There are three things you can mine in Minecraft: Ore, raw material, and dust. With the exception of glowstone, they all have the same shape. I just thought it'd be nice to have a bit more variety in the appearance of blocks. In addition to looking nice, this could help distinguish similarly-colored minerals that may be added in the future. This idea was partially inspired by my brief glance at the More Ores V4 thread. I sort of skimmed, got down to the pictures, and went, "Hey, that looks sweet. But all those shades of red would be hard to distinguish in a dark cave..." So I came up with this.
Anyway, here's a handy little chart I made of possible different appearances. It uses diamond colors, but these could of course be changed:
I could easily do recolors. The program I use lets you edit the palette, which changes every instance of a particular color in the image. I can't make fancy 3D pictures like they have in the More Ores thread, but I can easily provide the flat textures.
Thoughts, suggestions, criticisms, etc. all welcome. For instance, I tried to keep the feel of the original ore sprite with my 'raw' image, but do you think it should just be one big object in the middle instead of many small spherical ones?
Edit: (( Out-of-date; the colors in this one are slightly off. )) Hey! Want to try it out? Here's a new terrain.png for you to download: http://img863.imageshack.us/img863/9776/terrain.png After backing up your minecraft.bin file, simply open minecraft.bin using WinRAR or something similar, then paste the file directly into it, overwriting the previous terrain.png file. If you need help with any of this, try Googling it before asking.
Very cool. I have gotten board of all of the ores looking the same. However, because this is just a graphical change, couldn't you just install a texture pack? Or am I misunderstanding what your suggestion is?

Well... Yes, actually. Good point. But it's still something for Notch and his team to consider if they add new materials that might resemble the old ones, or if they just feel like adding a little variety to Minecraft's default textures. You're right, though, I can make a little custom terrain.png and let people download it and try it out... I'll do that now, link coming soon!
Good idea, but maybe the appearance could just give more ore less of the item or give you a chance for more. Either that, or some bricks can have a more textures than others. Or the alternative to get a texture pack....

Yeah, something like lapis lazuli for red-stone. Maybe just a different formation for each ore is all that needs to be done. I feel it is needed, but giving it different properties for each re-texture is going over board.

The idea's not bad, per se...But the images offered I find ugly.
Yes, I am not a great artist by any means.

I imagine more redstone as a soild rock with cracks in it glowing red, as a glowing heart of pure redstone lies there. I imagine ore as a weak rock that could be smashed with just a rock into dust.
That's an interesting idea. I don't think I have the artistic ability to pull it off, but I think it'd look pretty cool.
I am a good artist in both drawing with a pencil and the computer.

If you're complaining about things being hard to distinguish in dark caves... Get torches.
That's part of it, yes. Some of the shades in the More Ores thread were quite close together. Plus, there are many new ores! It would be easier to remember which does what if they looked a little different, that's all.
OK. I like this! Only problem, I might sometimes think dust is normal stone, and then I get unwanted redstone or something. Maybe change it so that it's a bit more distinguishable from stone.
maybe they could produce different resources, for example, the dust block would make a pile of dust from a mineral, the raw block could produce a larger, more valuable version of said mineral, and the ore would remain unchanged. they could aslo be crated into each other (the dust, chunks, and ore), and open new crafting possibilities, as well as pointing out other blocks, for example, if you find dust, ore could be nearby, and if you find ore, chunks could be nearby. i definitely

Okay, OP, correct me if I'm wrong, but this (above) is not the sort of thing you're talking about at all. You simply mean that blocks which drop ore blocks (ore) have one appearance, blocks which drop a refined item (raw) have another, and blocks which drop a dust (dust) have a third, yes? Meaning you could have a new material which dropped a dust the same colour as diamond, but which would be completely separate from diamond, and there would be no confusion when mining - you'd instantly recognise from the block's texture whether it was diamond or the new, completely separate item.
Approve. It allows more flexibility in creating future mineable materials, and provides a visual cue as to what type of drop you'll get from a block (will I need to smelt it or not, for example).
Yeah, you've got the right idea; I wasn't suggesting that other thing at all. Though that's an interesting concept as well, it's one I'm hesitant to support. It sounds a little over-complicated to me, but maybe I'm just not thinking it through well enough. Anyway, thanks for your support!
