With the new "flowing water" system, I though of this.
PANNING FOR ORES
So the idea is, you stick a grate, net or whatnot in a river and every 1-2 minecraft days a nugget of some ore appears on it. You can take this nugget and use it. The more grate or net you have the more ore you get. You will also get sand, dirt and fish if they get inplemented. Thoughts?
Fairly useless unless there's a high chance of getting diamond out of it. You could probably just go mining for iron and coal and get much more in a given amount of time. However, fish nets sound like a good idea.
It's an interesting idea, although having a passive system like this doesn't sound ideal. I'd rather have, say, a gold pan, and using it against wet gravel has the chance of giving up some (already refined) materials.
Maybe an automatic sluice box could work as an advanced craft.
It would either be pointless, since an ore everyday or too is extremely slow, or overwhelmingly broken, as people make farms of these and have a net income from it of ridiculousness.
I agree with everyone on this one...
I think it's a good idea and a bad one.
I see this only working in Adventure mode where it wouldn't be exploited, however a feature like this doesn't make sense to implement it for just one mode of gameplay. And I'm not familiar enough with adventure to know if it would even work in that mode. But it would only work if it could be limited to natural rivers/streams, which survival doesn't limit.

I was thinking place a gravel block in a mushroom stew bowl, then use it on a river or ocean for a chance at something nice like gold nuggets, magnetite, garnet, whatever. The gravel block is moved to the bottom of the body of water, or is expended entirely. Once you have four or nine gold nuggets, you can craft it into an ingot!
