Environment: The Nether AI: Hostile Drop: Soul Dust Misc: The Glutton is a savage senseless beast that roams the Nether, it frequents large soul-sand beds and consumes the vaporous wisps of souls that occasionally escape the soul-sand (I also want to create these harmless mist-esque wisps that appear over soul-sand deposits and create a kind of foggy, bog-like feel to areas with lots of the stuff). If you get to close to one of the Gluttons, it will smell the soul inside you and attack to get at it.
Relatively weak, Gluttons aren't much of an issue one on one, even though they can move through soul-sand with no difficulty. It's only when you meet a group of them that you have trouble.
A sort of dual suggestion, mining soul-sand would occasionally produce soul-dust much like gravel occasionally produces flint. Soul-dust could be useful in future alchemy systems and I have some ideas for a mob that I'll try to release next. The danger to mining this soul dust is that the more you have on your person, the farther a Glutton can sense you from and the more you will be confronted with fighting.
The Gluttons are somewhat dog-like in movement and behavior. It could be really cool if Zombie Pigmen occasionally had them as pets.
Since the Gluttons gorge themselves on souls, when you kill one, you could collect zero to two soul dusts, much like other drops.

Also, sorry it's been a while since I've posted. New job is great, but it sure sucks away my time and energy!
I love it. I also imagine the soul dust being purple in color. Not all that big on them being zombiepigmen pets, but as long as it looks this awesome, i'm fine with anything!
Amazing, just an amazing mob, all of yours are so perfect, but this is just awesome, and makes the nether more interesting (I haven't actually gotten there legit yet, but I have 8 obsidian and plenty left to mine, but the mobs scare the **** out of me whenever I go down). Still, awesome mob, really fits the theme, and makes the nether awesome.

I have decided to have a bottomless spoiler as well, and am not the first but mine is bottomless (kinda).

I would like to start by saying that I joined the forums specifically so I could comment on this! I've been lurking for awhile now, and I have to say I absolutely love every single one of your ideas (Especially the tortoise and this one). I would love to see this implemented!
That could work really well... It would involve making the soul dust into a snowball like object, but that could have other implications. My mind is abuzz!
Man, where was I when you posted this!? Once again, you've posted a great mob suggestion, and like qwertyz said, this should make the nether more interesting. Keep up the great work!
I'm not sure which thread came first, but these seem a lot like "famine" that someone suggested in a "make the nether scarier" thread. I like the idea, though
I love how it looks, but what the hell is soul dust? Are we talking something that is similar to slow sand? Lightstone dust, or something entirely different?
Personally, I think the soul thing is just too ambiguous. It's called the glutton, so just make it attack whenever you're carrying food. Each time it "attacks" you, it does either no damage, or only .5 to 1 HP, but it'll also steal one piece of food from you at the same time.
For food it will steal Fish, Eggs, Mushroom soup, Grilled meat, Bread, Meat, and mushrooms (both kinds) in that order. Yes, Fish and Eggs currently don't heal anything, but that lets them protect your actual healing items by carrying some.
I know, i did already. I'm still not too keen on the soul sand/dust idea. I just see it as one more thing that the game needs to change to accommodate the idea, rather than the idea meshing with the game.

One question:
What do you use for making your mobs skin?
big time very well thought out and no changes should be made at all i love this mopletely.
I might draw a picture to explain what I mean
This would be an awesome thing for the Nether, and would give an excuse for there to be more Slow Sand around.
I seriously hope Notch looks at and considers your ideas, they've all seemed really cool to me.
