Tired of switching away from your current tool/weapon just to punch out some dirt? Wouldn't it be easier if you could somehow use the tool without wearing out the durability? Well, what if you could just turn it around and use the handle? After all, you can destroy blocks with sticks, and the sticks never break. Why not add a right-clicking function to tools (since most don't have one now) that lets you use the handle to pummel things as though you're doing it barehanded? It's a simple suggestion, but one that could come in handy. It would save a lot of inventory switching.
Think about it: You're exploring a cave system when you start hearing mob noises. They seem to be coming from the other side of a dirt wall. You could switch to your shovel and be through there in no time... but what if you could just use the hilt of your sword (or even your left hand?) to clear away the dirt? That way you could still be ready to strike the instant you dig into the mobs' room.
Seems like a good idea to me. I searched, didn't find anything similar... It was hard to search, though, because terms like 'right-click' and 'tools' tend to come up a lot. Hope this isn't a repeat.
It has been suggested before. If search was still working, I'd give you the link. I entirely agree though, except that swords should have a parrying move as their right click feature.
Oh, I'm fairly sure this is an original idea. I don't think it's a good one, but certainly original.
Where is the difficulty in just hitting one key or, if you're especially lazy, using the mouse scroll? I mean, if you don't want to switch items for every task, why not just go through the whole game barehanded?
I gave rapiers a parrying move (Weapons Thread) since that is what they are more comonly known for, then Swords could be used to bash through the wall of dirt

It literally takes less than a second to switch from one tool to another. There is absolutely no reason for the handle of any of them to come into play.
Being clumsy does not necessitate a rewrite of game mechanics. If one is so error prone that they constantly miss a simple keystroke or wheel scroll, that's their problem.
And I'm really sounding like more of an asshole than I mean to, so I apologize. But the point stands.
It's a matter of convenience. Shovels, Axes, and Pickaxes (and swords, though I want their right click to function as a parry) have no right click function, so why not allow right click to act as a bare handed hit that keeps you from losing durability, but will only give the drops that you would get by breaking the block barehanded?
I'll admit, there's nothing inherently wrong with the idea. It's completely optional, wouldn't change gameplay, and in theory it's completely harmless to anyone who wouldn't care to use.
It's just, to me, the whole idea seems wholly unnecessary. But that's just me, so... yeah.
Aaand, what about the hoe? Or if Notch wants to add extra special effects to the right click of other tools (similar to the 2x2 mod)?
I'm gonna have to side against Grey on this one. Binding right click for all tools into, essentially, "use my fist instead" limits possible creativity with new items and changes to old ones.

That's true; if Notch has plans for other tools having right-click, this shouldn't be implemented. But if it's just the hoe, well... we don't really need to fast-fist with the hoe anyway. Gardening usually isn't as intense as cave exploring/mining.

Not really. Like I said, the sword should have Parry as a right click feature, and the Hoe already has tilling blocks as its right click feature. This means that "use my fists" could be the right click feature of the other items, and if notch wants to add a different feature, or a better features is thought up, then the "right click = use fist" feature gets bumped out of the way to make room for the new feature.
Really, the only tool that I really WANT the "right click = use fist" feature on is the pickaxe. If you're mining large amounts of stone, you will likely come across a couple pieces of dirt or gravel. Being able to switch to the hand would still allow you to mine these things without putting the pickaxe aside, so you could still have it ready for when you got back to stone. If you're using an axe on wood, you're typically not needing to mess with stone in the middle of that, and of course, what's the point in using your fists when you've got a shovel? You're already mining dirt, which could have been done by hand anyway.
It's late, so maybe this should be disregarded, but you know what'd be neat? A pickaxe/shovel. Like, a tool where you left-click to use the pick-axe side, right click to use the shovel side. They share the same durability bar, but it has the combined durability of both separate tools because it requires you to use a pickaxe and a shovel to craft it. Like, pickaxe in the top square, shovel in the bottom, and string between them. Just a random thought, now I'm off to bed.
