Hamachi is the best thing if you don't want to buy a server. Just invite your friend in your Hamachi's group and make the server.

All free and you can play with your friend.

But the connection is a piece of trash if the person hosting doesn't have a decent computer.

Or you can just run it by port-forwarding. I honestly hate Hamachi servers. I have never plaved on a Hamachi server, and I never will.  <_<

You should read the global rules sometime.

Hamachi is a virtual network where everyone who haves hamachi can go on that network and do file sharing, play togheter without port forwarding.

okay, i´ll explain it since ive been using it for a long time with success.

Hamachi is a freeware program that creates a virtual network adapter. in laymen terms: it makes your windows believe you have another network adapter coexisting with the one connecting to the internet. its not there, but your computer believes it does.

using a user interface you can create groups and invite other users of hamachi into your group (or join other groups if invited). you have a list you can constantly look up who is connected to you. all persons to whom you have a connection will also display in the windows network folder.

the advantage behind this is as follows: hamachi establishes a connection to all online group members using the existing internet connection. using that connection hamachi fakes that the corresponding computer is in the same network as you, as if you were directly connected by a LAN cable and not a ton of glass fiber and such. in the internet you use ports to connect, but many ports are usually blocked by the router, notably those often used for server hosting. in a network you dont have such ports, but rather a direct connection. because hamachi imitates a LAN connection it is like a workaround against blocked ports thus making server hosting possible for anyone and at the same time restricting the people having access to it to those that are in the same hamachi group.

how it works: actually hamachi creates a connection using the internet and use that ability to make connections INSIDE that connection.
imagine it like this: you have a pipe network going through your town. its a water pipe, but you want to send oil through, obviously you cant do that. so you go and build a pipe inside the existing pipe only to your friend whos waiting for the oil. now you can send oil through the inner pipe without leaking oil into the outer water pipe. the metaphor isnt entirely correct, but its the ebst i can think of.

also you can turn hamachi off anytime. also there is a rare issue causing the tunnel not to be direct but relayed, giving a different color and a text telling you that there is only a relay tunnel. this is likely due to already used ports the hamachi connection cant use. relay tunnels cause significant performance drops often causing pings up to 4 digits and probably bein unable to connect via hamichi to that pc. luckily this only affects single computers in your list and is likely to be repaired by econnecting.

This hamachi thing sounds like a good deal if people are too cheap to buy a server. :>

So I could set up a server for free! :) does it make a difference if the computer is rubbish and our connaction is rubbish, if I asked my brother to set one up from where he lives (Scotland) and I could connect to it from where I live (North Wales)! (his connection works well) :) Is it the same with Terraria?

If your connection really is rubbish then you will get a high ping and significant lag, it isn't magic.

It works the same with any multi-player game that allows you to run a LAN server for the game in your home, a lot of the Youtubers doing co-op Lets Play videos are connecting to each other using Hamachi for the game and skype for the commentary since they don't actually live anywhere near each other.

Rubbish connection + rubbish connection = rubbish server

You need decent internet to run a server, but the computer it's running off of doesn't have to be great by any means.
