I had an idea for a mob that's somewhat been suggested before, but as I was writing up my reply to the original thread, I found that my version was actually a lot different. Basically, it's some kind of creepy-crawly that spawns only in dark caves. It avoids the light. It moves from light depending on the intensity; the brighter the light, the faster it moves. So imagine yourself exploring a cave, placing torches as you go, when you suddenly notice something black slinking out of view just ahead of you. OooOOOooo.
I think it should have ten hearts, like the other hostile mobs. The damage these baddies deal is equal to a zombie attack (easy - 1.5, normal 2.5, hard 3.5). They won't willingly leave the dark, so fighting them there is almost just like fighting a zombie; in the dark, their movements are slow and calculated. If a dweller can't stay in the dark, it will freak out and attack the nearest light source (knock down your torches or break glowstone/jack-o-lantern). If the nearest light source is fire, the monster will extinguish it. It sees lava as an inextinguishable source of light, and therefore avoids it. If it's ever exposed to sunlight, it will burn like zombies and skeletons. While freaked out, this monster moves quickly and wildly, trying to find a dark enough place to hide. It makes a shrieking sound while doing this, similar to the ghasts' sounds of pain (although maybe more spiderlike). If it's kept in enough light too long (maybe three seconds), it will start taking half a heart of damage per second.
I think they should spawn and stay in caves rather than wandering the surface, kind of like slimes but at any depth. As for drops, I think they should drop 0-2 pieces of coal. Its sound should be a soft breathing, an inhale and exhale that plays like the other mob idle sounds. As for its appearance...
Forgive me, I'm not an artist. But yeah... Short legs, head in the middle of its body, tri-segmented arms waggling at you from its shoulders. And a tail, because why not?
Its eyes shouldn't actually glow, but I was thinking its head could look something like this:
When it's in the dark, it looks like the image on the right. When there's enough light to make it back away or freak out, its head flips over.
I guess it's sort of like a hybrid between zombies and spiders, but I still think it's worth considering. The main thing I'm going for is a monster that lurks in the darkness and avoids light, the other specifics aren't quite as important to me. I think 'lurker' would be a good name for it (which is the name in the original thread I looked at), but since that's the name of a popular water-based mob idea that was also suggested, I'll go with '.'
This is just, agh.
Too much awesomeness.
Although I'm not sure about the shape, I think a little tweaked version of your Stalker should fit more. You see, as I was reading the description, I started imagine something like a really bony, skinny guy, with practically no hair, and extremely pale (well, if light never touches your skin, I don't remember how the process was, but the melanin starts losing its tone). Anyhow, I'm not saying that would fit in MC, but, you know, something like that, skinny, really pale, practically no eyes, or just really small ones and a really nasty screaking sound as it runs towards you and slashes all the torches around him would be cool :tongue.gif:
Unless of course, you want to make it some sort of arachnid being, there it could keep its dark tone and its glowy eyes, and stuff.
Oh, yes, I just realised, you could compare what I'm trying to explain with the L4D series' Witch.
I like the idea, but my only suggestion would be to have it still take a bit of damage if it took out a fire. It would add a bit of strategy to killing it.
The problem about this is the fact on how will the game know what is a cave or not?

I am just a guy looking for good suggestions that are original, creative, and match the theme of Mine-craft. I have some mob ideas that I need help forming which is a community project.
I think there should be a reason for them dropping coal. Like catching fire when they are too close too light.
They could also eat exposed coal, but then they should drop all they have consumed.
As for the shape. i first pictured something like a lump or ball with lots of arms dragging itself away.
But I like the current design :smile.gif: Although it would be cool if they changed stance according to the situation.
Like if they in the dark were using their arms as legs. And when in light they could stand up, stretching their arms towards the light source in an attempt of destroy it, or towards you. It would be interesting with an enemy with a long reach that's not a projectile. The tail could also be like a third leg while upraised.
I also like the name Dweller, although it doesn't really give of the creepiness factor I think this mob should give of.
And how should they behave in the dark. Especially if you're in the dark too. Should they stalk you? Or just mindlessly attack like any other mob. Mayne they should attack as you place a source of light?
The potential of this mob is huge and I would really like to see something like this in the game!

Well... since it does indeed burst in to flames when exposed to sunlight, I guess that's that, huh? But if you need another explanation, well... maybe they're just covered in coal from wandering around underground for so long. I don't really think they should eat coal, that seems odd to me.

Interesting! That's a bit more complex, but I do like the idea. Those spindly arms of his should definitely have some reach to them, heh.

Hm... I think they should attack like other mobs in the dark, yeah. On the other hand, it would be interesting if they were neutral in the dark, so you could just walk past them as long as you don't place any torches like that... That's a cool idea, too.

Well, that's about all I got.
Edit: This guy's got the right idea: http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=54538 I'd be pretty happy with that.
Very creative

P.S. This looks like one of those Tyrant creatures from Warhammer 40k(the board game)
