Many people count spaces inbetween torches, others just place them at random. Both these methods either end up wasting torches and still having mobs spawn, or not have mobs spawn yet have them to close together. So here is an easy way to space torches as far apart as possible without wasting any torch's. Just keep walking until you find the darkest block, that should be light level 0. Go back 1 block, this should be light level 1, and place another torch. This saves torches while keeping good distance between them. Look farther ahead so you know where to place them early so you don't have to go back. I have used this method for some time, and felt like sharing it just now.

If you earn one, you can not give it away.
It would take me more time to follow your advice than to just make more torches. I have 300+ coal and 700+ wood blocks (which I can also make charcoal with) in my save; it's not like I need to count how many I place.
You don't get what I am saying.
Just keep going in the cave system till you see the darkest level of block, then place a torch right before it.

QFT.
It's not like torches are hard to make or require rare ressources anyway…
Good point, but hey, its still a way to save coal.
