Or to be more specific boats or perhaps wagons, in which we could transport people and materials?
Cause lets be brutally honest here, swimming across the ocean, while beautiful, is terribly boring and uneventful.
Anyone who has played /infdev/ should know.
Now, I know boats and Wagons are probably hard to program into Minecraft, and it may cause a lot of issues, but it has to be done not only cause it would help players expand their areas; but it would add a sense of challenge and a unsatisfiable urge to explore.
Also it would implement cunning and smart thinking from some players, as they could hide these supplies for when enemy groups get the jump on them and destroy most their more well known supplies.
Now for the specs of what I am thinking:
Note: A unit = 1 small box/container or 1 player/human
Boats:
* In order to construct you have to make Four parts of a boat; the Front and the Back of the main body, and a Sail and Sail Post.
* The first two parts are the boats body and can be made from wood, gold, and Iron.
* The Sail is made from wool.
* Sail post made of the same material as the boats body. (So a iron boat would require a iron sail post)
* Each boat requires 1 human to move it, except for gold which requires 2 people to move it, though only one person steers the gold boat.
* A human controlling the boat is considered one unit on the boat, so they take up 1 unit space.
* Wood Boats would be considerably faster but lack allot room for passenger and supplies. (3 times faster than swimming and can hold 3 units. 6 hits from an arrow to destroy)
* Iron Boats are big but quite slow. (Only /1.5 faster than normal swimming but 6 units for storage. 16 hits from an arrow to destroy)
* Gold Boats are Huge but Unbearably slow and fragile. (1/2 the speed of normal swimming. It can hold a whopping 9 units. 4 hits from an arrow to destroy.)
* A boats health can be indicated by smoke. (think legend of zelda spirit tracks sort of)
* If a boat is destroyed there is a small chance you can recover pieces from the debris. (Like the sail, sail post, or even a body part)
* All supplies on a boat go flying if destroyed. (Including humans)
I know this idea still needs a lot of work but that's why I'm bringing the idea here.
I am still thinking about how it should be built on the construction grid.
Also the gold boat is still useful, though only if an enemy group (On multiplayer) isn't chasing you across a sea.
Lastly, I am also thinking that other human units on a boat can act as covering fire for the boat, provided they have a bow and arrows though.
Wagons:
* Wagons are tedious to create as they require 4 wheels, a canopy for the top, and a wooden frame/body.
* The benefit from this though is that you can move large supplies across large lands with relative ease... as long as you guard them from danger of course... and have some considerably flat land.
* They could also be used for a storage for emergency supplies.
* Wagon Wheels can be made from wood, the wheels and body of a wagon can mismatch.
* A canopy is made of wool.
* The easiest wagon body to make is a wooden one and moves at a normal walking pace but at the cost of endurance.
* Iron Wagons are difficult to make and move at 1/2 the normal pace but have a higher endurance.
* A wagon requires one person to pull.
* A wagon can have people in it to act like defense for the wagon, provided they have bows and arrows.
*They can go up steps but not hills so have some people make a flat path for it.
*each one can hold up to 5 units.
* They are 3x4 squares huge so they can fit through tunnels if needed.
*If destroyed items are slightly scattered and wagon controller is hurt by 3 hearts.
* some parts may be recovered if destroyed.
- Wagons might be flammable.
- Wagons might make monster attraction more common.
- Wagons sink like rocks and water and all possessions to it are lost and no parts can be salvaged.
Alright now Wagons are interesting tool, I know people can carry stuff but lets face it, they can only carry so much and Wagons can make for a emergency storage or supply get away vehicle if needed.
Since wagons can be moved up steps one could store them underground, out of sight of enemies, and use them to transport large supplies.
An example would be like, "Enemies destroy a large chunk of your fort and gathering resources to repair it properly would be cumbersome and risky; and leaving it alone would leave you exposed to monster attacks" A wagon could hold these materials and prevent the the tedious work of moving back and forth between boxes and containers.
UPDATE:
After much thinking and realization I've decided Iron and Gold boats can cross Lava based sea's and lakes (For those who are going to get involved in Hell mode survival in Multiplayer). If one tries to deploy a wooden boat into Lava it will instantly light up and become useless, and sadly all parts to the ship will be forfeit as well.
Next, I've decided that an Iron boat can be upgraded to have a Cannon, but ONLY the Iron Boat.
Now this could be a game breaker sadly so I am only throwing it out there like an idea.
What a cannon can do is be used for sea based warfare with rival groups, dealing 3 cannonballs to any metal ship results in it's instant demise, while only 1 is required for wooden boats.
A Cannon is consists of 2 parts The Cannon, and the Base.
The cannon is made from Iron and the base from wood.
Cannon balls however are very costly to make as they require 2-3 gunpowder's and 1 iron bar. (Though for laughs I guess you could use gold bars for a replacement to Iron and make Gold Cannonballs).
Cannon's would work like arrows except they have a faster fall rate and have a longer delay. Some where between 5-10 seconds per shot sounds right. Also a Cannon would take up TWO units on an Iron Boat. (One being for the cannon the other for the human controller to the cannon)
Cannonballs themselves explode upon contact with anything though they only have a 1/4 the explosive power of a T.N.T. box.
Finally, if a Boat that has a Cannon is destroyed the Cannon part of the Cannon can survive and may be retrievable... in fact if some one where able to have the supplies they could probably install one on their ship during the heat of battle... of course they would have to retrieve it from the bottom of the sea.
*UPDATE
Apparently where going to get oxes and Cows and other animals so I guess I should make an update to both of these vehicles.
Alright first the Wagon.
If Notch does implement's animals and IF you can train them to pull Wagons then the speed should be twice as fast as a normal walk. Though getiing over hills will still be hard to do. So a road crew to make a path will still be needed.
Secondly Animals, if we can actually move and herd animals then animals can be packed onto ships but heres the catch, only Iron and gold can support them.
An Ox, Cow, Pig, Sheep, and Horse will take up two units of storage on a vessel.
A chicken or some thing as small will take up on unit of storage.
Finally after some thinking and self debating I decided to make ONE add-on to a boat.
A Wagon Raft:
* Made out of wood and can only hold a single Wagon.
* Can Connect to any boat/Raft via Rope.
* If a Horse is connected to Wagon a Horse will stay with the Wagon on Raft.
* If a Raft is sunk with a Wagon on it, the wagon will sink to the bottom of the ocean and be unmovable and usable.
* If the Wagon Sinks the Horse died instantly.
* A Raft is sturdy and can take as many hits as a Wooden Boat.
* If the boat to the Raft is destroyed there will be a 50/50 chance the rope to the boat will snap.
* If the rope snaps it can be connected to another Boat or Raft.
* If the rope doesn't Snap it's sinks to the bottom and all items on raft are for forfeit.
* You can connect a Raft to a Raft Via Rope but the maximum chain of rafts is three.

