This is a pretty simple request - yet it seems it hasn't been requested before as there are no other threads about it that I could find.
When a minecart is moving along a minecart track, I'd like to hear a railway-type noise ... preferably that changes based on the speed of the cart (faster beat when the cart is going faster), so that it sounds like you're actually on a real railway (rather than silence, as it is now).
Anyone else agree?
I have been using Java for years, just need to look into how to create mods for the game, and I may be able to add this functionality myself. But to me, this seems like something that should be part of the official release.
Yes, a noise from a mine cart is needed to relieve the boredom of going on a long track. I don't want an annoying one though. Maybe noises when it is slowing down and has came to a stop.

I am just a guy looking for good suggestions that are original, creative, and match the theme of Mine-craft. I have some mob ideas that I need help forming which is a community project.
I do agree, having a stranderd minecart have a squeaky noise, and a propelled minecart have a kinda of a train sound.
I think that is a an excellent idea.
Thanks for the support! If a lot of people agree with me on this, then I'll send Notch the link to this thread via Twitter and hope he sees it.

Ah, good point. On a long track it might be annoying. I suppose the only way to test that though is with trial and error - implement something, go rolling down a track for 5 minutes, and if you're not in the other room blocking your ears by the end... it must be alright ;-)
When a cart is slowing down it's usually due to lack of momentum, not due to brakes or anything being applied, so I think the only change there would be that the tempo would gradually slow down. I don't think even the powered minecart has brakes - it just runs out of fuel and slows down.
maybe every 10 rails or more it would create the sound instead of every contact with a rail piece. The slower the cart is the fainter the noise.

Actually, that's a great idea! That would mean that when the cart moves slower, the sound effect is automatically played less often (and vice-versa with speeding up).
I'll have a go at the mod when I have a chance. Not sure if 10 will be the ideal number of rails, but can easily sort out those details during testing. Depending on how much time I have and how easy the game is to mod, I might be able to offer a way to configure that.

Railcart sound effect
Railcart moving along a track = silence. Let's change that!
