I'd just like to see survival mode have a town you start at (or spawn near to). Very small, nothing crazy (i.e. not procedurally generated). It would have a few NPCs that could give you some hints and tips -- mostly focused around crafting as well as nudging you along in the game to make sure you experience as much as the game can offer.
In addition, and this hasn't been thought out well (and I'm still new to the game) -- but of course there's also the possibility of doing more with the town without making the game overly complicated. Simple shops, quest givers that make you fetch certain blocks for rewards. For example, the possibility of having a shop that sells things you couldn't craft yourself. You could just use the blocks you've collected already as currency.
In the end I think the base idea is great for two reasons:
1) It allows new players (of which there will be many when the final game releases) to be slowly introduced to the game.
2) It gives the players a home/place of emotional attachment before they manage to build one for themselves.
3) I'm still unsure if even I'd want this in the game. But a shop could very well add a lot to the game as long as it's done right and doesn't take away from the spirit of the game. For example, the fun of having to travel "to town" every now and then to get some extra resources you've had trouble finding. As well as a way to find decorative blocks for your base/whatever you're building. There's many ways to take it that I feel may add to the game as long as it's done with tact and respect to the core (obviously I'm not worried about notch messing that up).
Sounds like that's peeking to much into an RPG. Notch is planning to add NPC towns I'm pretty sure they're not going to be that interactive. When SMP comes out I think we can leave the players to make the towns and shops.

I have no doubt that many people want the game to go in the direction of an RPG. Which isn't a bad idea, but I think I'd like that to be done as a different game. I love what minecraft is already. A big world that you shape yourself. Massive quests, a storyline, and a bunch of NPCs would only distract/take away from that charm. That's why I'd like the town to be very simple and stripped down. And offer only what I described in the first post.

This has been a parody of a typical response on this forum.
In reality, I like it.
Good idea.
You are a swell chap.

You have your indev and infdev now, but there should be smaller gamemodes that fit within them that suits their needs.
Rpg works great with infdev because of the huge vastness, and simple minigames work with indev and infdev.
I laugh at your minecraft community that shuns rpgs, as a gamer that accept most and all games, with the exception of sports games.
this
besides, theres already gonna be a tutorial level