Sounds awfully complex... If/when there is transportation it should be VERY rudimentary. Everything in the game so far has been very simple, and I foresee the hardcoded part of the game remaining that way.
I really don't get why everyone is freaking out about block storage on boats. Just carry the stuff you want. You can get new dirt elsewhere, or you can find new sand for glass.

we may get transportation such as boats or wagons. However what would be more likely is smaller transports such as mounts and canoes. As well your boat is ridiculously weak, 6 arrows? an unarmoured player could survive 6 arrows. This leads into the problem of armour, where things like arrows wouldn't harm the boat maybe it could hit the person and hurt them, but not the boat.

Fixed you're typo's and also yes, they are supposed to be weak.
Boats are for the sea and nothing more; to make them everlasting would be pointless and slightly overpowered. Since it would make the people in the boats invulnerable to damage.
Also I suspect they would deter sea monsters or at least make them neutral towards you.

NO WAY! Can you imagine sailing along, doing your thing, going to that distant land... And suddenly a leviathan sea serpent jumps over your ship, just missing you, crashing into the ocean to your left?! And then, if you actually, made it, how EPIC you'd feel?

How would the boat work? Could you walk around on it, place chests and other items? Or would it be like a mob? Maybe a combination of both? Because I would not be happy if the boat was not a block thing.

Okay here's how I see it going down.
First of all you can walk on it just like you would on land, It can bob up and down if Notch really wants it to but other than that no, it remains still on top of water.
Now there's probably going to have to be a way to station yourself into one of the three spots, so Notch might have to make a "use" command or something; or perhaps when you right click it you can get in, but in order to station yourself inside the boat you must be bare handed.
When you place items on it, the only thing than can go on it should be chests, but small chests not long ones. Also you can choose where to place yourself but in the long run it doesn't matter where you place stuff or people... though Ideally since one spot must be occupied by a human controller, the human (Or captain) should be stationed at the front of the boat.
Though I suppose is since the Gold Boat is probably going to be the weirdest thing to work with (Since it requires two people sitting to operate) perhaps it can be moved solely by the Main Human controller in a specific spot.
Lastly, Mobs I presume are those blocks you pick up right? If so, no. You cannot put that stuff in the boat, doing so will make the items bounce of the boat into the water (Or lava if you have a Iron/Gold Boat). If this where allowed an exploit could be easily created making the metal based boats nearly useless. By making small chests the only object place-able in the boat we can create an equal opportunity's for opposing groups and people, and we could see people making strategies to insure their goods get across a mass body of water safely and quickly.

Ah, if thats the case then yes, Animal controlled wagons should be much faster than walking pace.
Though if they where being dragged by a sole person then it should be slower.
Also woo, bigger template.
