*Okay, hit me if Im wrong, but I think this hasn't been suggested*

Minecraft needs map. It will be nearly impossible to locate yourself and your base in infinite maps, unless we have a map.

I'v been thinking that once you enter an place that you have never been, your map/log/book will get updated.

What you think?

I cannot recall the exact poster, but this was suggested in great detail by someone a few weeks back. If someone could find that thread it'd be a delight.

But yes, it is needed greatly, as I lose myself unless I place stone totems every couple of chunks.

No, No, No, No, No.

I tend to agree, I don't really like the idea of maps. Your avatar is not a cartographer and does not have some miraculous ability to see the terrain from overhead. I just don't see what maps could add to the game.

I have also suggested that we are not able to build a block underneath when we jump.
Makes a griefer or trespassers job much harder, and it's appropriately more realistic.

Oh, fine. On that point you have me beat. I still don't like the idea of maps.

what if we got a UAV for every 5 kills? It would be equiped with a thermal imaging camera so we could  find underground bases and see your surrounding area. lol

no, but I think its fair to have a 64x64 mini map in a corner. Maybe like LoZ wind waker with the map fish. Instead a new animal mob, maybe some kind of bird is placed in every chunk which you can kill  and it will drop a map segment.

I don't know, making at least basic maps seems like a pretty useful thing to do if you're out there mining. I don't think gps device style maps are appropriate (unless this is MODERN minecraft, which it isn't, from the looks of things) but something you can pull up like an inventory, showing the areas you have walked around (during the day) even without a player location, that seems appropriate, and interesting.

What it could bring to the game is a drive to explore more thoroughly... If you see a blank spot in your map, you'll be inclined to go investigate it.  It would also give a sense of accomplishment, at least for me, when my map starts looking more complete.

I would prefer a telescope/spyglass/binoculars over maps any day. I respawned in infdev once and was miles away from my town, it was fun trying to find it but it would have been better if i had a telescope.

A spyglass for infdev maps and a topographic map (with whole map shown) for indev maps.

I think that just respawing a reasonable distance from your corpse would be better. That way you're near where you died, but the person that killed you can't kill you again.

But I still think we should have some sort of map system. It would be nice.

I'll retract my previous statement. There are plenty of ways to find your way around. A map that instantly reveals the surrounding area would make it difficult to hide things.

If we do have maps, they should be something you make yourself. It would really add a lot of depth to the game and you could map out your sprawling underground dungeon/fortress for people. Also, having some way of copying the map would be good too.

But when multiplayer comes around with multiple color blocks, I'm going to make a "war map", a large room where the floor has a rough map of the area.

I wish Notch would create some sort of in game block editing system. It could do wonders for the game.

If maps are made by yourself this would also be a good way to share information with other people by showing or giving them a map you made. Of course, when multilayer rolls around of course.

I died in infdev and searched for my base for hours, finally found it, would love to have  a map though, i may just break out an old fashion piece of paper soon...
