I have successfully set up a SMP server that I and my friend can both connect to. However, I cannot use any of the Op/Admin capabilities. After scouring the internet and this forum I found many solutions that worked for other people, yet for some reason do not for me. All I want to do is set a different spawn point for players on the server. A list of things I've tried...
-Putting my username in the op.txt file
-Creating an admins.txt file and placing my username in it
-Use "op " command in the server window (this actually gave me a message in-game notifying me of becoming an Op, yet every command I used was still "unknown")

I'm at a loss here, as there are many confusing options that work for some people and don't for others.
IE some people having just an op.txt file with their name in it solves their problem, and some people need both admins.txt as well as op.txt with their name in both.

Make an Admin group in the Groups.txt file, and make yourself Admin in the Users.txt file.

I have no groups.txt or users.txt files.

Should I make them and just put my name in them?

Yup. Get hey0's mod if you haven't already.

I got the mod and am trying to use the example groups, and I have put my name in the users.txt but still have no luck.

-groups.txt

#Add your groups here (When adding your entry DO NOT include #!)
#The format is:
#NAME:COLOR:COMMANDS:INHERITEDGROUPS:ADMIN/UNRESTRICTED
#For administrative powers set admin/unrestricted to 2.
#For no restrictions and ability to give out items set it to 1.
#If you don't want the group to be able to build set it to -1.
#Inherited groups and admin/unrestricted are optional.
#Examples:
admins:c:*:mods:2
mods:b:/ban,/kick,/item,/tp,/tphere,/s,/i,/give:vip:1
vip:a::default
default:f:/help,/sethome,/home,/spawn,/me,/msg,/kit,/playerlist,/warp,/motd,/compass,/tell,/m,/who:default

-users.txt

#Add your users here (When adding your entry DO NOT include #!)
#The format is:
#NAME:GROUPS:ADMIN/UNRESTRICTED:COLOR:COMMANDS:IPs
#For administrative powers set admin/unrestricted to 2.
#For no restrictions and ability to give out items set it to 1.
#If you don't want the person to be able to build set it to -1.
#Admin/unrestricted, color and commands are optional.
#Examples:
#Adminfoo:admins
#Moderator39:mods:1:0:/unban
#BobTheBuilder:vip:0:d
vessix:admins

If I'm literally copying from the examples (as I would have no clue what to do otherwise), how is this wrong?

What commands are you trying to use exactly? And I assume in-game you are using like /give or /item instead of just "item" or "give".

I have a similar question: I just want to know how to read the text file information...

After each group name, there's a letter (c for admins, b for mods etc.) that I thought corresponded to the color of their name.  But what color does the letter refer to? And what about the star under the admin group?

Can someone explain how I create a group and list the commands that I want them to have?

I've tried googlin' this stuff and I just can't seem to find the right language or whatever this stuff is, so I'm having a hard time editing any permissions for my friends on the server.  Any help is appreciated.
