Alright, I searched for this one (with the magic of Google in lieu of the actual forum search bar), and didn't see anything similar, so here goes.
Mini-table for your convenience: Name: Stalker Location: Caves Health: 10 hearts Damage: 2 on easy, 3 on normal, 4 on hard Drops: 0-2 mushrooms (randomly brown or red)
The main concept is a mob that lurks in caves and reacts to the amount of noise the player makes. As long as you're walking and it can hear your footsteps, it will move slowly toward you. It can't hear you while you sneak. If you ever stop making noise (either by sneaking or standing still), the mob will stand still for something like seven seconds while it waits for you to make more noise. If you don't, it will hone in on the last spot it heard you in. If you're still there, it will run into you and damage you. I think it should deal 2 hearts of damage on easy, 3 on normal, and 4 on hard. It'll have 10 hearts for itself, like most (all?) other hostile mobs. It should drop 0-2 mushrooms, randomly red or brown; I choose mushrooms because nothing else in-game really feels appropriate, and I'm not going to make up something entirely new for it to drop. Definite room for expansion there, though.
So... Listens to sounds, tries to attack player based on last heard location, drops mushrooms... Oh, and it looks like this:
I'm not an artist, but you can kind of see what I'm going for. It has one leg with four little extensions in each direction; these wiggle around when he moves, letting him sort of glide across the floor. He has two big arms to reach out at you with, and his eyes and mouth are sewn shut. Been done before, I know, but it's still creepy.
This mob isn't particularly hard to fight; it's slow and you can simply sneak away from it or past it. I'm suggesting it because I think it'd be a pretty cool baddie to encounter in the caves. Not everything has to be super overpowered to be interesting. Besides, it could be a real problem if you run into this guy and other mobs. Also, since its mouth is sewed shut, all of the noises it makes are like muffled voices, including muffled screams when you attack it or it dies. It's idle noises are muffled murmurs, quieter and less frequent than most other mob idle sounds. As for its size, I'm thinking it's just a little bit taller than creepers/skeletons/zombies/player. Obviously we don't want it too big, otherwise it couldn't fit through any tunnels.
'Stalker' is the best name I could think of at the moment; after all, it does indeed stalk the player based on sound. More specific names like 'Listener' or 'One-legged dangly-armed clown face man' just sound silly to me. And... that's all I've got for now.
Edit: Here's something I threw together in DeleD. I may be even worse at 3D modeling than I am at drawing, but I figured I'd share anyway:
I like this post and feel its a solid idea i think it is DELICIOUS i like the idea of the sewn shut mouth but one thing i feel is a little off is the same one leg 4 feet like thing Creepers have and yet again maybe that was what your going for

MINE~ CRAFT ~ MINE ~CRAFT~ MINE ~ CRAFT~ Real life break for 5min ~ MINE ~ CRAFT
i got a texture pack now, its here it changes how armor and tools look and has a few slight changes to a few blocks in terrain like making the redstone torch look more like a redstone torch then a lollipop.
its a great mob idea, but i have a few suggestions, for appearance, maybe getting rid of the eyes, i mean, if it lives in those caves, and its attacks and movements are based solely on sound, it shouldn't need them, even if they are sewed shut. and for a few name suggestions, lurker? hunter? abandoned? i dunno. XD
This sound like and advanced mutated super creeper!
Noooo, no. No explosions, it's not even all that dangerous. Chill out a little, heh.

That's a good point. It doesn't need the eyes, though I do want its appearance to remain suitably creepy... I suppose a blank face could be pretty frightening... Though in Minecraft, it's hard to tell it's a face if it doesn't have a face texture... it'll just look like a block... But if that block always turns towards you, that could be pretty cool, heheh... I like it. As for lurker, I actually had another idea for a lurker mob; there should be a link in my sig (except I ended up calling it Dweller for reasons explained in that post). Hunter sounds good. Abandoned sounds cool too, but I don't know who or what abandoned this fella. 'Abandoned' might better suit a mob who sits in the corner and cries all the time, or something, haha. To me, anyway.

when i came up with "abandoned, i thought it could be a member of another group of mobs that could've been caved in or something. anyway, i'll check out that lurker/dweller, oddly enough, dweller was another idea i had for this mob. :tongue.gif:
I've seen the tunnel mite thread, I even linked to it in my dweller thread. I thought the stalker was a bit different. It doesn't lurk on the ceiling, for instance, and it's tougher than the mites.

That's not bad, I do like having open-ended elements like that. Particular names or situations that make you wonder about the mythology of Minecraft. For instance, zombie pigmen have always interested me. It's not enough that they're pigmen, but they're undead as well? Yet despite these two rather monstrous traits, they're neutral until you attack them... Certainly makes you wonder, which I like.
Oh man how creepy would that be (in a good way) XD I would go paranoid walking around in the cave and knowing that thing could be lurking around. I hope it gets added!

Thanks! As it is, I'm terrified of caves in Minecraft. I have no idea why I insist on suggesting things that will only torture me further... I'm a masochist, I suppose, haha.
This is an amazing idea. What would it drop? It should be something either found in a cave like coal or something that can only be found or made by that one mob like how it used to be just creepers that dropped sulpher.

That might've been hard to see because it was all in one paragraph, but it's there.
Also: Sneaking being useful for stuff other than building bridges and the like. I approve, and I hope that Notch sees this.
