First of all, the vignetting in its current form is distracting. The filter is too discrete, and you notice the distinct shades a lot when you move around and is kind of nauseating. If it must stay in, my suggestion is to give it a smoother shading. If that is not possible, have the rings expand/contract slightly on each frame. The only reason we can see it is because it is perfectly static an has discrete edges. If it were moving quickly but subtly, especially in a dark environment, it would be harder to perceive.
Second is this projection interpolation Minecraft uses. What with the constantly repeating texture, it creates a rather strong Moiré pattern. You can get eliminate this with spacial anti-aliasing, or even better, mipmapping.
I don't use OpenGL, so I'm not sure what techniques specifically are built into it, but I know there are things that can be done.
the vignetting thing I agree with. Currently, I can only spot it against stone, so I don't even get a chance to grow accustomed to. Dithering would help, I think, so it doesn't have sharp edges... random movement might work too, although I wouldn't want too much flickering to be going on.
I think I wouldn't be able to play it, infdev barely runs on this 2006 piece of plastic.
I believe that currently, vignetting is done using a png image. changing the image wouldn't impact the preformance at all. As for the mipmapping, if I am understanding it properly it would make the game run Better because it now has the chance to use low-res textures instead of always scaling down hi-res textures. well. "Hi-res". 16-16 is not exactly high.
