So. I took the basic water elevator design...water collection system...and funneled the skele's into a drop... Then using three sets of sticky pistons, trapped the skele's in a 2x1 area and squished for 9.5 seconds to get down to 1/2 heart (23 repeaters at 4 and 1 at 3).

Blue is first to go immediately after the switch is pulled to trap skeletons in 2x2 area. THEN, green pushes them into the 2x1 area about 0.4 seconds later and the yellow starts suffocating another 0.4 seconds after that for a total of 9.5 seconds suffocation. The yellow then releases with T-flip/flop and you're free to lob a healing potion at the iron bars and collect xp and arrows/bones.

It is too wide and takes too much time for skeletons to leave spawning area.
To make ot more effective you have to move mobs more than 8 blocks away from the spawner itself (horizontally). Or over 4 blocks vertically. If there are too many skeletons in the 17 by 17 by 9 space (including the spawner in the centre) they will stop spawning. If I am not wrong 7 skeletons in the 17x17x9 area will prevent from spawning more of them until they are far enough.

So your soffocation piston should be more than 8 blocks from the spawner. Thanks to that while standing by the piston the whole spawning pad will be in range of 15 blocks and will provide the best spawning ratio.
My best creations posted on the forum http://dl.dropbox.co...Craft_Stuff.htm

Good point!

From what I've seen, the skele's all move pretty quick down the slope to the collection pit to the funnel at the right side of your screen (on the screenshot). Once they are in the pit more skele's can spawn. This allows time for the skele's to queue themselves up as they funnel up to the elevator without blocking new skele's from spawning.
