All right, I kind of think players need some sort of protection for the first night in survival, as it's not terribly easy to build a house AND find coal for torches on the first day. Here's what I'm thinking:
Campfires would not require a workbench to use. They could have a cost something like this:
You can place campfires on the ground with right-click like you would a torch. It would produce more light than a torch and you could cook food on it, but it would disappear after a single day/night cycle. Also, enemies would be repelled by its light, so a campfire by itself could be a method of protection.
Campfires could not be placed on wood surfaces.
Campfires provide:
- A first-night source of light that doesn't force you to scramble for materials.
- An early-game method of cooking.
- Protection from enemies in the early game.
- An exploration tool allowing you to establish temporary bases without need of a workbench.
I could possibly see increasing the materials required so that it would be draining on your resources to produce a lot of them, though I strongly feel that campfires should be built with resources you'll have on the first night. For instance, it could cost:
(Actual logs, not planks).
Now for beds. I think players should be able to create bed blocks with a recipe something like this:
[] [] []
(That's wool, by the way.)
Two bed blocks next to each other would form a bed. By right-clicking on a bed, your character would go to sleep for 1/3 of the day, causing that amount of time to pass instantly (only applicable in SSP). At the end of that time, you would regain 1 lost Heart. After sleeping, you must spend at least 1/2 of the day awake before sleeping again.
Beds would provide:
- A way to regain hearts (albeit slowly) without having to hunt for food.
- A way to skip through nighttime if you want do be doing things through the day or vice versa.
- A nice tile to flesh out your house.
I don't really know how they'd work in SMP. Perhaps logging out next to a bed in multiplayer would allow you to regain hearts slowly while logged out.
EDIT: Dead players can choose to respawn at a bed they constructed.
I like the bed concept but you need to work on the reward part of the bed because hearts are too easy to refill in this game. Cooking and creating fires is also quite easy to do in this game.
I like the bed idea, and the camp fire idea. As for the reward for the bed, healing seems to be a minor part. Early in the game you have little to do inside while waiting for dawn. It would also give a point to wool.
As for the camp fire, we can go the "rubbing two sticks together" route and use either of these two:
---
---
As for cooking food on it, cooking in the early game is not very necessary as you aren't doing much that will get you hurt. Though it would help for cooking when you're away from home later in the game.
I agree we need a cooking specific toolbench sort of construct, but in order to make it viable we need to expand cooking options and importance. A campfire would just negate the need to bring a furnace with you while you spend a night or two away from your cabin.
I edited the first post to include another idea involving beds.
What if any bed you construct can be used as a respawn point? This would give beds a very useful purpose in both singleplayer and multiplayer.
Here's another thought: in multiplayer, it would not be possible to allow a player to skip time by sleeping at a bed, nor would it be feasible to force a player to wait 5 or 6 minutes just to heal a single heart. However, the resting effect of a bed can be emulated quite easily. When a player logs out next to a bed, that player would regain 1 heart for each in-game day that passes before they return.
Difficulty comes in many forms, we should be solving the annoying issues, and introducing decisions and challenges to the player. Your opinion is noted, though not well constructed or debated.
I think that campfires are great. But they should be made from 4 logs, and you add more sticks to fuel the fire. Also, if possible, maybe needs to be lit with flint.

I wouldn't make it like a torch, but so it works more like a furnace, albeit burning slower (maybe 1/2 to 1/4 the furnace speed.) You'd have room to insert sticks, wood and logs. But I like the idea. Have it cast more light than regular torches and be able to cook meat.
I suggested in big awesome crafting tech tree thread that it just be made of 2 blocks of dirt in the inventory crafting screen. I think it makes sense. If you're going to be adding the fuel afterwards, then the space you'd use for a campfire would just be dirt, really.

A bed would be nice.It gives some home-like touches for my cold...lonely...dark...fortress...im so lonely :,(
I've found that you can make a pretty good looking bed out of regular blocks
Once Notch adds dye, I'll be making them using dyed sheets and white pillows :biggrin.gif:
My thoughts on the campfire: You want to the game to be easier then it all ready is. NO.
So you see no possible ways in which my idea can be beneficial? What if the game is made harder? What if campfires are nerfed?

Campfire:
Being able to cook food: YES.
Brighter than a torch: YES.
Lasts one night: YES.
Repels enemies: NO.
If I was a monster, I'd go to the campfire for I would believe civilization was there.
Beds:
Excellent decor: YES.
Regain 1 heart: YES.
Have to be awake at least half-a-day before sleeping again: YES.
Cutting time: NO.
If it cut through the night-time, you wouldn't have to worry about monsters. But a way to replenish a heart and add some decoration is a fat
Thank you for your opinion. I'm not totally married to campfires repelling enemies or beds skipping time. However, I would like to know your opinion on using beds as a respawn point (or anyone else's opinion on that matter).

Uhh... I don't know about campfires being made from dirt. I'm not entirely opposed to adding fuel to extend a campfire's duration, but it should still start out from some sort of wood base. I do agree that campfires should cook slower than more permanent methods such as furnaces or stove blocks (if/when they are implemented).
