I really like this idea. I support. Maybe it could be made so that if you left click, picture would be in color. But if you right click it would be in black and white.
All items are bashed into the nearest block when left clicking, so this wouldn't work =P
Okay, some of you just aren't getting it. Redstone is NOT going to be involved in the process of making or taking pictures. It's just too complicated. It should be an easy Point and Click, and out pops your picture. No Development process, no crafting your pictures using Paper and Redstone, no keeping it in a dark room, etc etc. I'm against it's use because everyone is already obsessed about it and makes it out to be some godly amazing tool that can do everything! It's already been suggested that Redstone have magical properties, and be used to create runes, or even used as a Power Supply to power vehicles or Minecart Tracks. You can barely go through this forum without seeing people say "Oh! Redstone should do this!" Or "Redstone should do that!" But not me. It makes things too complicated, and I this idea should flourish on SIMPLICITY. I mean... come on. It's a low-tech camera. It's not going to stream Live Images through Red Stone circuits so you can watch what people do across the map! Its just absurd! Minecraft isn't set in modern day, people! Yeesh...
TL;DR: NO REDSTONE
In any case, Thank you all for supporting the idea!
I understand that the concept of keeping track of pictures would be a big hurdle to overcome if this idea were to be possible, and I'm very sure that we'll think of something. I no longer believe that it would be possible to have pictures stored in a folder in the Bin... But instead, I thought that they would behave like Signs! Thinking about it, there is no txt file for what you put on a sign in your folder, so they are obviously stored in the Server's data. I don't know of any bugs involving a sign misplacing text that was written on it, therefore whatever way they are stored seems like an eligible way to store pictures. However, this poses another problem: How will the server identify who took what picture, and which picture is which? Because, as stated, once a picture is taken, it drops to the ground as a collectible and placeable item (No Picture frame required). Perhaps the server will create a folder and give each user a specific numerical prefix, and each picture taken it's own specific numberical suffix to create a sort of Barcode that would be read and registered in the same way that Signs are saved and loaded! I'm sure there are a number of flaws in this idea, but again... We'll think of a way to work them out.
TL;DR: Each picture is given a Barcode that correlates to one specific picture, and will be read and saved alike Signs, ala a Server Folder.
Redstone could be used to take timed photos incase you want to be in the picture. For instance, imagine you want to have a picture of you and a back round of a farm, place the camera on an ideal point, right-click, and an option box will appear. A option would be a timer. To set the timer, place (X) number of redstone in and it will delay the camera for that many seconds. Other options may include color, angle, zoom, ect. Now imagine you want an action scene. LIke maybe you running away from a creeper. You could hook the camera to pressure plates and connect them with redstone dust. When you step on a pressure plate, the camera takes one picture. Say if your in an area with lots of passive mobs and they step on the pressure plate while your in the mine. Then it'll take unwanted photos. To solve that problem is to open the option menu for the camera and turn off a "redstone activated" option. Overall the camera is a good idea, but how will it work underwater with barley any light? Maybe a flash option powered by glowstone? We'll see when/if Notch programs it.

A timer delay would be a bit too sophisticated for this model of camera, but I see what you're getting at. Even so, the camera is a holdable tool, not one you can place and display, so that would make it impossible to hook redstone wires up to it. Even so, if the camera went off without you being there, you wouldn't be able to collect the photo! And for taking a picture with you in it, you'd have to press F5.
As for underwater pictures, there's no reason it should take anything special to do so. It already has a flash (indicated by the diamond used to make it) and you can already take pictures everywhere else, so it should be just fine underwater. No extra damage, no added item to make it work. Just a simple "point and click, theres your picture"
There is no need for this, sorry if I sound like a troll, but its true... I can simply use the PRNT SCRN button or use the ingame screenshot system.
Its a nice concept but when you think about it, there are loop holes in almost every plan/suggestion/etc.
See, but that's the difference between the Camera and a simple Screen Shot.
While they would work the same way essentially, its a matter of where you're showing it. Using a camera in game would make the picture displayable ONLY in game, where as using a Screenshot would only be displayable OUTSIDE the game in a forum or some such. If you'd read what I have so far, pictures would become like paintings or signs, where you can place them in game to show people something, without dragging them to it. You'd be able to take a picture of some hidden location and display it in game to show your friends, rather than gather everyone up on the forum to post the picture.
It's just a way to make the community IN GAME a little more... well... like a community! So you don't have to constantly leave the game in order to organize something cool.

