I've noticed a distinct lack of a hammer in the tools category. Most likely because of its assumed redundant nature, but I think I've come up with justifiable use for implementing it.

My idea of the hammer, is that a of time saving tool that has three functions and one restriction.
The first function is a simple one, striking the top face of and blocks normally with the hammer replaces them with a beaten path block, to make trails without spending time digging and replacing.
The second function is copy a block and lay another block down upon it by right clicking and this is where that single restriction comes in that you most have a supply of the targeted block your inventory. Before you say this is redundant because of mid clicking, the hammer will also lock on to that block's type, vertical level and initial aiming angle when you hold down the right button. So if you right click the southern face of a block that is on the third level, it will only lay down blocks on the southern side of any block that is on the third level until you release the button. This is to help prevent wasting time and tool durability by laying down accidental blocks and removing them with the appropriated tool.
The third function is a defensive one, using the hammer as a weapon, while not doing more than average damage, will know the knock the enemy back farther away then every thing else.
I particularly like the first function, that would be excellent since digging and replacing can really eat up time. A beaten path winding through the country-side would be excellent anyway.
Hammers should be the first and only weapons/tools used on mobs and player, to actually stun or cause dizzyness, but slow to hit. Maybe not literally stun but something to disorient mobs and players so they can't fight back normally.
