My friend made a server this morning, he can connect to it, but I can't? I put the right IP in, he's tried whitelisting it so only me and him can get on, but nothing works, it just says 'can't reach server'.

By default a network got all "ports" closed meaning that nothing can get into the network, to solve this your'e friend have to port-forward his or her router for minecraft:Send this to you'r friend
Or he/she have to set up a hamachi-network and everyone who wants to play on the server have to download it and connect to the hamachi network before using his hamachi-IP to connect to the server: youtube tutorial to do it   ;)
I <3 Mechanical Keyboard (Tesoro Durandal G1NL)
Just have to love it when someone changes the specs when comparing with and without optifine..

Do you use the external ip, or his internal? Because anyone who plays through the same connection as the server uses the IP 192.168.1.*, but external players use the ip which http://www.whatismyip.com/ gives. So that means you have to use that one.
Cry a river. Punch a tree. Craft and build a wooden bridge over the river. Use your bridge to get over it.

yer, are you using what is saying?

the 192.168.x.x is within your home network
if other people want to access the server within the network, it most go through your router, so you need the ip of your router (follow the link from the guy above me)

Are you also entering the port properly when you enter the IP?

If you're unsure, Minecraft uses 25565 as the default port. MySQL uses the same port so often this is already unblocked on most routers, and those that support UPnP.

Server.properties is created in the same folder as Minecraft_Server.exe. Ask the host to look for this line;
server-port=25565
Where 25565, in this case, is the default port number.

So when you enter the IP the correct format should be:
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:25565

Entering the IP of your router will only connect you to your default gateway, and in most cases, the configuration page for your router.
If you're referring to your Internet IP address, that is obtained through your ISP.

I know that 192.168.x.x is a private  class C ip-address..

don't act like you know it all.. I just don't know the correct ways of saying it because i never speak english besides on the internet

Wow, no need for hasty remarks and taking things the wrong way. This is a support forum after all, and clarifying terms can solve a lot of confusion in the long run.

Also I never stated the IP of 192.168.1.1, i never stated an IP at all.
You mentioned router IP, which in my post, explained why this was wrong if you are after your internet IP address. Thus allowing people to connect to you via the internet.
I may not know everything, but I knew enough to correct you.

you should've read what i said..
i said  that he should follow the link which would give him the correct ip-adress which he needed

and the 'router address' that will lead you to the router page = 192.168.1.1 if you are a class C user like pretty much everyone (normal customers)

hi, i think i'm having a similar issue as the OP.  i just got a new computer, and i was able to connect to my friend's server with my old computer, but now i can't connect with this new comp.

he says there's something jacked up with my new computer, i turned off firewall and it still won't work.  i don't understand all this port and hamachi jargon, ip address finder and such.  he says he's "port forwarded" and everything, we don't know what's going on.  i hate playing solo world cause we got so much going on in our multiplayer world.  any help? :(