Well a which is faster?
A) Hunt for diamonds.
B)Print Screen -> MSPaint -> Place in art image -> Play game.
But I guess it all depends how has you find diamonds but that is virtually impossible because there so rare.
Unless you mean like showing EVERYONE in the server without having everyone download a custom art file just to see it.
Sorry for the poor English. :/

Tried to read all comments, but dang that's a lot. Anyway, I agree with the picture frame idea, but not with a monitor. That makes it too technological, even though it can be used as an anti-grief. The only ways to display the picture would be the picture frame like already suggested, and maybe they could be put in normal books to turn them in to albums. The picture frames could be put up, and have one slot in their storage, where if you put a picture you took, they display it. The picture frame could be crafted like this.
= Paper
or with sticks instead. This would make it relatively cheap to get a picture frame, so maybe there should be a balance so you don't overload the game with all of the pictures you've framed and put up. Possibly they would be very pixilated or the camera only works after it charges up in the sun for a full day. And holds one or two charges at maximum. Then there doesn't need to be a durability, but there still could be, to limit it further.

To make it a little less common, you would have to have a dark room lit only with a redstone torch that's filled with water to develop your pictures... There would also be a 45% chance parts of your pictures will be blurred if you leave it in too long.
This might also be good, but I don't like the 45% chance to be blurred, that makes pictures a little too annoying.

I think all ideas should be thought over in a technical aspect.
Sure, having photos would be great, but the only way they would ever work is if you loaded them individually via a photo album.
The notion of having photos render in real time is preposterous, do you understand that in just a few minutes I could double the amount of textures in the game?
To fix that problem, because with even with the limitations I explained, with enough time, you could do exactly that, there could be a maximum number of pictures allowed to be saved on one world (and one server). On servers, the admin could select that number, but on SSP games, it might be something like 10.
I like the way you put it. It does make more sense to have to make a frame for them, rather than stick them anywhere. I however still do not agree with the notion of leaving it in the dark with redstone in order to develop. It'd be such an annoyance and if I know anything about the players of this game, they wouldn't bother with a camera because of it. In a game that beats it into your skull to be AFRAID of the dark, having a darkroom would be a nightmare! You go in for a picture... You come out with a Creeper. And I will still profess my distaste toward including Redstone for this idea. Everyone does it, and I hate it. It's overcomplicated and pointless. There's better things to do, and better things to use.
In any case, I will probably get to making the front page more up to date with these ideas...
Later tho. I'm feeling lazy and I have things to complain to the Support Forum.
Ok, my idea:
It USES 2 redstone as AMMO. Just have 2 in your inventory and the redstone disappears each picture. The frame seems like a good idea too to prevent spamming. Make it simple but still not too cheap.
for us (so we can make a camera)!
Perhaps just regular books could be the photo album and then a Book case could be the place able block for storing the pictures. It would finally give a use for Paper, books, and bookshelves.

Even better- craft one redstone dust above one paper using the 2x2 grid, and you get an Undeveloped Photo. They get used as ammo just like arrows.
I dare say that this could be a way to add redstone to the concept of a camera without overcomplicating it.
Uuuuuuuughh... Why don't you get it yet?! NO REDSTONE!
It's not the God Material. You can't do EVERYTHING with it and you shouldn't be able to! All Redstone Dust does is PASS electrical currents, like copper wires! Shoving wires into a camera will not make it work, so cramming dust into it would only screw it up!
NO REDSTONE.
And from now on, I'm just going to ignore any suggestions that want me to add it |:C

Not even as a way to make undeveloped pictures, as my suggestion suggests?
I agree about what redstone can and can't too, but it's possible that it could act as a light-reactive surface when applied as a film on a piece of paper.
Its preposterous. Redstone Dust isn't Pixie Dust! You can't sprinkle it over your problems and make all your dreams come true! Same with Glowstone Dust. Although I'd be a little more lenient toward that as it has no use right now, but there is already plenty for it, and I'd rather let other people keep their originality.
The way The Camera that I have suggested will work is 100% Idiot Proof. Simply hold the camera, right click to take a picture, and out pops your Picture ready to be placed in a Picture Frame and displayed. No electrical dust needed. Just point and click. Okay?
I mean, think of it this way! Once you find Diamond, you break the block and out pops a fully cut stone that you can craft with. You don't have to cut the ore carefully like a real diamond. You just break the block and out pops your nice gemstone, perfectly cut and all that fun stuff.
The camera operates beautifully, I don't want to change that at all. Redstone, on the other hand, might have a place here. Using it to make undeveloped photographs isn't a "pixie dust" solution. It makes it known that Redstone has a particular scientific quality that exists in real life- sensitivity to light. I know for a fact that silver is used in developing films, among many other chemicals, so it's reasonable to assume that light sensitivity is a property something can have or not, independent of everything else.
...that said, using Glowstone dust to make undeveloped photos instead might make even more sense. Either would be fine. I take issue with the lack of "ammunition" as it were, though. The bow requires arrows, so logically a camera requires photographic paper. You can't print on nothing, after all. Put some dust on some paper... close enough to real film. Close enough for Minecraft.
