It takes a while for the stem to mature, but after you get your first one, they grow quicker. You do need water within four blocks, and the dirt around the stem needs to be hoed.

You need another farm space beside it to grow. Also you need water

I think the way pumpkins grow is stupid. They should grow like trees instead of having that stalk.

Or maybe a stalk should grow continuously outwards and make eventually growing mini pumpkins appear.

Another thing to note is that, in a sense, all things grow twice as fast when torches are placed around them. This is because the light from touches acts as a light supply when it turns night time, and growing does not progress at night because there is no potent light source. Just thought this is good to know, since it will help them grow faster.

Um, pumpkins in Minecraft grow the exact same way they do in real life. So you must think real life pumpkins are stupid as well....
Lucifer - "So you're willing to die for a pile of cockroaches? Why?"
Gabriel - "Because dad was right. They are better than us."
Lucifer - "They are broken, flawed, abortions!"
Gabriel - "Damn right they're flawed, but a lot of them try to do better."

1. The stem takes awhile to grow (wouldn't be surprised if it was 2 hours).
2. The more squares around the stem that are available for pumpkins to grow (up to 4), the faster the pumpkin will grow.
3. You need an air block above the block that the pumpkin would occupy if it grew there.
4. You need water (this one should be obvious) 4 blocks away from the pumpkin at most (diagonals count as 1 block, not 2).

Try using bonemeal on the stem. That will make it mature instantly, and then pumpkins should pop up around it if there's farmland around it.
If it's tainted, blow it up. If taint persists, blow it up again.

Melons and Pumpkins grow faster in sunlight, instead of light from torches and glowstone and stuff.
