In honor of the Survival Island Challenge that Yogscast recently played, I decided to make a version of that where you're started underground with very few materials and forced to survive down there. I also covered the top of the map with bedrock so you couldn't escape. This is my first map, and I'm excited to see what you guys think!
-------
A long time ago, there was a great miner who found all the world's greatest treasures. With the power of his magic adamantium pick, even the skeletons and zombies of the land bowed to him.
As time went on, though, he grew old and tired, so he hid all his possessions throughout the caves deep underground for the next great miners to find. Unfortunately though, after the miner died, the evil Herobrine, his arch-nemesis, broke free into the world from the nether in which he was sealed long ago, bringing new and powerful monsters to rule. He threw the adamantium pick into a pool of lava, and it instantly burned up (don't ask how, it just does that).
You daringly went to the obsidian palace in the nether to defeat Herobrine, but your weak stone equipment and leather armor wasn't enough, and he easily beat you. He banished you into a cave far beneath the earth, and sealed off the surface with bedrock. Herobrine has left a series of challenges you must complete in order to get out of your prison, and that is what you aim to do.
Challenges-
Make a redstone contraption that uses at least 10 different redstone torches.
Make a cactus that goes all the way from bedrock to the top of the map.
Make 5 bookshelves.
Make a full set of diamond armor and a diamond sword to fight herobrine.
Find all 4 fabled treasure rooms that the last miner left.
Complete the hidden bonus challenge Herobrine left you!
HOW TO GROW A TREE.
(for the people having trouble starting off)
So, in the chest there's a sapling, right?
And do you see the dirt right over there? Except there aren't any torches to light it...
So try using the lava to light the sapling!
See, with the wood from the tree, you can make tools to go actually mine for stuff, and maybe even get more saplings!
Quote from Doutri »
About growing trees- thanks to information taken from the Tree Growth thread we now have a good idea about how to grow a tree as quickly as possible along with what can cause some saplings to take much longer. Long story short, if a sapling is planted in the bottom center of a 5x5x8 cube of empty space it should grow the first time its algorithm is called upon. If it doesn't have enough space then the sapling will probably take a long time to grow, or may never grow at all. When planting the sapling, make sure it's not so close to the lava that it ignites and also make sure it has the required space.
I would also advise filling up those few lava blocks next to the grass if you don't want it to burn. I only put them there as lighting so mobs wouldn't spawn right at the spawn point.
----
HARD-
Started with one sapling, one cactus, and one sugar cane.
EASY-
Like hard, but you also get two logs in the starting chest.
----
UPDATE HISTORY:
1/12/11 (0.1)- Removed several diamonds and other ores near spawn and the logs from the chest in order to increase the starting difficulty.
1/13/11 (0.2)- Added two new items to starting chest, a mysterious dark tunnel for mobs to spawn in, and something else! Also started on a backstory.
1/14/11 (0.3)- Added two more secret treasure rooms with some valuable materials. Also finished backstory and made a few challenges.
1/17/11 (0.4)- Added a grass block, another treasure, and the first hidden bonus challenge!
1/19/11 (0.5)- Water spring replaced with ice cave, added easy/hard difficulties.
A good start, but it is far too easy. After about 10 minutes, my tree farm was ready and I had a diamond pickaxe. Try to make all the ores well hidden or in dangerous areas. As Notch says, I'd rather it be too hard than too easy.

Thanks for your advice! I'm already working on increasing the challenge...
Maybe slightly different maps for different difficulties?
Tch...I was thinking about making a Survival Island as well, because Ashiens survival islands were so epic, but then I wanted to try making something different like and underground survival...but I see that you already have one. I also had the idea of boxing the underground survival with bedrock. I'll try it, looks awesome.
Great treasure in the Last Miner's chests! Though I kinda wish he had left clues of some sort. You either need extreme luck or the ability to see through walls to find them. Putting some grass and ice blocks somewhere would be awesome btw.
I hope you continue to add things to this scenario! Maybe journal pages from the Last Miner during his last days.
Is it possible to find Herobrine's obsidian palace?
PS- when first loading the save no monsters seem to spawn outside of dungeons as though it were on peaceful. I have to change difficulties away and back to normal to get them to appear. Not sure why that is- are you at peaceful when you save the world for upload?
i don't know, this kinda sucks. I can't find anything. There's the chest, but it only had a sapling, a cactus, and a reed. there's the water, but i couldn't see a damned thing over there. There's no dirt besides over lava, but it would be pointless cause I don't see any coal.
Edit: PM me when you reply, cause i'm going to bed. it's 9:15 pm

Okay, replying to this bit by bit.
1: I've been thinking of better ways to clue towards the chests. Any suggestions about that would be nice. :biggrin.gif:
2: The next update will definitely have a grass block in it! Not so sure about the usefulness of placing ice, though...
3: I'm probably going to keep working on this until there's like 10 chests or so to find.
4: This is why I'm really hoping you'll be able to write stuff in books/ bookcases soon.
5: Nah, it's supposed to be in the Nether :biggrin.gif:
I may consider making a sequel with it, though...
6: Yeah, that might be the problem. I'll look into it when I start on the next update.
I started playing this last night and got virtually no where. I started breaking stone with my fist and made a nice little tunnel through some lava pool that sent me back to the spawn cave. I rage quit and went to bed. Too hard imo, should at least give us a wooden pick or something to start with.
But I really do enjoy these survival challenges. Keep it up.

I originally started people with a lot of materials, but everyone said it was way too easy, so I just put a few plants in the chest. There's even dirt there now.
I'm putting a little tutorial up so people like you will know what to do and enjoy it more. :biggrin.gif:

RE: Onion
1- Arrows pointing in the direction or even signs listing coordinates (found with F3) could point the player to the start of the cave/dungeon which contains the treasure somewhere within. Man-made materials (planks, cobblestone etc) are also great for getting attention for fake walls etc.
2- Grass and ice blocks would help in terraforming a nether base should you ever add a quest to the Obsidian palace. =) Ice provides water for irrigation while grass allows for seeds and the spawning of surface animals.

Wow, this was really helpful!
I think I'll put this up with the how to grow a tree section.
Also, there's a nearby infinite water spring that people can use for crops, but an ice cave would look a lot more pretty. :3
And coordinates might be cool. It's like geocaching!
I found a Herobrine bonus challange in a cave. (only hint- it's slightly above the major lava lake that is NOT blocked off by cobble at the beginning.
Edit: did you find this area naturally in a cave? there's lava ****ing EVERYWHERE
Sorry about that Onion, i fixed it. Also, if you want to hint ways to the chests, you should provide riddles on signs.
Example: while exploring a cave, you find a sign that says: Under the creator, in a room weathered by time.
The answer: Under a mob spawner, most likely in the same cave, so many blocks under it is the chest room. the weathered by time room is obviously a dungeon
Now with a prettier screenshot!

I'll make sure to do something like that! Maybe a cactus, too...
