Right now, the only point of dyes is to dye sheep and wool.
My idea is for the ability to dye leather armor. All you do is craft a piece of leather armor together with any color of dye. The armor would act the exact same, but you would pretty much be able to wear colored clothes in the game. It would be helpful for SMP. I think we would all love to wear colored clothes without changing our skins.
So, yes, it would be pointless. But dyeing wool is also pointless if you look at it like that.

That could be a fairly easy to code mod.. you simply copy the code from the base leather armor, rename, create new "skin" for it and repeat! Thanks for the idea! ^~^

Trust me, I'm a Doctor.

You realize suggesting a mod in the suggestion section is against the rules...

One problem I just realized, it would be hard to fit all the types of armor in the creative mode menu.

...

You can't even wear armor in Creative. XD
I am meowing at my lung’s fullest. I would even argue that the echo that reverberates back to me is the voice of someone I know…

You can just as easily dye it yourself if you can switch. It would only take up an extra second or so to grab the dye from creative, and craft it.

This suggestion doesn't really make any sense. The color and design of the leather armor depends on the texture-pack you're using. Not the game.

If it was hard coded into the game, there would have to be a color overlay. Then, everything would look like crap.

Unless the dyed armor had different textures of course.

It would be similar to wool, using different damage values for different textures that use different crafting recipes, but act the same.

It would create another kind of armor not an overlay, silly.

Wouldn't it break if a zombie so much as looked at you funny though?

And you can't use damage values to save on item IDs, because damage values are used by armor to track how close it is to disintegrating.
If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

It would act the exact same, just a different color. How is it this hard to understand?
