Hi, what I'm proposing is charcoal. Charcoal would basically be a tool used for drawing.
How to make it:
You have to take a cube of refined wood and put it in the furnace (maybe just at the bottom) that turns into the charcoal lump which could be place-able. Take that and put it in the crafting bench. Each block crafts into 3 charcoal sticks which you use to draw. Just a quick idea; when you walk on charcoal blocks it could make particles like the torches.
EDIT: Well, instead of putting a charcoal block in the bench you could put charcoal in the same formation as you would to make a stick, it gives you 3 charcoal sticks like the block.
How to use it:
To use it you walk up to any block (may exclude cacti, leaves, spawners ect.) and right click whilst holding the stick of charcoal. That will open a gui like a crafting bench but instead it doesn't show inventory and the bench. Instead it has a large square and two options; erase and draw. The large box will have an image of what you are drawing on and a bit on each side of the blocks surrounding it but you can't draw on them. When you are done and happy with your drawing you click "leave" which will take you out of the gui and in to normal play mode.
Other things:
Once you press leave a box will come up with an "are you sure" message. If no is clicked you go back to drawing and if yes is clicked you go to normal world. The other option in the gui is "quit" it has the same yes and no box but if you say yes then you get your charcoal back and there is no drawing.
If you want you can fill in the whole space or not do anything, but if you leave your drawing you can't get your charcoal back or edit that spot. To remove I suppose 2 hits from anything knocks it off. But you still don't get it back.
Why you would want it:
You could put markers in caves and draw maps of your land. But it won't replace signs completely because it sticks to the amount of pixels in a block which would mean taking up a lot of space to write a sentence.
This is the gui. The dark grey is where you would see the big block face texture.
Respond with any tweaks you can think of.
EDIT:
Well Notch added charcoal. :/ It's basically... Coal. Since it's basically the same at the moment, that means it can have a lot added on. I've edited the how to make section if you didn't notice.

Interesting idea, but blocks don't have really a lot of pixels to colour. It needs different shades for drawing, which could be made by burning different trees which would have different structures in different biomes.
And you didn't mention what will you do once you draw something...Save it as a picture? Make it a painting in Minecraft?
I guess it would act as a customized painting. As for bigger/more detailed pictures, it would show a bit of each block around it so you can continue lines.

Good solution, chalk would also be a good addition. It could make an X on a block so you wouldn't get lost in BIG cave systems so easily and it could also have similar use to charcoal (drawing)
Nice idea, chalk could be harder to acquire but is lighter and easier to see.

yes and even write numbers on pillars or something. coz srsly i hate walking back and start counting again and lsot count and start recounting coz srsly... jezzzz using touches as marker but c'mon
I like this idea a lot. Though would you really need to go in drawing mode? Can't you just select it on your hotbar and paint if the block is near enough?
I think charcoal should be something like this though:
[] []
[] []
[] [] = 8x Charcoal
or better
[] [] []
[] []
[] [] = 4x Charcoal
so you can make it while exploring.
Would give a use to those mountains of coal I have lying around.
But I don't think that makes much sense. (Seriously, can coal turn into charcoal?)
It would make more sense if you burn wood for it. I suppose there would be no need for a drawing mode but then it would be harder to draw and I'm not sure if it would work too well from different angles. Also there would be no erase. I think drawing would be a big gui like a crafting table but with a big box having whatever the texture of the box you're drawing on. Then on the side it would have draw & erase.

I was also thinking that you ought to be able to collect carbon from torches (see all that black stuff floating up? that's carbon) and use it to draw with somehow.

My YouTube channel is currently on hiatus, but I hope to get back to it at some point. Content is fairly random, but can be enjoyable, and is mostly game footage (mostly random Minecraft clips) from my nephews and me. Most popular MC vid so far is the one Vechs laughed at on Twitter!

That would mean you could to ??? I don't think it should go into too much detail in how you collect it.

I'll consider putting this in my sig if you make your original post more defined and clear, taking all the ideas you like from this discussion and outlining 1) How to make it 2) How you use it 3) Where you use it 4) Any other generals or particulars 5) Ask for suggestions.
Then I'll support it. But I love the idea, I just need it in a clearer format.

Now then, I'll keep my end of the bargain.
But first, a suggestion on the creation of charcoal. I'm not sure I like the furnace idea. Perhaps lumps of charcoal (which then can be crafted into charcoal sticks or whatever) drop like 75% of the time from burning objects (or only burning planks, or 100% from burning logs, or still 75% of the time from logs but multiples). Just an idea there. Possibly a 10% chance for burnt leaves to drop, seeing as that sounds unrealistic, yet burning leaves gives you nothing. Just an idea.
Second, you seem skilled enough to make a banner, so I'd like to see a representation of the charcoal drawing screen. I'm having a slightly hard time envisioning it.

I like your idea, commitment, and openness. I think it'll get you a little bit of recognition. Unfortunately, this isn't "The Aether" or "Oceancraft" and you won't get nearly as many supporters, but I do believe this one suggestion could go very far and could be very useful. Keep refining that original post and incorporating new ideas (and I'll keep responding, bumping your post, getting you more viewers :biggrin.gif: ).
you could draw on the map similar to on a block, and place it on a block. i suggest this because i have a large table in one of the rooms in my castle, and it would be cool if i could spread out a big map over it.

1. Refine wood.
2. Burn wood.
3. ???????
4. PROFIT!

Dark grey = where the block texture shows up.
