Really just a RNG with a variable input.

Typing /roll 1d20 initiates a RNG with a possible output of 1-20.
ex: CapnFuzz rolled a 1d20 and got 8!

Typing /roll 2d20 initiates a RNG with two possible outputs of 1-20 simultaneously.
ex: CapnFuzz rolled 2d20 and got 16!

There should also be a command that shows the individual rolls via /ROLL rather than /roll.
ex: CapnFuzz rolled 2d20 and got 16! (8) (8)

Various commands would result in various possible numbers to be rolled.
ex: CapnFuzz rolled 1d3!
ex: CapnFuzz rolled 2d7!
ex: CapnFuzz rolled 10d1!

That last one is useless, but you get my point.

It'd be a little neat to have a giant dice roll out in front of the character doing the rolling, but that's just for show.

Imagine the epic D20-style games that could be played on MC maps.

Also, first post. Howdy.

Couldn't we implement this through server-side modding? I mean, if we can make it so we can teleport and fly, this wouldn't be hard. (Well, aside from the visual effect of a die block rolling... Though having a die block entity to play with would be pretty neat!)
This may be a fad, but I love dragons, so why the heck not?

I don't know if that would be possible or not, I know jack squat about coding, but I would think a vriable input RNG would be on the low-scale of difficulty for things to add to the game as a feature, rather than a mod that you have to go searching for.

Actually, I believe it is on some servers.
Just your average idiot.

This is a pretty cool idea, and I'm sure a lot of people would use it. But I'd have to agree with Kydo with the server-side modding, it's probably simple enough to do through the chat (like a regular command), and wouldn't need to have a dedicated item for it. If notch were to put this in I won't argue, but I just think it's possible for other people to put just as easily.

I meant for it to be a regular command to be used in chat.

I'd imagine it would ideal be added when the chat is a bit more stable, though.

If that's what you meant then I totally agree with you XD
A dice command would be cool.

The character actually rolling a dice block would be so cool!
I can see gambling with gold and items being done in Multiplayer Survival, or just deciding who's gonna go first into the dark pit filled with creepers.

Leader: "Okay, since Reggie rolled a 20, he's going in first"
Reggie: "Wait, shouldn't the highest number win?"
Leader: "No, silly, the dice roll makes your attacks do more damage"
Reggie: "really?"
Leader: "Of course"
Reggie: "O-ok then..."

*Reggie goes in the cave*

Creeper: "SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS-BOOM"
Creeper 2: "SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS-BOOM"
Creeper 3: "SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS-BOOM"

Reggie: "THEY'RE EVERYWHERE OHGODWHY"

Also, I'm for this addition to the game.

That's fine and good for now, but the more things the game comes with on it's own, the better.

At least, IMO.

I want the game to have potatoes. That would be amazing.

I have a little bit of experiences coding (not in java though). The logic behind this is fairly easy to implement though i cant see why you would want more than 1 dice, why not pick a dice with 2x as many sides.

X=100 `(or however many sides you want on your dice)
Y= rnd 1 to X
Print Y,0,0 `(Would need to add more logic to this, not sure how notchs chat works)
Next x
next y

Having multiple dice changes the likelihood of specific outcomes. Take, for example, two 6 sided dice vs one 12 sided dice.

the possibilities for two D-6's allows for one possible result of 2 (1+1), and one of 12 (6+6), and 6 different ways of getting 7. (1+6,2+5,3+4,4+3,5+2,and 6+1)

This leads to 7 being way more statistically likely than 2 or 12, allowing for results to be distributed in an aproximate bell-curve.

Alternatively, a 12 sided die has just as much chance of landing on any number between 1 and 12, and so is not as likely to produce moderate values.

I've programed a bunch of different games in different languages, and I've had to do Dice type things in almost all of them, and it is fairly simple. It would take 10 min to make something like that, probably.

Most d20 table-top games require multiple dice to be rolled, as well.

Roll to hit? 1d20
Roll to do damage? 2d6/2d4/1d8/1d12
Did you crit? 4d6/4d4/2d8/2d12

etc.
