I tried searching but didn't see anything come up in this forum. I can play single player fine but whenever I try joining a multiplayer server I always crash after a minute or two with this error. Anyone have any ideas? Here's the full crash report.

Unfortunately as of yet there is no known solution, if you're also getting other errors they may be causing this, so look up the others errors if you have them. If not, you're going to have to do exactly what I'm doing (have the same error), wait for Notch to fix it.

That's a bummer. Like I said I've never had the game crash on me before until I tried playing multiplayer :/
i too am having the same error when playing in smp:

I got a NullPointerException yesterday morning while messing around with the options menu. Hopefully, it should be rather easy to fix since I'm assuming there aren't that many functions that set a perimeter to null after the java starts up.
We (and anyone who connects) is experiencing this issue on our server as well (SMP).
Shortening the view distance helps. I am convinced the problem is that there is a block that is crashing the client. On our server it is somewhere near the spawn point. I try to mark it but....as it's near the spawn point - I can't place anything in super close prximity to it.
The strange thing is. The 'no-build' zone is not actually near the '/home'/ maybe '/home' and the spawn are different.
My plan is to try and find the approximate area in MCedit and replace the general area with temp blocks and see if that fixes it.
I don't think this issue is getting enough attention.
On a side note (having the same problem from 3 different computers trying to log in to my private server), this is what the server spits to the console:
04:05:45 /IP.ADD.RES.S connected
04:05:50 Kicking /IP.ADD.RES.S: You need to log in!
04:05:50 /IP.ADD.RES.S disconnected
This comes up for every user that tries to login. Apparently, once I let my server go online and had set it to public, 3 users managed to get in (unknown and unrelated to me). The weird thing is we're all logged in… :\

Hope this helps solved the issue.
Cheers.
