Here's a project I've been working on in my one-and-only world. I've decided to expand it into a town called sandlake. At the moment, there's only a castle, tower and this cathedral, but I think I'll work on some smaller things next..
Anyway, this was done 99% legit. I INVedited in most of the glowstone though, cause frankly, after spending hours in the nether and falling into lava multiple times to gain 1/9 of the glowstone I actually destroyed there, and coming back and having it lag and place 3 blocks instead of 1, it got a bit tiring... But all the normal stone, cobblestone, wood, netherrack etc. was mined legit.
I did do a little bit of research about cathedrals, and tried to make the layout kind of realistic, but most of it was just made up. I used minecraft structure planner for the floor plan, and planning a few other things like arches and roofs.
Here are some exterior pics: (Texture pack is a customised Painterly Pack, by the way.)
As you can see the outside is all made of smooth stone and glass, with a netherrack roof.
Here's the view from my other buildings:
I also had to landscape the area a bit, because after I'd flattened out the space there were a lot of sheer flat cliffs. So if the hills around it look a bit blocky, that's why.
The main entrance:
All in half-blocks, which look pretty cool in the Painterly Pack. Those fires have turned into a bit of a mob trap though, haha. I'm always finding leather, pork and feathers around them...
Now for some interior pics:
Lighting is all by glowstone with fences and torches as decoration.
The floor is a checkerboard pattern of Obsidian and stone slab (I didn't mine the obsidian, I just cast it using lava and water), and there's a red wool "Carpet". The design in the middle is black wool, orange wool and glowstone.
Obviously, the "pews" are just wooden stairs. I decided they'd probably look better without signs on the sides.
All vaulted ceilings, of course. I made little "vent" things up in the roofs using stone slabs. There was supposed to be a pretty impressive spire there too, but it ended up being barely noticeable because I reached the height limit.
There are two rooms either side of the pews, and I haven't got the faintest clue what they could be used for, I really just put them there because they look cool.
Above each of the pointless rooms is an equally-pointless attic room, which leads to the balconies.
On the far end of the cathedral, there are two 3-storey tower-things:
Also, when I built it I ended up with quite a substantial space underneath, because of how high the stairs were. Anyway I made a "basement" with a nice storage facility (2 rooms, with 3 levels. Each level has 2 double chests, 2 workbenches and 4 furnaces.) and a lot of other rooms, which I haven't found a use for:
I think that covers most of it.. I'm pretty happy with it considering I only started playing Minecraft just after Beta came out, and this is on my first world. The only think is I think the outside might be a bit boring/bland, but I can't be stuffed fixing it haha. I've had enough of mega-builds for now, I'm going to make some little brick houses..
But anyway, thoughts, suggestions, comments? :biggrin.gif: I'd make a video except my framerate is awful at the best of times (I changed the fog for the screenshots, but normally I play on tiny) and I don't think trying to record it would end well. Also I have incredibly slow internet.
Awesome. Great architectual design, and I was delighted to see someone who made their 'cathedral' look like a real church, unlike some of the pillared monstrosities I have seen.
I was surprised when when you said you reached the height limit, though, I always thought it was higher than that.
@Yohosh: I INVedited in most of the glowstone, but everything else was legit.
@Superzac: Yeah, although I think it's about 5 blocks above sea level so that would make a little difference. I probably should have started it a bit below sea level.
Very beautiful cathedral! I've been making remaking Iona Abbey (http://www.puredivinelove.com/images/Io ... ey%202.jpg) and what you've done has gotten my spirits up a bit, the abbey is up but it needs decorations and interior stuff which I've been putting off as I'm a little sick of the project.
congrats thats an exelent cathedral youve got there. ive been meaning to make one myself and then put in the catacombs my nether portal heres a for you
Wow, I haven't come on here in a while.. Here's the save:
There are a few other smaller buildings and houses and things that I've done since then as well. If you walk around the road that goes around the lake you should find them all. http://rapidshare.com/files/450883374/World1.zip

Did you use any inventory edits?
Even if you did, this is still an extremely impressive piece of work. I hope to see more from you in the future!

You heard that, green and red.
Keep up the good work!
I'm asking you, as a friend... Just...put an end to me.
I've got plenty here in my banana bag.
A save file would be good.

I was looking for churches and cathedrals, since I built my first yesterday. Have to say this is fantastic!
