has an unlinked layer mask that clips the image content precisely to the appropriate area.
[*:djp3ldzm]The blocks are foldered by row to reduce layer management issues.
[*:djp3ldzm]There are also labels for each block, each on it's own layer. I did not take the time to change the fonts on these to a more legible font on the smaller template files but they are text layers and you can edit them if you'd like.
[*:djp3ldzm]The original texture is included on a separate layer and most of the blocks with transparency have been masked off on this layer. The mask is off by default.
[*:djp3ldzm]Three additional texture layers are provided for development / testing.
Averaged original texture. This texture allows you to compare your textures to the average tone of the original textures.
Gray texture. Useful to isolate your textures in game from the original textures.
White texture. Same as gray, but white.
[*:djp3ldzm]There are white and black background layers for testing alpha masks against.
I have added a similarly prepareed template for the items.png file. Only the 16 pixel resolution version.

[*:djp3ldzm]The items are foldered by row to reduce layer management issues.
[*:djp3ldzm]Each layer has an unlinked layer mask that clips the image content precisely to the appropriate area.
[*:djp3ldzm]This template file has two folders of the row folders; each of which contains an individual layer for each item.
[*:djp3ldzm]Folder 'Square Masks' has square masks 16x16.
[*:djp3ldzm]Folder 'Original Item Shaped Masks' has masks that conform to the original items outlines. Useful if you plan to create color variations of the original items.

Change log:
v.1.3
Corrected missing obsidian layer. Thank you ptbotwo!
v.1.2
Updated base textures for Minecraft version 1_2_1_01 content.
Corrected some mis-alligned guides
added label stroke to improve legibility
added labels, tile layers and masks for new content.
moved to zip formated psd files for download for enormous bandwidth saving.
v.1.1
Added 16 pixel items template.
I hope these prove useful to someone and that they save you a bit of time so that you can produce even more great texture packs!
Thanks,
copperdomebodha
If you like these templates Check out Sanguine my texture pack created using these templates.
As I need those template files for my own texture changes I'm first making a template file then using it. That way I don't have to go back and clean them up. I may just run through making all the templates first rather than just as I need them.
I'll add them to the OP as I finish them. Items will be up first.
Could you explain what it's doing? Personally I find I frequently curse PSCS and then find that I have, in fact, screwed up. It's a ton of layers and a ton of masks and easy to mis-select. But if there's any issues with the structure of the template I'd like to resolve it.
Hello, this is my first attempt at skinning a game.
I completed 5 squares of my custom skin and then i decided to test it out. not 100% sure on what I'm doing i saved it as a .png with the file name terrain and put it in the minecraft.jar.
when i went to play minecraft the screen went black.

what else am i meant to do to make my skin work?
Are you using a resolution higher than 512 x 512? If so, you'll need the HD texture fix.
Also you might want to add that one of those purple squares = long range texture transition. Ware and flat surfaces turn purple in the distance if you don't remove all that purple..
I have the HD texture pack already and i'm using the 128 pixel terrain template.
I also tried to install copperdomebodhas Texture pack (Sanguine textures) and that did the same thing.
I have installed several other texture packs and none of them have done this before.
Additional information:
-The screen goes black after the log on screen.
- I put interlace on.
- I left the background showing.
- The purple is still there.
- The text on the blocks wasn't supported for some reason.
@AzaIndustries, were you saying that i have to get rid of the purple?

Not you specifically I was just saying if people don't want to see that purple in the distance they should make it transparent.

Other then that good work.
That is very interesting Aza. I have never seen that effect and I can't reproduce it right now using this template or with Sanguine. I am running the pre-update client however. Are you seeing this in the Boo update only or did this occur before the update too?
I don't believe that this is caused by the unused ( I believe ) tiles being used for a haze or long range texture transition. The newly updated terrain.png file contains the exact color purple in every unused tile.

Edit: I apologize I see that you are saving the template as a png file. I'm afraid that I don't have a solution to offer you. I am awaiting a proper and complete patch for HD textures before moving to the new client. This crash may be caused by a failure to properly patch the client. Which version of the HD texture patcher are you using? There is a interim version available. Version 1.1.7. Have you tried using that patcher?
Are you saving the template as a png?
You must save the template as a png ( Portable Network Graphic ) format file before placing it in the minecraft.jar. Minecraft cannot parse a photoshop formated file. The fact that the text was not supported suggests to me that you are editing this in another application. Just "save as" and select the PNG format and your terrain file should work.

Could you explain what you mean by "Ware"?
Hmm odd that I see it because I'm only using the HD fix and a simple texture pack.
Me saying "ware" was just me attempting to say water.... yeh don't mind me I'm retarded.
As long as no one else gets that glitch then its all good! I know how to fix it on my PC so its not a problem.
It happened in both post and pre-update.

Well i had the 1.1.6 version, so i downloaded the 1.1.7 and ran that. it came up with a message saying my bin is corrupt. so I'm guessing that's my problem.
Working :smile.gif:, for some reason the 1.1.7 HD texture patcher wasn't working but after reinstalling and using the 1.1.6 HD texture patcher it worked fine.
