[Thistle]

Hello everyone!  This was originally the 64x64 version of Thistle Pack, but it has since evolved to take on a life of its own.  Wolfhound is a highly detailed pack with entirely hand-colored textures - there is not a single photograph or copy and paste image in this pack.  Everything is my own work.  Give it a download and watch your game be transformed.

Why the name Wolfhound?

This is Thistle.  She sits at my feet while I play Minecraft.  She has a lot in common with the Minecraft wolves, specifically: intelligence.  The cats beat her up and steal her bed.



Since I named my first pack after a dog, I decided to name my second after a dog as well - a much, much larger breed.

What's the point of Wolfhound?  I'm a fan of highly ornate things and miniscule details.  Unable to find a pack that exactly fit what I wanted I decided to try my hand at making my own.  My ultimate goal is to have a customizer with lots of options from the traditional feel of Minecraft to decorative blocks that bring color to your game.

This texture pack supports some of the additional features found in a patched game.  Right now, I support RandomMobs.  You can find the patcher here.  This is not required for your game to look right and is purely optional.

Customizer Work-arounds

Tluthal has put together a handy explanation for some of the things you can do with Wolfhound to get around the customizer issues.

First off, download the NON-CUSTOMIZER folder Thistle has set up. This is very important, and it'll work even if the customizer is down, which is very helpful. If you want to, you can also download from the CUSTOMIZER to make editing things a little easier. This assumes you're using the pack from the CUSTOMIZER, but I'm sure you can figure out how to do it without the customizer.

Make a new folder [FOLDER X] somewhere on your computer. Unzip both packs into their own folders within FOLDER X. I'd recommend re-naming them so that you can tell which is which. Now, copy the files from the CUSTOMIZER folder into FOLDER X.

Ore texture problems: These are usually errors caused by the customizer!

Open up Photoshop/GIMP, whatever image editing program you like so long as it has LAYERS and saves TRANSPARENCY. Open up the terrain.png in FOLDER X in said program.

Grab your stone texture from the png and make a new layer, UNDER the base layer. If it's not under, you won't be able to see your ores! Paste the texture to this under-layer, and position it behind each of the ores so that you don't screw up your tiling. Bam!

Changing out or fixing textures: The customizer sometimes has texture errors where part of a texture is missing, but this can also be used if you don't want to be bothered with the customizer, but do want to use a flavor pack.

Open up Photoshop/GIMP, whatever image editing program you like so long as it has LAYERS and saves TRANSPARENCY. Open up the terrain.png in FOLDER X in said program.

Remember that NON-CUSTOMIZER folder? Go open it up outside your image editor. Dig around for the alternates folder [it's easy to find], and go through them until you find the texture you're looking for. THEY ARE NOT LABELED, BUT NUMBERED. So remember this number.

Back to your image editing software, you're going to open up that file you found before. Now just copy and paste it into the correct position. Save your terrain.png!

Randomobs and such: This is geared towards those using the customizer, but who want the multiple mob skins.

This is the other reason to download the non-customizer version! Open up your mobs folder in FOLDER X and the NON-CUSTOMIZER folder. Copy the mobs from the NON-CUSTOMIZER over to FOLDER X. I'd also recommend doing this with the GUI since certain textures aren't available from the customizer yet! There may be other areas where this is relevant but I can't remember off the top of my head.

Once you're satisfied, zip everything except the ZIP files and the CUSTOMIZER and NON-CUSTOMIZER folders together. Copy your new zip over to your texture pack folder, and ta-da!

I realize this looks like a lot of work and very complicated, but it's actually pretty easy. It's made my life a lot easier since both of the texture packs I use and love have a lot of options that I like to take advantage of, and having this already in place has saved me a huge lot of hassle - and now that Thistle has the options in the direct download, I don't have to worry about the customizer going down.

Other Packs to Look At

There's a handful of packs that I really like for various reasons and think you should check them out too.  Because if you are anything like me, you'll have about 50+ texture packs downloaded.

This is the pack that inspired me to try creating a 64x64 pack.  It is also terrifying.  Nuff' said.

And this is the pack that inspired me to try making my own textures.


This is a neat pack that's got a really cool style throughout it.  The colors are bright and cheerful too.

It's very simple and very cool.  Goes to show that you don't have to have mad detail to make a terrific pack.

I am so excited about this pack.  If I ever take over the world, I want this guy and the guy that does Isolation to be my interior decorators for my Fortress of Destruction.

I'm sure you notice that my tastes go from highly ornate to highly pixelated.  This is one of the pixel art packs.  I do so highly admire pixel art and this one is just very nicely done.


This is a simple but pleasant pack.  I especially like the trees, and highly recommend checking it out.

THIS IS BRILLACE! I and many others at the TAU have been waiting for this, and it is amazing thistle. Great job, it was defintly worth the work put in. If you haven't already, you should link to here on the 32x version.

Thanks! I'm really excited about it being ready for download too. I've had a lot of fun using it while it's been in progress. It seems to be faring better than Thistle Pack on planetminecraft too.

Its unfortunate that because these textures has such high detail, stone brick and cobblestone can clash very well if put next to eachother. Love it though!

Did I hear the word 'decorative' mentioned? That sounds good to me...as does 'Wolfhound' (my favourite dog).

It's an excellent pack and all your efforts are to be commended, as it looks beautiful...bearing in mind the lower res stuff of course. I also like the fact that it's leaning to the darker tones rather than the overly bright. Well done indeed.        

Now pace yourself and don't burn out trying to meet demand...just make sure you continue to enjoy the work for yourself.

Wow, thank you Glimmar!  That's pretty awesome to hear.

I'll certainly pace myself.  If any more new textures get done this week it'll be because I get sick of looking at them in my own game.

No new textures today, I spent the evening writing.  I'll probably not have anything new this week as I'll be packing to go to a conference tomorrow and then I'll be gone until Saturday night.  Anyway, I'm off to bed.
