I have used the search feature but didn't find what I was looking for. I am curious, do nether portals work yet in SMP? Or just SP. I know they didn't a while back but there have been many updates since then and I have been out of the loop. Thank you for your time.

Actually wait, that still doesn't help me, I've looked all over the modding forum for anything called "essentials" and I haven't found anything. Could you link it?

So what is bukkit? what is essentials? How do I get my server so that nether portals work? I'm on the bukkit site and I'm still quite confused. Sorry :/

Basically they've created a framework that makes it very easy for developers to control the minecraft experience. In the middle of their framework is Mojang's Minecraft server. A Bukkit server runs a Craftbukkit jarfile instead of the Minecraft_server jarfile.
AFAIK, bukkit is the ONLY way to experience multi-world in SMP.
I'm really interested in a fix so the nether works just as in ssp, and I've checked out the documentation and similar threads, but I am unable to satisfy my curiosity:
Will this essentials plugin deliver the true nether, working with portals, just as it would in SSP? And can I get ONLY the real nether, nothing else? I understand parts of the plugin can be installed...?
I don't want anyone, myself as server admin included, to be able to use the /world command to teleport to other worlds or anything "cheaty" like that. We're playing hardcore vanilla without "cheats", but we're missing the nether, and that's all we need. And if this is possible, is there a catch? Such as vastly increased server load, bugs, bad functionality etc?

There are a number of Bukkit plugins that allow you to establish Nether portals. NetherGate and Nether 1.1 are the most basic and probably closer what you're looking for.

But is it the one and only true nether?
The most important thing for us is by far, that it is the actual, genuine nether coded by notch. The very same nether you can experience in ssp and not just some mock-up, however great it is. Does it exist to be activated easily in smp today?
It's not hellword if that's what you mean. I honestly don't know if the Bukkit team "exposed" Notch's Nether through their API, or if they actually coded any of it themselves, but I honestly can't tell a difference. The only thing unusual are the high spawn rates for Ghasts, and the fact that their fireballs are invisible. Both are bugs to my understanding, so I have them disabled on my server via a plugin (bMobs).

I know that the world is the same. I have actually used an old SSP nether map in SMP. However, even though the map is the same, the experience will not be 100% SSP because of technical issues. For example, currently when you login to a world the client receives info from the server to tell the client if you are entering a normal or hell world. That data only gets sent when you log in. So when you connect to a normal world then teleport to a hellworld, your client still thinks that you are in a normal world so it does things like paint a blue sky. You still get all the netherrack, lava, & zombie pigmen... but under a dull blue sky.

Do you think relogging after portaling to the nether would work?
NathanWolf warned me to not get attached to my portal locations in his NetherGate netherworld as they move, so though NathanWolf is awesome and active with the work on his plugins, that's sort of a dealbreaker for our server untill he fixes that issue.
Does the essentials plugin or Nether 1.1. have this problem? Are there any other good alternatives? Essentials' problems with ghasts isn't quite as much a dealbreaker, I think, because at least we can "conquer" and build in the nether, gather our resources, and come back to the same spot some other day for more, right?

Thank you for your replies so far! :smile.gif:
I read your suggestion and quickly tested it on a local server. I documented my steps in the NG thread on bukkit.org, but the bottom line is that you still get a blue sky if you log directly into a nether world. Evidently the server is still sending the worldtype of the default world to the client on login.
Regarding location in the nether, I have made a shelter around my spawn point in my nether, and I reliably land there when I portal in... although once I completely enclosed it, I started landing on the roof! So when you build, make stairs! I am not worrying about things 'shifting' with changes to NG, since I know that I can either re-locate the spawn or (when linked portals are working) create a new set of portals to get me to my desired destination. The trip to re-find my shelter may be a bit challenging... but that is what makes things interesting! (If you do have to re-find your shelter, I'd advise checking out NathanWolfe's Spells & Wands plugins. "Blink" can make nether travel much easier. I use it for admin/testing)

Hey, Greylocke- do you know more about this? Do you think you could PM me here or on the bukkit forums (preferably bukkit, if you're signed up there, honestly...)
I've got a NetherGate plugin over there, and I would _love_ to make a red sky, even if it only worked if the player logged into the nether.

Heh- oops, should have kept reading, and also put 2+2 together and realized you're the same Greylocke :tongue.gif:
Need to read names more.
Anyway.... this is something I would like to look into. If we could get bukkit to set the right worldtype on login (it does know the world the player is "heading" to, at least at some point in that process...) then maybe red skies are possible without further support from Mojang...
At least, hacky red skies that my users will ask about ... "why does it work sometimes and not others?" I can see it now.... :smile.gif:

Ok, I feel like my ears should've been burning :smile.gif: Couple more comments.
Greylocke, I feel the same way. If you're not trying to set up a complex portal network (don't do that yet! At least not with NetherGate...) then portalling to/from spawn is the best way to get some nether love in SMP right now.
Once portal tracking is working, I'll turn on fast travel and you can start networking on hubbing and fast travelling and all that awesome stuff.
For now, though- Greylocke is more or less right on. The only thing I will point out is that no amount of re-centering is going to get a 1:1 portal network to align up with a 1:8 network. So, once fast travel is turned on it'll be very hard to "line up" that network- you'd have to pair each portal by hand, basically (which will be possible...)
Hope that makes sense :smile.gif:
And yes, blink is _invaluable_ in nether exploration- almost as much so as a good dynmap setup. :biggrin.gif:
Also, recurse/fill are great for creating bridges across lava quickly, arrow is great for fighting ghasts, torch is cool in the nether (changes netherrak to glowstone), etc- as long as I'm here plugging Spells and all :smile.gif:
Oh yes, blink is awesome, and I'm sure fast travel and all that good jazz is too, but we're very stubborn about not having anything "cheaty" on our server, so if NetherGate starts looking like Wormhole xtreme (portal to any portal of your choice as long as it's set up with a name), we would consider it hacking and not use it.
I realize that with the 1:8 ratio you COULD travel further by going via the nether, but that's how it works in ssp, so that's ok, though. :smile.gif:

No, no no!
NetherGate will _always_ be the single player experience (or as close as I can make it....) by default.
The admin commands and other configuration options can be used to totally change this experience- but as a drop-in plugin, my goal is to bring nether portals to SMP as faithfully as I can.
There are already WHX, ServerPort, and Stargate plugins for Bukkit (not to mention a zillion other nether/multi-world plugins, probably farther along at this point then NG...)
I want the single player experience, that's why I started NG and that's my goal. I really don't have time or need to re-invent the wheel, if I wanted one of those other plugins I'd have saved myself the trouble and just used them :biggrin.gif:
I'm glad so many people are as passionate about this as I am- it just goes to show how great the core MC features are, and how badly we miss them when any are "missing" in SMP!
I wish I had more time lately to get it working properly... my old portal hub network is just sitting there in my world, waiting to get "hooked back up"!
(This, by the way, is the "litmus test" for NG 1.0 - once it can seamlessly re-activate my old SSP portal network, I'll be satisfied to call it "done for now")
Using the Essentials plugin, you can now get the nether.
