Environment: Plains, or other dry flatlands. AI: Non-Hostile, potential to be tamed! Drop: Special: When attacked, the tortoise retreats into his shell. If then attacked with a weapon, damage is dealt very slowly until the turtle is killed. However, it is possible to "gather" the tortoise. Possibly by breaking the block with a non-weapon. Alternatively, damage could only apply when the turtle is out of his shell. Any strikes to his shell would go toward gathering the tortoise, regardless of tool. Misc: Spawns around flowers, shouldn't see more than one at a time. Two in the same place would be pretty rare.
Here's a neat little creature. The tortoise shell is actually a 16x16 block. The cool part about him, other than his dapper looks, is that you could place one of a few block-based items on his shell that he would carry along. It could be a chest or a workbench or a furnace. Then you make a path of flowers where you want him to go and he munches down on them and follows you. Potentially there could be a turtle whistle that would attract your little buddy.
Variant:Giant Tortoise
Environment: Plains, or other dry flatlands. AI: Non-Hostile, potential to be tamed! Drop: Meat, chunk of tortoise shell? Could be used for construction. Misc: Rare Spawn around flowers and areas with few trees, shouldn't see more than one at a time. Two in the same place would be impossible.
Bigger version of the tortoise. The theme of placing blocks on the shell is repeated but brought to a larger scale. This guy would have a limit to the range of the blocks that could be placed on him. Probably one outwards and up to four upwards. You could make a small shelter or a bunch of chests. I imagine this guy as a replacement for a manufactured covered wagon. I envision a caravan of a few of these guys surrounded by a handful of their little brothers trekking through the desert with a group of merchants.
Their collision hit box would be the max bounding area for the blocks, so it wouldn't be able to go into caves unless the opening were huge.
I'm sure opponents of the original tortoise will dislike this one even more, but I could not resist!
that is fantasic would love to see this in the game, but would he be fast or slow?

I like how Notch cares about peoples religions... then again, I guessed if he called the Hell-ish place 'America' it wouldn't do much justice either...
this would be very helpful if this is the first creature to cross through portals, then you could set a group of them up (if you can find enough) and use them as a transport system for moving certain materials.
would be epic if you could craft a turtle whistle out of the turtle shell to call turtle's: kill 1 turtle, but once you find another you can then tame that one

If Notch ever finds a nice way to get Moving Light to work, they'd be great to have wandering around with Lanterns on their backs, lol.
Or, if you want to be evil, place a Mob Spawner on his back, XD.
Signs would be funny, leave a message and send your Turtle off, it be like Snail mail except slightly faster. Portable Furnaces would still be great, a Jukebox would be hilarious to have around, and if we could figure out how the collision would work, place a Redstone Torch on his back and send him towards some Redstone to turn it on.
Skip the 10 minute to eat cabbage thing. Just have him eat flowers, and it only takes a few seconds, and he can't climb higher than 1 block. Then just have it so that he wont despawn when you're out of range. If you surround him with blocks 2 high, he'll retreat in his shell and just stay still. This allows for the strategy of having him carry a chest, blocking him in where you need him to start, then creating a trail of flowers for him to follow to where you want the chest moved with one flower inside a pit at the end. That way he'll eventually get stuck at the place you want him, so you can just not even LEAD him there as long as you created the path properly. You can do your own thing while he handles moving your chest.
Plus he's a turtle, so even if he's harrassed along the way, he'll just retreat into his shell until the danger leaves him alone. Creepers will generally ignore him when he's tucked into his shell.
@Grey: How would you reliably produce flowers though? I like where that's going. I did mean to include a image of him hiding in his shell.
@AKrause27: I like the idea of a whistle. That could be cool. Though I'm a huge fan of mob-calls in general. I would love a creeper whistle... "sssssssssss"
Portable lights would be cool. I think the real thing is just creating a Tortoise unique chest that carries as much as your inventory or more to basically double your mobile inventory. I would also like a saddle with a carrot on a stick kind of thing.
Just have flowers modified so that anytime you have a group of 2 or more flowers within 2 blocks of each other, they will attempt to grow more flowers. This will only affect flowers actively planted by the player, and new flowers will only be able to grow within a certain radius around the flowers equal to the number of flowers the player planted in that cluster. Flowers cant grow new flowers more than 1 block higher than they were planted, nor on any blocks beyond any 1 block higher obstructions.
Yeah, that would work. Or flowers could be modded to drop more than one seed. Then you plant seeds and flowers grow in like a day. Then you could just farm the bastards. That would be cool... that way you can stack 64 flowers and draw nice and easy paths.
You could also thwak him and he would retreat into his shill for a while and not come out until you drop a flower near him or something.
This idea seems cool. If you can place almost any block on it (except one that have practical reason why you can't, such as a liquid spawn, or torches(until we get moveable lights at least)) then it opens up a wide range of potential uses, from practical to silly to awesome.
not just what it can do but what it looks like, from the model you have created i can say this without any argument, it looks like the most friendly creature i've seen in minecraft yet.

amazing. A right little zoo we've got going here :smile.gif:. But seriously, practical implications are awesome, art is awesome, behaviour is awesome. As far as drops go, its shell. It's shell can then be used as a bowl/bucket/helmet/trophy.
Updated the model to include some satchels on the chest. I imagine that would give him at least a double chest sized inventory. Turn him into a little pack mule.
I would think that you'd have to specifically craft the storage rig for him. Maybe take a chest and surround it in leather or something.
Awesome. I'd Imagine Putting a Tnt on him and then send him straight into a dungeon with the tnt set off (snicker) it would be cool if you could put a torch on him and you wouldent have to run out of torches ever again. Also.... why does notch not hire you? your friggin awesome.

Monster Ideas: Poltergeist and Shadow
Dynamic Water
Scaffolding Blocks
Bone Block for the Nether
Please tell me you can put a saddle on him <3
I'm trying to figure out a better use for a block that can be placed on his back... I'm not sure. Anyone have any ideas?

TNT turtle, (hehe).
Sign turtle
furnace turtle
chest turtle
crafting turtle
flower turtle
sapling turtle
gold turtle
flaming hellstone turtle
one note:
-i think the spawn frequency should be relatively common, but the chance that two spawn near eachother should be low.
this means that you'll often encounter a turtle, but never in "packs"

just awesome
